Wow surprised some people don't like this episode. Im in tears everytime I watch it its hilarious! 😂😂 Yeah the spell takes away choice, but the episode never said that's okay. The spell only effected females, regarless of sexual preference. Plus Willow has been sexually attracted to men before, so that adds even more reason as to why the spell could have effected her. But I think it's largely accepted that the jacket just effects females regardless of their sexual preference. That's what made it hilarious for me. "His physical presence has a PENIS!" 🤣🤣😅
@matth1589
@matth1589 5 лет назад
It is also to show that the spell is not just emphasising his attractiveness or loosening women's inhibitions, it is a compulsion. The attraction is entirely artificial, bypassing the victim's ability to process it logically or emotionally.

I hated this episode when it aired and I haven't gotten any fonder of it. It's essentially a retelling of "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" only not half so clever. At this point the cracks were already starting to show in this season...but I'll leave it there for now.

In terms of the episode featuring consent. It's a show about vampires. Most of the victims aren't consenting to having their lives taken. The show has always played love spells more comically, but it never condones them and always points out how dangerous they are. RJ isn't portrayed as a villain because I don't think he actually knows what's going on. He just thinks he's amazing.

Season 7 doesn't stop with the callbacks. I'm old, so I still find this episode hilarious. Is no one going to mention that Buffy was going to use a rocket launcher? That thing was probably sitting in her closet since Season 2x14. Xander/Spike...oh those 2 hasn't had fun together since what? Season 4? That old comedic style sequence of Woods oblivious to Spike vs Buffy in the background, still makes me chuckle. A great homage to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered".

I'm always confused by how Willow's sexuality is portrayed. She had a crush on Xander for years, she had a little crush on Giles, she fell in love with Oz. And then she fell in love with Tara. She is bisexual. The whole, you can either be straight or gay, so she was straight and turned gay, maybe that's the times... but bi was still known back then, it's erasure and I don't particularly like it.
@lucasrodrigues9880
@lucasrodrigues9880 5 лет назад
For me she's bi, but show that she prefer to be with women. She also have some comments about other male characters even after she started dating Tara (Dracula for example). I think when she says gay now is about what she prefers, i mean most of the times this happened was when she was with Tara, so i think she doesnt talk about her preference for men in respect for her, Joss Whedon also said she is bi, but he used the "gay now" to not confuse the audience that have alot of people already talking saying the Willow fall in love with another woman doesnt makes sense. Also she said in New Moon Rising that she will always have a place for Oz in her heart, meaning she will not stop loving him, and Oz also talks about how he will "always be here" when Xander asks why he still hangin around on Willow's dream in "Restless". So i think is like a mix of the time the show aired with worry about the audience understanding of how sexuality works. For me the proof that Willow is bi is with Vampire Willow and Angel mentioning how a vampire doesnt change its personality because it turned into a demon. Sorry for bad spelling.
@thomasknash
@thomasknash 5 лет назад
I always saw her as Bi (actually maybe even pansexual, considering she'd love RJ if he became a woman), but I think her sexual identity is very much shaped by the era the show came out. I remember in the late 90s/early 00s that for a lot of people sexuality was binary - you were either straight or gay. Bi was a "copout". Now I'm not part of the LGBTQ community, but I have friends who were, especially lesbians, telling me how many of them looked down upon women who identified as bi. Back then, according to my friends, you were often forced to identify as just gay, even denying you were attracted to both. (Others probably know way more about this, but I think a big reason for this was that lesbians were reacting to the lesbian & bi chic that was going on in pop culture)
@Carabas72
@Carabas72 5 лет назад
The way I remember it, Willow was supposed to be bi, but the network was really scared of that word.
@cissyiniguez
@cissyiniguez 5 лет назад
@@thomasknash That problem still goes on. As a bisexual woman, I prefer hanging out with my straight friends because they have a more "whatever" attitude about who I may be seeing. They don't discourage or judge. My gay male friends don't really give give me a bad time either (unless there's a cute male around lol). It's my lesbian friends that are the vicious ones, telling me to "make up your mind" and "just accept that you're a lesbian" and can be quite terse in the way they speak to me so I tend to hang out with them seldomly.

I mean, bear in mind, RJ never knew the jacket was what was making all these girls suddenly attracted to him, but I have noticed the buffyverse fandom has had debates about love spells in the show in the past. The show has always shown that they never condone love spells, usually showing us that they can go horribly wrong (see bewitched, bothered & bewildered, and this episode where it turned everyone against each other and almost caused Dawn to commit suicide). However, I do see your point, ofc. It's a touchy subject. but in terms of this episode, I like it. Not my favourite, but it has some iconic moments in it (the xander/spike team up, the split screen segment, anya robbing a bank, buffy attempting to kill principal woods with the flamethrower from season 2 and that whole scene.) I do love the episodes where they put aside the angst and dark tone of the season and just as a call back to the earlier seasons. to be honest, as a whole, it probably wouldn't rank anywhere in a top 10 buffy episodes list. but it's enjoyable if you put aside Dawn's irritating teen angst and the whole consent thing.

