Hi, just thinking all your vortex filters fed from the bottom will limit your pump flowrate as all the weight of the water. Probably got over 1000litres of water pushing back onto the impeller. Not sure if the vortex filters can work in reverse but that would increase up your flowrate massively. Another solution would be to feed into another open vat higher then the vortex filters, then gravity feed back to the votex filters.. Anyways if I'm wrong please let me know.

Loving the vortex set up so far, It has been very well thought out, especially with the flush system you have installed. So much better to clean in pond water you dont wanna be killing the bacteria thats built up in there for no reason. Fantastic idea

Hey Buddy, I enjoy your videos but i just have a few comments. I have worked in the sewage treatment area for large municipalities for 34 yrs. All of this tech. has been around for over a hundred years. With regard to the fittings,..., those tees are called ty's and they are meant to direct the flow of the liquid in the direction of the sweep, and the gaskets always go on the inside. That helps them swell and form a better seal as well as protect them from the weather. Keep up the interesting videos!

I am loving this filter build even if its soo out of my league! You really are Guru of all aquatic filters and obviously not just pond. I have never looked back after getting your filter media for my aquariums, so thank you :). Please tell me where you got the strong looking egg crate in the bottom of these filters? I a looking for something like this to do a paludarium. Cannot wait for next part of this build cheers Richard!
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
The egg crate is a filter crate from Kockney koi and is normally sized in rectangles of around 16" x 27.5" - I will be using them to create a 'dead zone' under the brushes in the big brush chamber.

Hi great videos. Love the Filter idea for the pond. Although I was thinking with the size of pump and flow rate wouldn't it be more optimal to have the vortex filters in a sequential staging (one behind the other)vs. a parallel setup (side by side). That way each tank would in theory separate different sizes of particles. and thus give you a cleaner output in the biohome tanks and shower filter. It would be really easy to change over too. Have the input come into one Vortex (V) on bottom and connect the top output together with the next one with 90* elbows. and then the bottom of that tank with the bottom of the third. and that gives you one output at the end of the third tank to connect the biohome (u) tanks too. Plus this would help being the middle vortex would be spinning down like a drain it would pull air into the water to help with removing ultra fines in the third tank. so here is a diagram; (pond)--(pump)---_V--V__V---u-u-u---(shower)----(pond)
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
The main problem is with the particle size I'm trying to settle as it's not like a 'normal' situation of large visible lumps of fish muck and therefore much of it stays in suspension unless there is structure for it to cling to, hence the brushes in the vortex filters - I suppose I could have just gone with a rectangle tank for the first stage instead of 'vortex' filters but the base shape of the vortex does lend itself to settlement. I'll see how the flow is with / without brushes and assess the effectiveness of them after a few months of running but they could be altered if necessary since fittings are rubber.

Good work, personally I would have the first one’s outlet connect to the 2nd one’s inlet and then the 2nd one’s outlet to the 3rd one’s inlet, to give a bit more filtration as the water moved through each filter, but hey that’s just me.

Good job, if you put a drum on it you won’t regret it. Just a little one for you, with it being pump fed we always put a float switch on the pump that way if a pipe ever came loose or burst because it froze or something, it won’t empty all your water out. You can raise it but then the pump can burn out. Just a little peace of mind. I know it’s basically a lake😂😂 look forward to seeing the next one👍
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
It would take days of pumping for me to notice a drop in level, lol Yes a drum may be a good solution - I'll see how the 'traditional' approach handles the extremely fine muck then make changes in the Winter if necessary. The pond is close to 20' deep in the middle so never freezes and I've not had a problem with any external filters freezing as a result....so far....
@koiCompetitions
@koiCompetitions 6 лет назад
Pondguru I more meant the pipe work being brittle in freezing temperatures causing a burst. With that amount of water though I suppose the main concern would be drowning the neighbours 😂😂 I’ve just installed 7 drums at the new shop, they just make life so much easier. Hopefully this clears it up for you though. Look forward to seeing the progress.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
I'll make sure I drain out the vortex filters if the system is turned off in the winter but the intention is to run it all year. Yes I wish we had a drum of two when I had the shop as it would have made things easier - a drum at the very start of this system may ultimately be the way forward but I can't justify the expense presently......I'm still saving for a pump. Plus I need a new lawnmower, lol

