I never liked the term filler for describing episodes. This didn't advance any overall plot much, but character development took steps forward.

I'm totally with you on that. To me, a filler is an episode (or arc of episodes) made when adapting a work in progress, to let it some time to go on. The term has a pejorative connotation cause most of the time, those episodes mess with the plans of the author and introduce inconsistencies (though it's totally possible to have good, or even excellent filler episodes). Buffy being an original creation, there is, by definition, no filler episode in it.

@@67Daidalos I agree it has a pejorative connotation and I do not like the term either. It seems to be used by people who think the overall arc is the reason for the show. I love episodes of TV shows where the overall arc is not a main part as many times I do not like the arc (not necessarily with Buffy but other shows).

The guy who plays richard his name is Greg Vaughn he was also in one season of the original charmed series and he plays eric Brady on days of our lives the same role that Jensen ackles played many years ago

Something to remember is that at the time, very few TV shows had season-long story arcs. (Other than daytime soaps.) One-off episodes were the norm. Buffy was the first show I’d seen that used a long story arc. It was a bit of a shock to be honest.

this episode is all about ritual sacrifice for the sake of gaining demons favour (which comes up several times so get used to it) a single person or a group/ cult can sacrifice people to a demon and in return they gain good fortune...this can include wealth, unnatural good luck, power, prestige...and more. The college boys and their fathers before them had been doing it for years (as was mentioned at the end of the episode when it said the pit had loads of bones from past sacrifices and several companies were now losing money due to the demon's death).

My teenage brain thought it was so chill that cordy and buffy were seeing older men but my older adult brain is so skeeved out by it. Like what reasonable, non predatory grown man is on the prowl for 16 year olds? Yikes.

Frat parties on TV shows and films are always exaggerated so I would not take them to be an accurate reflection.

A filler on an episode to be honest. Cordelia kinda steals the show here, but the metaphor being when young and innocent be wary of older more experienced people. Giles recognises he has to ease Buffy into her role instead of pushing her. Much better episodes to come in this Season after the brilliant School Hard this episode was a let down. But don't worry there are three absolutely 'Stellar' episodes to come in S2.
