Nice dock and nice video. I especially appreciate a video that is short, well composed, and not purposefully inflated with unnecessary extra 5 minutes. Sending this one to my dad for this weekends project!

This is the best video yet! That's exactly what I'll be doing for a fishing raft. Mine will be 4' X 8' for the same reason... Using dimensional lumber w/ minimal cutting. My deck will be marine plywood w/ outdoor carpeting.

I've been a residential carpenter my entire life and really enjoy it. I mean, I loved my job. Building is so fun to me, and I made a decent living at it. I got very impressed watching a woman frame this floating dock. You rock gal! I cannot frame houses anymore, due to being paralyzed, but I still build a lot of stuff. From decks to birdhouses, to muzzle loaders and muzzle loader accoutrements. Is not building just really fun and rewarding there gal?

Thanks so much for the video! We did this today for our (small, freshwater) pond and it's awesome. Me (handsome athletic stud) and my son (14 skinny disaffected) managed the whole project. We built the frame and dragged half of it into the pond, got the barrels in / under, and started laying decking down. Then pushed the rest into the pond and - with an extra barrel for flotation, got the other barrels in there. I HAVE NO IDEA how anyone could build this on the ground and then push it into the water without an army ... The lumber weighs a ton, but the $10 barrels we found online from a (literal) crackhead work like a champ ... My truck was riding Low-Low on the way home from the lumber store ... crazy. All said and done, once you have the materials, this is actually a 4 (four) hour project. Sooooo cool! We have many more "Pond-Days" in our future - many thanks!

Important to use screws,not nails. As a youngster we built a diving platform. The wave action and stress of use by groups of us would cause nail heads to work their way above the surface. These cause quite a bit of injury to your wet feet, tearing holes in the bottoms. Having no screws back then we just hammered them back down again often and roughed it.

Very nice! I found this video while searching how to build a small pontoon bridge. Same idea, just different dimensions. I almost have to do everything by myself, so have learned a little about moving heavy things. Having a few harbor freight dollies around, or temporarily addding wheels to the item, can be a back saver.

Great pier! It can be used as a raft for a mini dredger to clean the lake from mud. To do this, you need a motor pump for dirty water and a suction nozzle Bagermaster

Nice job on the dock and keeping it simple and easy. One thing I’d suggest based off my dock experience is to rotate the barrels so the bung openings are parallel to the water to avoid any possible filling of them. I also used plumbers tape to seal the bungs. Huh huh yes I said bung. 😂

I have built a dock and a couple rafts with 55 gallon plastic drums. I learned some things, the hard way. You want to seal the drums in the middle of your temperature difference. For MN sealing the drums at 30 degrees works good. The first dock sections I sealed the drums at warmer temperatures and in the winter they caved in some, so I drilled a small hole in one cap above the waterline, but somehow they still can fill with water. So seal in cooler temps. You can't have too much floatation. My first dock / raft had drums has 12sf per barrel, my last has near solid drums at 6.55sf per barrel. There is no such thing as too many drums.

id of left a little gap between your deck boards just so the rain falls threw .and also uness it was womenized wood id of stained it or painted to look good and last thing id of put a bevel on all corners and edges of wood so when climbing on and off it ..no slivers or cuts on edges .no sharp edges . but over all good job .i made one with steel drums and used cable instead of rope and put connectors on inside of drums like you did ..good job .

Wonderful video, thank you. I'd be curious to know how much a 10 x 10 deck like this would weigh? Seems like almost a pontoon boat, but with the barrels spread out as you have them, using this as a boat is kind of problematic because it could be too wobbly. Alas it's best as you have it; a floating dock!

Hi! This video is great, thank you! I am looking to build a tiny dock just to put 2 chairs on to fish off. Could I get away with 4 barrels (2 on each side touching circle parts) or do you think I need a different floatation device? Also would it be compromised if I added rails?
@dcwoodworks

I definitely think thats enough, we have had 8 or more people on this. If you add rails I would just add them on all sides to even out weight

What's the max amount of people you have had on it? Does the weight have to be balanced on it or does it stay fairly level?
@dcwoodworks
@dcwoodworks 4 года назад
We have had 7 people on here and it barely looses height above water, anymore people and it would just not fit us but probably still float. I completely under estimated how many can go on, it's impressive. The only time I found it was unbalanced is if one or two people are on a corner but even then it just tips slightly and might "sink" 6-8 inches so I would say it balances really well.

Thank you so much for an awesome DIY video. You make it look so easy. You’ve given me the inspiration to build a floating dock this weekend at my friend’s cottage following your exact plan except, I’m planning for 3 barrels on either side to a total of 6. I’m a little confused as to why you cut 2 of the joists at 117 inches to arrive at an exact square of 10’ x 10’ since the boards have a 2” thickness. Also, now that you’ve been enjoying your dock for some time, do you recommend any changes to your plan that I should incorporate? 🙏
@dcwoodworks
@dcwoodworks 4 года назад
I am so glad you got inspired! the reason I did that is because the 10 foot boards are 120 inches long and I wanted a perfect square(and not to have to cut the deck boards because the come at 120 inches also) so I had to subtract 3 inches (1.5 for each butt joint x 2) to account for and then when put against the other 120" joists they now are 120 in length (1.5 x 2), does that make sense? also we are finally getting some great weather here in Nova Scotia so I cant complain!
@UdishWijay
@UdishWijay 4 года назад
That’s exactly what I understood it to be but I calculated 4” (2” for each butt joint x 2) based on your list in the description. I just wanted to confirm if I got the reasoning right and you’ve answered my question. Thank you so much, Denika! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to all the queries. Keep making great videos. You rock!

Hi, how has this dock held up over the years? Have the barrels pushed the top deck boards up?

Do the barrles " suck in" during winter months ? Ive read that the temp differences in summer/ winter cause the barrels to suck inwards in cold weather and that it is ideal to drill a small hole at top of barrel to stop this .
@dcwoodworks
@dcwoodworks 11 месяцев назад
I haven’t noticed. We take it out during the winter months. And it’s been 5 years now and they are holding up great!

Built this dock turned out great only thing was it was hard to see how the barrels were tied underneath
@dcwoodworks
@dcwoodworks 2 года назад
They are tied mostly however you can get them in. In the part of the video I tied them, you'll see theres really no pattern.

How much weight can each barrel support? Curious about barrel sizes (smaller)
@dcwoodworks
@dcwoodworks Год назад
From google: it supports 300 pounds each. So 1200 total but we have had way more then that on there. 10 adults
