Building a BIG Rug Tufting Frame! | Sam Made That

It's time to make a BIG RUG TUFTING FRAME! I have a lot of big tufting projects coming up and my smaller tufting frames just aren't going to cut it. So this week I finally built a bigger tufting frame. I ended up building a frame that would allow me to make pieces up to 5ftx6ft. I might go even bigger in the future but I wanted to be realistic about the amount of tufting cloth I would actually have on hand at any given time and a bigger frame means more cloth.
To build my frame I used
2in x 4in x 8ft Pine Stud (5)
2in x 6in x 8ft Pine Stud (1)
4in Construction Screws (1 box)
3pk Carpet Tack Strips (5)
Wood Glue (FREE, I already had some)
Paint (FREE, I already had some)
TOTAL SPENT: $70.17
I already had the necessary tools at the studio which were a
Miter Saw
Drill
Hammer
I built my tufting frame by myself over the course of 3 days and I'm so happy with how it turned out. There were definitely some ups and downs during the process but it mostly went well. I've already done some tufting on it and with was really nice to be able to do multiple pieces as one time instead of waiting for each piece to be done and then having to reset each time.

Hey I’m a contractor and love to see people help themselves with these simple DIY projects. I would recommend next time pre drill your hole with a smaller drill bit this way it makes driving the screw in the wood a lot easier.

My son made me a 4x4 a couple months ago and used the carpet tacks. He used the nails it came with. Well, last week they came off the frame. So we used screws to put them back on. It was an easy fix if it happens🤞

Hey hey Sam. Nice frame. Suggestion: You have a miter saw therefore you can make miter joints with pocket screws. A much cleaner and stronger build.

Both tuftinggun.com and jancrafts.com carry primary tufting cloth that is 13ft wide. I think tuftinggun.com is out of stock of everything but 1yd lengths right now but jancrafts.com has it in stock.

@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 3 года назад
The nail strips that got added in the last step hold the fabric on. The nails are angled outwards on each side so that the grab on to the fabric and hold it in place.

Hi, what are the clamps called to hold the wood while you are sawing? Did the saw come all in one piece with the place you are using to lay the wood on to saw?
@beefknuckles
@beefknuckles 3 года назад
The clamp is an attachment to the Miter Saw. It doesn't come with the saw but you can buy one that goes with that saw. Any clamp will do, though :)

does it move or rock a lot when your tufting on it
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 3 года назад
Not at all. I used wider boards for the feet and offset them a bit so there’s more length towards the back. I’ve seen some people put bracers on the back of their frames that butt up against the wall to keep it from moving

@SamMadeThat

The legs are 46” and are set with the feet so that the frame is 20” off the ground. The feet themselves are 3ft long.

Hi how do we know the dimensions to cut the leg pieces 😓 thanks for the video
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 2 года назад
It’s really up to you and how high you want your frame to sit. My legs were 4FT long and I screwed them in so my frame was 20” off the ground. The extra length just helps with the sturdiness. And then for my feet I used a wider board cut to 3ft long.

Hi lady!! Rookie Tufter here 😀 I just wanted to ask you real quick, if you think tac strip is easier than Staples when using a larger frame? I am starting my first large one and I stapled monks cloth to the frame FOR TWO HOURS🤬🤬🤬 It's incredibly taught lol? Do you think it's worth the effort? (This will be my 4th rug)
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 2 года назад
I do think tack strips are superior to stapling. Mostly because it’s much faster both putting the fabric up and taking it down. Yes you can just cut your pieces off but you still have to deal with the staples stuck in the way on your frame the next time you put up fresh fabric. But mostly I’d go tack strips because you can easily reposition and retighten your fabric as needed.

I’m currently trying to make a 14x14 frame.. help plzzz lol
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 2 года назад
I wanna say mine used a 1 x 4 x 8 board, you’ll only need one. So you’ll need a top, 2 sides and bottom. Your top piece is 14” and both sides are 12”. Your bottom piece will be at least 20”, this is so once assembled you’ll have those little feet that allow it to be clamped to a table. You can screw it together just with regular screws (pre-drill your holes!) or use L-brackets in the corners. Then you just cut your carpet tack strips to size and voila! 14” frame. You’ll be able to do 12”x12” pieces on it.
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 2 года назад
Now if you meant a 14 x 14 FOOT frame you a real one and I cannot help you lol that would be huge.
