I'm building a set of 2.8 ATQ cylinder heads with big intake ports to use on my XSPower K04 Stage 3 2.7T motor. I'll be installing SuperTech upgraded valve springs with titanium retainers to be able to rev the motor out to 8500rpm. In this episode I talk about the differences between the port size of the heads, the differences in valve covers and exhaust valves, and then show you guys how to disassemble your cylinder heads. I also cut open a 2.8 exhaust valve and find a surprise, the internet lied to me again!
Next episode I'll complete assembling the fully built heads, stay tuned!

I don’t kno much about my 2.8 a4 b5. I’m planning on just swapping the engine to a 2.7 and use my a4 parts or just try to build the 2.8 engine. Your video did helps me understand more about the engine.

The grooves for the keepers are at a different height on the 2.8 vs 2.7 valves. The 2.7 valves will have more pre load.😊

I removed the lifters on my 1.8t head and forgot to mark the locations. So far 10k miles and no known issues. At the time I read it was more of an issue in v8’s and motors with very heavy springs compared to small displacement multivalve heads.
@PBGarage

I’m thinking so too.

It also has to do with when reusing the same cams and lifters over is the wear. Each lobe wears each lifter different. So you want to put the same lifter back in the same spot with the same lobe it was on to begin with. The lifters and cam lobes do not wear evenly. Example: is like when one cam lobe wears off and none of the other do. Just for proof that they don't wear evenly. You can have a camshaft from the 2.7t engine have a lobe wear completely off. And all the others be perfectly fine. But that's the reason when you reuse lifters and cams on any engine they should be put back. It's not a total meltdown if they're changed. But it's very good practice to use the same spots.

I personally agree with your logic on the lifter buckets. I recently replaced a head on my 2.7 and replaced valve seals, cleaned valves, and ultrasonic cleaned both my heads. I think if you’re taking it all out, cleaning, lapping, and the whole nine, it doesn’t really matter. Have fun with those keepers 🤮🤮🤮
@PBGarage
@PBGarage 3 года назад
Keepers shouldn’t be a problem I have a set of tiny needle nose pliers that work well for placing them lol
@shelbymccaul6505
@shelbymccaul6505 3 года назад
I have long dental tweezers, short tweezers, needle nose players, etc, but what worked best was a small magnetic flathead. It’s the middle intake valve on each cylinder that was the big struggle for me. Eventually I got into a groove.

what does the sodium do? i know citroen did fill theirs with nitrogen back in the days (80's) to keep the colder and nice vid's! doing a full rebuild on my 2000 s4 avant these days too
@PBGarage
@PBGarage 3 года назад
The sodium turns liquid when it’s hot, and then essentially sloshes around from the top of the valve to the bottom as it goes up and down, it picks up heat from the face of the valve and helps spread that heat out through the whole body of the valve so it can transfer to the head and oil, keeps the valve operating properly at high temps like in a boosted engine.

I got mine on eBay but they're available a few places (like Amazon). Just search Cylinder Head Stand, Moroso makes a set, Sealey, the ones I have are SpeedFX. www.ebay.ca/itm/324411421081

They were SpeedFX, bought on eBay. But if you search cylinder head stand on Amazon you’ll get tons of hits. Moroso make a nice set.

Maybe I missed it, but what intake are you putting on it? I know the valves from my experience are all sodium filled so that wasn’t really in question for me, but I thought I remembered the 2.7 valves loading the springs a little more than the 2.8. Did you take that into consideration for your final outcome?
@PBGarage
@PBGarage 3 года назад
I’ll be using the stock intake manifold, but just machining out the ports to match. Good call on the valve stem heights I will have to measure them.
@souly4him
@souly4him 3 года назад
In my experience the valves are the same height but the grooves for the valve keepers are a touch lower on the 2.7 to load the spring a bit more. May not be on all engines but worth a look, and consideration if they do end up being different on yours.
@PBGarage

Hi! Nice work) Can you tell me about supertech valves, how many km you use this? And how it’s work now? Don’t have any problems with valves? I ask because my friend use supertech valves on Subaru and it’s broken! He make new head and use new supertech valves kit and it’s again broke. After I start search RU-vid and find one more video with Subaru broken valves supertech😂 maybe it’s just Subaru😂. But I have same valves kit for 2.7 head and now so scare to install🥶 tell me please how your valves feeling now)?

The lifters being soft or hard just means they aren't compressed with oil. But the lifters should go back in the same spots when using the same cams n lifters again.

It threw me off just because some had no resistance and some were still fully pumped up.

it might be too late but don't install them pumped up. I did that many years ago and fought low compression and misfires. even pulled the head off to change the headgasket.

I'd buy all new valves, the sodium filled valves are overrated, at least at minimum the exhaust valves...
@PBGarage
@PBGarage 2 года назад
I think unless you're going to inconel exhaust valves it's worth sticking with sodium filled. I've used plain new SS ones in a pinch for a low output motor but I have seen them hang up under tough conditions.
