I toured the Buffalo Trace Distillery, and as part of the tour I asked about the difference between Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace bourbon. The guide said the main difference is barrel location in the rackhouse. The eagle rare barrels are stored at the bottom in more "cellar" like conditions and the Bourbon Trace barrels mid to top with larger temperature fluctuations. The larger temperature fluctuations result in the whiskey pulling more flavors from the barrel.

@jmullentech 4 года назад
Ha, holy shit that's awesome. Thanks for that tidbit!
@thirdbaseman124
@thirdbaseman124 4 года назад
They always store the younger whiskey's higher up since they age quicker from the temperature fluctuations and the oldest ones (like Pappy) are on the bottom. It's not necessarily that they pull "more" flavor if they are higher up, but it happens more rapidly. You also get different flavors, check out Elmer Lee's old interview on RU-vid.

I love to deep richness the darker hollers bring to Eagle rare.
@dezert1500
@dezert1500 3 года назад
Spot on with the stacking differences of each. Higher stacking and temperature fluctuations increases evaporation. Scotch Whisky is only a max of 3 barrels high and obviously with much lower temperature fluctuations in Scotland. I prefer Buffalo Trace. More of a tall rounded profile. Eagle Rare is a ramp up and down finish in a different direction. It doesn't balance well. A good scotch is flatter with more complexity and a sublime finish.

Do you find it ironic that directly across the distillery on the other side of the river is the Frankfort Waste Water Treatment Plant? 😜 I’m not saying they use waste water I just find it mildly ironic. So while the smell you get on one side of the river may be pleasing the other side....uhh not so much. 😇 it’s all about perspective. Hahahahaha

Recently bought Eagle rare 2 weeks ago for the first time in 2 years. Poured a little bit from a 2 year bottle with a quarter left, taste tested it. Then opened and tried the new bottle of eagle rare and was relieved to see that the flavor is still wonderfully the same, :) Thank you Buffalo Trace for keeping the flavor the same and not ruining anything, Cheers!

Buffalo Trace is one I REALLY wanted to be in my four recommended bourbons due to my own whiskey journey over the past three years. I did make my own review video on it when I first sampled it from my own bottle a month ago. I had it for the first time in December of 2017 on my own channel and it was literally the second whiskey I ever filmed myself tasting. It's a wonderful introduction for someone who has never really partaking in straight spirits, I know back then I still had to get used to the alcohol smell. I also need to buy a new bottle... it um... went quick since it was a smaller bottle, just like my Wild Turkey 101 always does at my bar. It will always be a must bourbon to my own private tastings. I host them for friends, family and associates for now. I've even been mulling over a checklist for them to mark off before the tasting so I know what other bottles they might prefer. Does the Wizard Academy have such a checklist for trying to narrow down a persons taste profile? The quick method I use is that I always ask how they take their morning coffee. And if they don't drink that, I can just gauge what their most common beverage of choice seems to be, and go from there. ;)

This is a barrel pick of Buffalo Trace not just the regular offering. That makes this a single barrel, which varies a lot but I have been WILDLY impressed with these when I can find them.

I am just the opposite! I love the eagle rare and don’t care for the buffalo trace. A cheaper bottle that I found I love is Evan Williams 1783. Bought a fifth for $14.99 and it’s a 10 year old bourbon.

Seriously, Evan 1783 is The best cheap bourbon I've ever found . I've always been amazed I don't see it recommended much. But I'm fine with it remaining cheap and under the radar...

That’s odd because Eagle rare and buffalo trace are the exact same thing, the only difference is eagle rare is stored 25’ higher.

My two favorites!❤️ I never would have guessed they were the same mash bill. Eagle Rare has always been my very favorite. Until a couple of years ago, I could always get it for $28. That was perfection at a great price in my humble opinion!

I've started to watch these videos when I happen to have the same whiskey at home and taste it along with you to practice and see how much similarity I get with what you get. I've come to see that it's quite common to taste the same major notes but some of the supporting notes I'll get different things. I seem to get amaretto a lot of times when you guys get something like icing or vanilla. I wonder how much memories and other intangible factors affect an individual's palate compared to physical taste bud differences.

I much prefer Eagle Rare to Buffalo Trace. Buffalo Trace is only 40% here in the UK though. Thank God they still bottle Eagle Rare at 45% for the UK market

I just got my hands on some at the Duty Free between New York and Canada. They only carry it in very limited quantities in Ohio because we are a controlled state with buyers who apparently have no conception of what is in demand.

Buffalo trace is my current go to bourbon. You can't buy any bourbon in Australia for under forty AU anymore so paying a little bit extra for Buffalo trace is well worth it. 😎👍

Episode 239 was Eagle Rare with both of you and was the featured whiskey. I only know this because I found a random bottle last night that the owner had just put on the shelf along with the super cheap stuff, as a unicorn. This is in CO Springs, CO. Was a sweet find, so had to watch the reviews today! Cheers you MBs!

My local Goody Goody pulled my name out of the hat to pick from a list of Buffalo Trace products. I got a comically huge 1.75L bottle of Eagle Rare for $60! First bourbon I've ever bought, I usually stick to Scottish malts, but I think I'll have to explore the category some more.

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but the eagle rare is same mash bill aged ten years on the middle shelves of the warehouse which is why there is a different flavor profile.
