ah the reflective color screen, where you'd fight forever for the exact right angle of light to see the game, but not get glare, the 'gamers twilight' as you will, that after an hour or so would have to change drastically.

We could only play when we drove past some lights so we had to be quick with our inputs when it was dark outside =P But as with almost all things, you adapt and learn to live with it. We even had those clip on lights that 'worked' but were pretty shitty.

I'd wager the reason they don't offer a prebuilt at all is the RFI/EMI testing requirement for electronics sold in the US, which does _not_ apply to kit components. Last time I checked it costs a _minimum_ of about $150,000 to get a consumer-electronic product certified for sale in the US.

I'm definitely less knowledgeable than you on the subject, but when I heard him say they don't sell it pre-built my immediate guess was that "it's not technically a Gameboy, it's a repair kit that just so happens to contain every part you'd need to build your own" so they can (try to) avoid any legal trouble from selling off brand game boys

The terrible standby battery life may be because the FPGA isn't being shutdown or put into sleep mode. FPGAs generally draw several times the power of custom silicon (though this FPGA would naturally be on a more modern process).

I've still got and cherish my Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Advance SP. The Advance SP is actually still shockingly usable (not great ergonomics but very small and light plus has a backlit screen). It was also the ultimate "hide under the sheets" device thanks to both the button to toggle the screen light on/off and the tiny size it folded into. I got caught reading books under the cover a couple of times growing up, but never got caught with the GBA SP. The small size, light weight, decent capacity battery, backlit colour screen and backwards compatibility with GB and GBC cartridges made it the ultimate Gameboy and still one of the all time best gaming handhelds.

@@Omar_Little Not nearly the same thing, I like an Ambernic handheld as much as the next guy, but real hardware handhelds be it OG or FPGA offer less than 0.1ms of latency performance, and with the OLED screen that includes video latency, the Linux based Anbernic's, which have lower lag compared to the android ones, the best you can hope for is 25-30ms for the console cores, and around 25ms for the LCD display, this makes a big difference for the extremely input sensitive Game Boy games, and then there is the audio, whilst the OG Game Boy model has the best audio quality overall, the FPGA has a good 95% audio accuracy, meanwhile even the fastest SoC Ambernic's suffer from audio jitter, clipping and low fidelity overall, though if Ambernic used better quality DAC's and used real hardware DSP's that would change, they don't even give their handhelds proper headphone AMP's.

@@Omar_Littlenot only is the FPGBC more fun than an emulation device, but there’s just something satisfying about physical cartridges. There are a number of DX hacks that upgrade old GameBoy games to GBC color. I’ve been creating carts for all my favorite DX upgrades, providing that physical cart to play for each of them. It’s a TON of fun. Many of these games are tons more fun upgraded to color. Some of them even add new features like Luigi in Super Mario Land! I worked on the RetroFW OS for the Anbernic RG300. I’ve got a closet full of emulation devices. Yet none of them beat my FPGBC. And even an Everdrive flash cart just isn’t as fun as having carts for each game.

Funny playing uses basically the same screws for their replacement shells. Saves in screws when you buy a Shell from them. At least as far as I know from when I bought my GBA Shell, screen and battery

I can't say if they where rare. But I had one. And I don't remember, But I think they where actually and shockinlgy so reasonably priced for nintendo Peripherals. Like less then 30 bucks or so. And I think a little later I additionally bought a knock off one really cheap.

Not rare but not very many games used them on the gameboy color. I think it was primarily pokemon. The only ads I ever saw for the cable were just pokemon ads as well where it shows them tight rope walking between two gameboys.

Congrats on literally catching up to the rest of the internet, Linus! I've had an FPGBC for a while now and it's really good except for custom flashcarts that use OR gates. FPGAs seem to corrupt saves on those carts, so I also picked up a real GBC and modded it with a new glow-in-the-dark blue shell, clear smoke buttons, and an IPS display just for those. Also have IPS-modded GBA SP and GBA with new shells as well. They look and function like brand-new now. I really only use my Analogue Pocket for arcade games and home consoles up to the SNES & Genesis now. That thing is a handheld gaming monster.

I also missed out on Nintendo handhelds during childhood. And now, during adulthood, I've developed an appreciation for classic games. So much so that now I own every Nintendo handheld console, of course, upgraded with better displays and such. I feel a lot of people have gone retro recently, or maybe it's just me joining the retro community that allowed me to recognize those people.

A couple years back, I modded a GBC with a Funnyplaying screen, a USB-C rechargeable battery, a new speaker, and a new power regulator. That thing was nice! I still have it, I need to sell it. It would have been cool to build one of these instead, but I have an Analogue Pocket, so I don't have the desire to build one of these.

It depends on where you are I guess. It wasn't ubiquitous but I had one and you could always count on finding someone who did if you needed it. I specifically remember bringing my gameboy to this summer program where a bunch of kids would hang out at the park and we'd get in groups to trade and battle.

They probably save a bunch of money simplifying the process by only having one option. If not enough people get the preassembled hardware, then the labor for assembling a few units would greatly increase the cost and the niche market would become more messy. If they have framework/iFixit level of instructions, it doesn't even matter IMO

Still grew up on Zelda, warcraft 3, AOE 2, morrowind/oblivion, smash bros, and mario kart.. But in very different ways.. You got me by like 7 or 8 years.

I used to trade pokemon with my little sister. She lost my level 100 Charizard (and whatever low level throw away Pokemon she gave me for it) by pulling the cable out before the transfer was finished. That was pretty consistent whenever I tried to be nice to her... Or many others in life.

I don't think an FPGA that can simulate a PSP would be cheap, I'd estimate atleast a few hundred dollars, since it's got way better specs than gameboy.

Honestly, I've been just as happy with emudeck on my steamdeck for all my gb, gbc, and gba games. Ther ergonomics are better, the battery life is better, and the oled screen is perfect.

I completely understand why they don't offer pre-built options, and I suspect you do too. It's also easy to bake a cake. Any lay-person can do it. However, at the size of a small company, I don't want to pay to have someone bake a cake for every customer when I can just have them put a scoop of flour and sugar into a box and send it. Also, an FPGA is not a processor. It's an array of gates. It can become a processor, but it can also become many other circuits.

@@xorinzorNah Funnyplaying is a pretty established mod manufacturer. Their replacement motherboard/fpga thing is new but they have made and sold their IPS, battery/usb-c and shell kits for a while.
