Building a custom Ice axe for Ice Climbing

Ice climbing in the south is a rare moment in time. I wanted to be prepared! I set out to make my own Ice climbing ice axes. I failed the first time, with weak dimensions and low quality metal. After much research the second set of picks worked great. Most people leave making an ice axe to the professionals at grivel or petzl. Not me! In this tutorial I show you how I made an Ice Axe from start to finish. I show you what metal to use, how thick the picks need to be and most importantly, avoiding all the mistakes I made while making your own ice axe. Enjoy & Thanks for watching.

I love this! I would encourage you to check out an ice climbing book or mountaineering book that breaks down the different types of ice axes and the key features to each! This would really help your design. For example the tip of your axes have positive angles and would be much more effective for grabbing small holds, breaking through ice, self arresting... if they had a negative angle on them! I would love to see if you do a V2 this year!

Do you have a recommendation on the book? I lead with these axes this year, they worked but I was a bit spooked at points lol.

Did you heat treat the chromoly steel for optimum performance and safety? If you don't have knowledge of and access to heat treatment equipment, going with AR500 steel or Hardox 500 is definitely the best way to go.

I def did not heat treat the chromoly steel. I can report I lead with these ice axes this season and they survived. The handles def need to be improved. I will check out that steel for my next go around at this! Thanks!
