Today's content features some really bad sculpts from the 2007 Classic Battletech Introductory Box by Catalyst Games. In every hobbyist's experience comes lean times, and in those times we need to make the most of what we have. This video shows some steps you can take to conceptualize a Battletech lance and get the models ready for paintin' - even if they are of poor quality.
Interested in getting your own custom lance printed and painted? I'm available for commission work over on fiverr!

Great job improving the figures and doing so with readily accessible materials. Your technique explanations are easy to understand as well. One thing I’d point out though is that for Battletech WYSIWYG is not required, it’s a preference. As long as you have the correct record sheet (classic) or mech card (Alpha Strike) for the variant you identify to your opponent, you’re good to go. That’s one of the great things about BT making it more accessible to all.

Thanks for the watch, and definitely thanks for pointing out the "model agnostic" nature of battletech - you raise an awesome point. The freedom to use a model as any variant is such a great boon to a miniature collection. I suppose I am definitely in the minority wishing to WYSIWYG up my chassis☺

real nice video. I use toothbrush bristles for antenna since they don't stab you or snap off. I hadn't heard of Proxie Miniatures before so I went ahead and picked up some of their bases, thanks!

I really wanted to put together a lance of mechs I normally wouldn't go for, and ended up having a lot of fun with 'em. The paint job was simple, and the conversions were similarly so - they are now a staple in my collection for running teaching games with new players!

Some painters use soft hairbrush filament instead of metal wire. I like it for two reasons. You don't have to worry about stabbing your finger with it when picking up the model or breaking it when you manhandle your minis.
@countryfriedminis
@countryfriedminis 2 года назад
This is a pretty awesome idea, and I think I'm gonna have to put it into practice on some future projects. A bit of flexibility without material deformation sounds perfect for scale antennae. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks a bunch for this video, model prep isn't something I see modern painters cover in their videos, I guess because Warhammer minis don't suck (and they don't have subtle variant differences). It's something I've always wanted to try messing with.
@countryfriedminis
@countryfriedminis Год назад
Though a lot of models these days don't suffer from severe casting issues, it does crop up every now and then. Honestly the prepwork isn't too different from what you'd want to do on modern kits, just a little more involved 😜

While I absolutely agree, I feel that the modern designs have lost a bit of the charm that went into some of the old designs. The new sculpts have done a great job of bridging the gap between the classic drawings and the video game adaptations. They've even ensured that the designs are unified under cohesive design rules. So, yes - they are quite fabulous and very appealing; that said, having grown up on the old ridiculous designs, I rather enjoy the dated doof that is OG battletech.

My 2007 box had a second Catapult instead of a Cicada.
@countryfriedminis
@countryfriedminis Год назад
That's a bit of a double-edged sword there - the Cicada is fun but fragile and terribly under-gunned, whereas a second Catapult could be really effective in certain lance compositions. Still, it's awful to miss out on a piece of the full collection.
@bthsr7113
@bthsr7113 Год назад
I could be focus on the art, but I'm distracted by the choice of having both a Cicada and Assassin. Talk about a handicap.
@countryfriedminis
@countryfriedminis Год назад
It's definitely a plucky group of fragile brawlers. This unit was assembled with that fragility in mind, since the Free Republic Revolutionaries are canonically so very under-strength. I more or less approached playing with this unit as a personal challenge, hoping to field less-than-ideal chassis with veteran pilots to good effect!

@countryfriedminis
@countryfriedminis 2 года назад
@@danmorgan3685 That sounds really challenging. I wonder if the same speckling effect used in sponge chipping (but with various colors layered over each other) would provide an acceptable result! I might have to give it a try sometime😜
@danmorgan3685
@danmorgan3685 2 года назад
@@countryfriedminis I don't think it will look like flecktarn. Probably more like the German Ameba camo pattern used in WWII. My observation is a two or three color camo pattern would work best for Mechs. Hell US armor has been going with desert sand for decades. Look up the camo pattern the French used on their tanks during the Battle of France.
@countryfriedminis
