I get rid of my worn out Rubicon Express control arms and Build my own ear upper control arms for my Jeep Wrangler TJ. They are made from 1 1/2"- 1/4" wall Dom, with weld in bungs and 3/4" Heim joint kits from Barnes 4WD. We ask the question is it really worth building your own or should you just buy them.

When you use spray paint when youre done turn can upside down and spray it. It cleans the tip and keeps it from clogging when not being used

The main issue when making your own arms is heat control, so that you dont warp the threads. Secondly, Aluminum lowers, especially for the rear, are worth the extra cost.

Great job building those control arms . I thought about doing the same to my TJ , however I just bought my upper and lowers at the time do to time restraints . To do it over again I would build my own for sure . Looking forward to your next video . Keep up the great work . Take care .

Lol been catching up on some sub videos I've missed lately and started looking through a few of yours I've missed and was thinking....man I'm so sick of never having the money to spend on my lift for the zj...maybe I should look into making my own instead of a Clayton 7" l.a. lift.....and here is your make your own video. Thanks guys think I'm gonna look into finding the materials in my area....I'm from Shelton WA

8:15 thats a wild way to measure/mark it out for sure... if you need 14" bolt hole to bolt hole and your joints and bung are 2,5" from bolt hole to tube than you need 9" of tube.. no need for a contortionist act with the tape measure

Use extreme caution spraying something with brake clean then welding. It can give off a lethal gas. I use alcohol to clean grease from metal.

He used the right "Non-chlorinated" in the green can. It's the chlorinated that will kill you- quickly or slowly but either way painfully.

Ya those bolts are to small. I broke the front trac bar bolt at the frame and the upper control arm bolt at the frame. I was doing 70 on the highway and it felt weird, got scary hitting the off ramp. Found the other bolt inspecting the jeep after the trac bar break. Mild wheeling on 35s with long arm Rubicon Express

I was going to suggest Core4*4 as well. I used them for my ZJ lift. Made in the USA and great warranty. I don't have a welder and I'm not that great at fab work to begin with. It always boils down to what is final goal. This setup would be great for offroad, but for on road rubber bushings give you less vibration transfer.
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 5 лет назад
True, if you daily drive you definitely don’t want heim joints, you should go with bushings or joints that will take up vibration. But I am personally not concerned with that, I need strength, since mine is dedicated offroad.

Does it matter that your bottom control arm doesn’t have a bend in it like you other one? Just curious, I am thinking of making my own as well.

You are going to feel everything a little bit more but it’s not bad. I also don’t drive it on the street much.
@yerwrng

The joints are where the cost is at, but once you build a set you can build a new set for the cost of tube should you stretch the wheel base or bend the arm . I built all my new arms with 3/4 thru bolts upper and lower front and rear the rear is ballistic high misalignment chromoly lowers and summit machine uppers the front is polished turd radius arm with synergy lowers at the axle ballistic high misalignment at the frame and EMF rod ends on the uppers with a metalcloak lock n load arm modified to use 3/4 bolts ... overkill, yes sir .

@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 5 лет назад
Yea, it’s very expensive for sure. Even if you build everything yourself it is still expensive, and there is a lot of calculations and engineering that go into it. Part of the cost is someone has figured it all out for you already. I plan on building a rear long arm in the near future. Skid plate, cross member and arms all myself.

Never ever use brake cleaner on a part you are welding. It will produce a toxic gas that could kill you.
