This week I did a whole lot of tufting for my very first pop up shop! I've been rug tufting for almost a year now but my inventory was pretty low which means I had to crank out alot of new pieces in a very short amount of time, basically 2 days!
In two days I made-
8 small wall rugs
1 large wall rug
4 tufted mirrors
and 9 popsockets!
That's two days to tuft, glue, back, finish and trim everything!
TIP: Use a fan to help dry your glue faster when you're in a time crunch!

Oh God. Thanks for motivation! I bad now English, so my comment in Russian: Я уже 2 месяца жду свой инструмент (тафтинговый пистолет), и мне обещают его привезти только в конце мая 😩 За это время я узнала всю теорию о коврах, ковровой вышивке, продажах и прочем. Из-за того, что так долго не могу приступить к практике, начинаю сомневаться, бояться и начинаю терять уверенность в том, что всё получится. Спасибо за мотивацию и за такие, казалось бы, элементарные советы об уходе за инструментом, о режиме сна и о питании 👍

Hello, love the videos so informative. You said before you price by square foot. Can you do a video on how you figure that out for irregular shapes
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat Год назад
Even with irregular shapes I price using the longest measurements. An irregularly shaped piece that takes up a 2ft x 3ft space on my frame is still priced like a full edge to edge 2ft x 3ft. 1. it’s still using that amount of materials, and 2.irregular pieces are often harder to prep and finish. But size is just the base price though some pieces that are the same size may be priced differently based on the level of detail and intricacy.

I find it funny how many people say that they love the Robert's glue because it stays sticky. I use Robert's glue and my spray adhesives only. The Robert's glue isn't sticky if you actually let it dry. It remains sticky until it actually dries. It says right on the glue that it needs up to 48 hours for curing, but people keep trying to progress a few hours later. (And if your weather/temperature isn't ideal, it could be longer) My glue is not sticky, at all, when I continue with my rugs.
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 3 года назад
You are correct! It does take up to 48 for full cure so “stays tacky” should probably be extended to “stays tacky for longer”. I personally prefer to work with it when it still has a bit of that tack to make use of its adhesive qualities before it fully cures to fold in the edges so that it removes the extra step of spray gluing/hot gluing them down.

I’ve searching endlessly on amazon for a heavy duty camera with foam inserts and they’re similar but most of them are too bulky, too big, too small and I haven’t found one that I like yet. I added that by latch hooking longer pieces of yarn into the backing. You can kinda see it at 06:24 but if you just search latch hooking tutorials you can find clear instructions. While I haven’t had much experience with wool I would suggest starting with acrylic until you get the hang of your tufting gun simply from a cost stand point. im doing my first pop up shop at a market. kinda nervous. How well did you do on yours? any pointer?
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 3 года назад
I did pretty well on mine! It sounds simple but really just talk to people. Not be pushy but if they get close enough introduce yourself, talk a little bit about your work/process. If you tuft or make something the average person at the market probably hasn’t seen before ask them if they’re familiar with it. If they aren’t, tell them a bit about what goes into making it. If they are, ask them about their process. Make your display as eye catching as you can. If you have some of your raw materials bring those as extra decor. Find ways to add levels to your display and try to bring your work into people’s sight line instead of just letting things sit flat on your table. Make sure you have cards or at least a sign with your socials and website so people can find you after! Good luck!

@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 3 года назад
Hi! So right now I use the Big Twist brand from Joann Fabrics. I usually just buy a bunch when they go on sale. It’s acrylic yarn which I feel is fine for me since most of what I do is for wall display. I know some people prefer wool yarn for floor rugs. I’ve purchased some wool yarn from tuftinggun.com that I plan to fully test but from first impressions it is good quality and comes in beautiful vibrant colors. Downside is that wool yarn is way more expensive than acrylic so you’ll need to bump up your final price accordingly.

@@SamMadeThat ppl looking for ethically source wool from new zealand can just keep looking. the ppl i plan on selling to will be perfectly fine with acrylic yarn at the price point i'm aiming for. if they want want $35/yd tufting material using wool, glued with $70 a gallon latex and professionally serged edges, they're not getting that for what i'm selling for! lol. but, i'm aiming for lightly used functional floor rugs for the most part, with a life expectancy of 3-5 years (kinda making that number up) before they get bored looking at their decorative item and pack it up. i reckon by five years the acrylic yarn, which is essentially spun plastic, will start breaking down. i'm not making $6K rugs meant to be family heirlooms here, lol.

@@SamMadeThat that's good to know because no one has ever actually talked about longevity. the tuft the world/tuftinggun guy, i think his name is tim eads, said wool is the way to go. well, sure, if you can afford it and your clients are okay with the price, lol. he's probably right when he says acrylic strands will break down, but even he didn't mention how long the 'average' rug would last in the real world. he seems to have a lot of disdain for acrylic yarn -- then again he's trying to sell wool yarn and maybe why he doesn't mention how long it lasts is because it could be a very good value for the price difference. when it comes to cleaning, i'm going to tell people cold water, mild detergent, hand wash, and air dry. i plan on doing some experiments (if my gun ever arrives! lol), one of those will be dryer with no heat.

Awwww thank you! I mostly use one of two methods, a soft felt backing with a d-ring or a hardboard backing with a sawtooth hanger. I’ll be posting a video in a couple weeks showing exactly how to do it so stay tuned! ❤️

Glue gloves yes.

Yup. Sometimes those spatulas snag on the yarn. Plus I like that I can really work the glue in with my hands.

I finished my first rug last week and noticed that same thing. I went from foam roller to naked fingers. After I was done, I decided my next move was rubber spatula but somehow entirely forgot that gloves exist. 😅 DONE

Congratulations! A big thick paintbrush works too, like the ones at the hardware store not a fine art/craft brush. But yea with glues you don’t have to remember where you put your spatula or worry about cleaning them off afterwards.

Let me know if you ever want to trade rugs I would love to have one of your pieces and then you could have one of mine or I can do a custom for you! Other artists need love too, you know! I play your stuff in the background literally while I’m punchneedling or tufting, I just love your vibe and support your creativity and awesome oh so artistic brain