What I find interesting is that Buffy hitting on RJ looks weird, as if she's some kind of cougar. But in "Reptile Boy" (season 2), Buffy was a junior and the senior college student Tom Warner flirted with her and it never seemed weird or gross. Here in season 7, Buffy would be a senior college student if she didn't drop her studies, and RJ is a junior in high school.

I enjoy this episode. It's silly and over the top and stupid which is what it's meant to be. As far as the consent issue, yeah that's a problem but the episode never presents the love spell as a good thing or in a positive light. Willow almost turning RJ into a woman is presented as a bad thing and clearly wrong. My biggest issue is that Xander tried to put the coat on. It feels almost out of character for Xander to do that at this point, especially after the events of Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered which was mentioned in this episode.

With the amount of over analysing of consent in this episode you are going to have a major flipout when you get onto the Dollhouse series. When you do reach the series you are going to have to put this to the back of your mind and let the story develop. The lack of consent in this episode from RJ wasn't a lack of consent like someone forcing themselves on someone else, he thought women really liked him and the jacket enhanced that (or just gave him charm like powers) which made women he liked really like him back. After that the spell did the rest.

@@samanthasalmon1682 I think she talked about doing Dollhouse when she did the video about her upcoming schedule. It was a brilliant series that was ahead of it's time but consent and control was a major theme throughout.
@RitsychServare
@RitsychServare 5 лет назад
true... I though RJ used a spell to make women liked him but then that wouldn't add up 'cause he probably always knows he's hot and wouldn't need to make much of an effort. I think this episode is kind of alluding to popular high school jocks that girls easily crush on but instead of the attraction being due to their good looks, it all has to do with their jackets--and it's a clever use for a charm spell. Symbolically, the jacket represents a certain status or position in real life and the one wearing it might think it makes them look more attractive.

It sucks that this is the last season of the series. Let me just soak this in before I say goodbye once more. Good times. - Yvette

I don’t think this is a great episode or anything but it contains one of my favorite sign gags in all of Buffy. That scene from principal woods office with Buffy in the background lining up the rocket launcher and spike tackling her. It cracks me up every time.

I would not have known the music was the theme from 'A Summer Place' if I hadn't has the subtitles on, but it's a nice call back to when we first met Oz. 'What does a girl have to do to impress you?/It involves a feather boa and the theme from 'A Summer Place, I can't discuss it here.' I'm a long way too old for her, but Dawn does look good in the club! 10:43 I've heard that they actor who plays RJ is actually older than SMG.

This episode made me so uncomfortable, especially Buffy trying to bang a student while under a love spell, and that stuff being played primarily for laughs. That said, three awesome things about this episode:1. The return of the rocket launcher.2. Buffy overcoming the love spell to save Dawn. Love spells have been shown to be incredibly powerful magic- I believe this is the only time that a character ever successfully shakes one off on their own, which really says a lot about how much Buffy loves her sister.3. "I'll work around it." That line is one of my guilty pleasures in life.

Always personally thought there was a deeper relationship between Buffy and Dawn that allows her to do that, like in Th Gift where Buffy says Dawn is more than a sister to her and their relationship is physical.

That's the same rocket launcher that Buffy used on the Judge in the Season 2 episode 'Innocence'. Interesting bit of trivia: the M136 AT4 (the official designation of the weapon) is a single-shot weapon that can not be reloaded. So actually Principle Wood was in no real danger from Buffy.

To answer your question as to why it only works on girls is because the guy who made it was clearly a straight man who didn't care what woman he attracted why would he make it attract men to. When it comes to love spells sexual orientation doesn't matter it's about obsession

Willow fell for the guy but she remained gay. That's why she needed a fix his whole having a penis thing. It seems the spell doesn't consider the targets attraction at all that's why it targeted willow,so no I don't think it would work on a gay man. The spell is designed to only target women,or it might target the opposite gender of whoever wears it,or it could be anyone the wearer views as attractive.

I think it’s a cute episode and the fact that RJ doesn’t seem to know his jacket is magic helps to keep it light. It’s a lighthearted episode in a dark season. I also like that buffys love for her sister seems to trump the love spell of the jacket and that is very beautiful.

what's with all this talk about consent? Don't you realise that the moment you crush on someone, that person has unintentionally hijacked your hormones to the point that you can't even think straight or act naturally in front of him (or her)? Rude much! I mean, I didn't ask to feel like an evolving maniac or something. Or what about falling in love? that person "stole your heart"? now that's just theft! report it to the police immediately and wait for their 'usual' response. Let's see if that person ought to be charged for a "crime." #ohyoutoo?

What I don't like about this episode is that it reminds me of how people wouldn't consider any of this seriously back then and how uptight people are today. I think a lot of this bring up the fact that romantic love is lost in today's society and this episode pokes fun of it in the most ridiculous way but people today don't understand what it means to have humility in the silliness of true romance. People are just too fickle today and don't know what unconditional love really is.

I would point out like other people might already have that Rj had no idea about any spell so when he made out with Buffy both just thought they wanted to so in that case it was totally consensual and in no way as wrong as some people try to over think it.

The spell wasn't placed by RJ or his brother. They were just dumb enough to think they were cool. The way the spell worked was if a girl saw the guy wearing the jacket it affected them. Willow being gay or not has nothing to do with her being under the spell's effects. "We're not responsible with anything we did morally or, you know...legally." I disagree with the overallness of that statement. I traded back and forth comments with someone about this and that person's comments were along the lines of since its a fantasy show then legally human laws don't matter. The problem with that is there have been moments in the series where legal issues are the antagonism. So while they were under spells in this episode, the things they were doing couldn't have been explained away had they gotten caught. PS If Anya didn't return the money once the spell was over then she is responsible.

Unsure I understand regarding the "Does not hold up well today" comment. I mean, I know what it means, I just didn't see what you were referring to. I could totally see that on an episode today- And then I was also confused by a comment you made afterwards regarding your opinion being controversial or potentially starting arguments. About Willow and you not buying the way the spell affected her. I don't understand why that would be a hot point of contention. It's funny, I skipped some of the most recent past reactions but watched this one because I thought you were going to be laughing and loving it. Oh well, you never know.

*Hey! 🥰 I actually always really enjoyed this episode and kind of just took it for what it was. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Since a spell is involved and it’s Sunnydale, it’s gonna be pretty rando, lol. It’s funny because I actually had a huge crush on the actor that plays RJ when I was 15, Thad Luckinbill, he played on an American soap opera called Young & The Restless for a long time, possibly still does. The one thing that bothered me was something super small, which was when Dawn tells Buffy she will buy her a new cheerleading uniform...what, from 1997? 🤣🤣 Buffy shrugs it off, there should’ve been a quip, imo. I hope everyone is having a great day and as usual, Shannan, loved the reaction and can’t wait for more!* 🥰

Love spells are selfish. They only incorporate the sexuality of the person *using* the spell - hence why this one only affected women and why Xander's spell in Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered did the same. I will also say, however, that Willow's sexuality is probably more broad than 'gay' but that's just how she refers to it.

You know, people critical of this episode should be aware of how f'd sexual politics is in high school. Because it is, and the idea of all this stuff--a slightly older woman seducing a high school age boy because of all her high school baggage; young teens driven suicidal over unrequited love; gay or any other person wishing their crush could be magically made to reciprocate their feelings? That, and worse, happens to high schoolers every day. There's nothing PC about it.

I think at least in part we're supposed to notice RJ's name is a play on the usual abbreviation for the play Romeo and Juliet, the ultimate play about obsessive teenage love. It doesn't make sense, which is why it makes sense (people who look for sense in that play are not going to be satisfied, generally speaking). Hence, lesbian (or bi) Willow suddenly wanting to change RJ's sex is just another symptom of the general weirdness here.

I always found this episode, while funny, felt a bit filler for the season. We started off strong and this, to me, felt like a step backward. But, I got their intention. It was supposed to be a throwback to the first three seasons! "Oh God. I hope she doesn't tell her to get out." Haha. I always hoped for that, too. Dawn wasn't screeching like she used to, which is what made her bearable in the seventh season. Plus, LOVING and LIVING for the throwback clips in the latest reviews!

Didn't like this one OFV and still prefer to skip over Dawn embarrassing herself, but this episode is full of call-backs and foreshadowing and the second half is a lot of fun. One of the main themes is 'perception.' Like Xander's wist-full smile as he remembers all the girls being in love with him while we viewers get a reminder of just how badly that went. Dawn, Buffy, Willow and Anya are each certain that their view of the situation is correct and the others are simply wrong. Then they set out to prove it. I don't care much for all the train stunts but Dawn's choice is especially poignant to me. It isn't hard to imagine, if Buffy had not stopped her from jumping in “The Gift”, that Dawn was hoping to be remembered as the girl who sacrificed herself for everyone else. Being absolutely sure that you are in the right can be a dangerous thing.