That's really interesting! I would like to see you design a filter system similar to this setup but a scale down version similar in design for oh say a 90 gal & up to 180 gal. aquarium,.. having the 3 containers ( maybe more if needed)up to 6. Although i'm unsure as to where it would best be located; hang on back, or make some sort of bracket/shelf for the containers to sit at the back of tank just above it??? Basically would be a type of trickle filter or sump but instead of being under the aquarium, it would be visible above the back of the tank,maybe even have an area for house plants(giving u a kind of hydroponic type setup as an option) Also, what kind of containers would be used? Some may prefer clear(acrylic although pricey)some type of see through container,.. maybe some would prefer blacked-out containers.Whatever the choice: They'd join together similar to how you made that huge kick-ass filter for the pond... (Clear or solid color) Would that have different effects on the filtration??? I figure you would best suited for the task if anyone could make it well, you'd be person for the job.. I like watchin' the builds and really enjoy absorbing in all the info/knowledge u share,.. Many, Many, Thx from the good "ole U.S. of A (state of KY).... Rock on !!!

I'm glad you enjoy the videos and I would love to have the time to make all manner of different filters but I'm lucky to get 1-2 hours a week spare at present with the way the business is going - it's crazy. Financially good but mentally and physically draining so I'm really glad I made that 'studio' part in the back of the new cabin. Next major filter project will be to make a concept version of an FX7 from an old FX5 which should hopefully address the lack of media issue with those filters.

Hi rich great video as always. I'm just wondering and I'm sure many others are too, when are you going to do an update video of the jebao pressure filter bakki shower configuration. Since our phone conversation I too have been using the jebao pressure filter as a pre filter and it has been a Godsend especially in the most recent hot spell we have had. My maintenance routine is now a pleasure as there is nothing much for me to do compared to the old chore. Regards Thomas.

The one I used is a Lotus / Sicce pressure filter and I should really do a video showing how it is cleaned out. I will be integrating it into the big filter system - pump in final tub will pump through the pressure filter then up to 2 x shower filters and back to pond. I'm glad you're having good success with the pressure filter / shower combo as it makes perfect sense to use them together.

Nice build. Did you put in a check valve along your inflow route to prevent backflow from the filters to the pond in case of a power outage? It's a little thing but a huge safety feature to prevent the muck from messing up your pond if the power goes out and the filter water backflows to the pond. Easier than losing fish and cleaning the main pond. What will you be doing with the tubs beside your big filters? Now I have to check out your other videos. Cheers mate frm Canada.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
If the power goes out then the water will drain from the vortex filters but the brushes in them should still hold the muck and the bottom of the vortex will hold the muck so I reckon on the scale of things not much will go back to the pond. Each of the sections will be covered in a different video although the next part will have some notes on the 2" fittings I'm using on the inlet and vortex parts as well as the main brush chamber. I've got another 50 big brushes arriving on Wednesday so I'll see how far they go - probably about half what I need for the brush chamber, lol

Nicely coming along ! I see you needed Jesus's help. Yeah you call him Colleen but we all saw it was Jesus ! " if you build it he will come" I guess ...... and he did. lol. A side with the joke ...... Those things looking awesome and can you imagine if all those brushes somehow even mechanically/motorized way could turn the opposite of the vortex inside so it would be more surface touching the water. I hope you make the top removable for easy access for cleaning them. Once it works then every month do just 1 cleaning and next month the other then the next the third and so on. Every 6 months with a giant snake clean the pipes and keep running it with ease ! I can see what a beauty will be when it's completed ! Can't wait !

Its a geat design but I am questioning the 4" rubber elbow. They are routinely used for drain lines and not supply lines and are usually not NSF. I have seen them deteriorate over time and when you remove them they smell like gasoline... Have you had any issues with them? Also, those pre-filter brushes are going to need some regular manipulation to dislodge collected waste. You dont seem to have much room for that. You might get to it later, but I was wondering what the plan is for that? I would put an access door in the deck ..
@richardc1983
@richardc1983 6 лет назад
Hi from Leeds! Great video and project. I love over engineered stuff this is perfect. Quick question though, I have a blagdon all in one 9000 filtration system doing a 400 litre afinity pond. I upgrade if from the pre supplied 3000l system so it's massive overkill for the size pond I have. I can power a fountain as well as a water feature with the pump outlet. I had one going to the fountain and the other just had a L Piece coming out with a small piece of Flexi hose to basically create a circular current in my pond. So the dirt was stirred up from the bottom, kept in suspension then eventually picked up by the filter. Someone told me to use that 2nd outlet instead to aerate the surface further instead of doing the circular flow so now I have a longer piece of hose cable tied to the fountain standpipe so it's also blasting out of the water? Which is better for my pond? The latter means the water isn't as fast moving maybe the goldfish prefer that? But the first one seemed to stop as much settling on the bottom?
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
There is no real right or wrong answer to that as you need decent water surface disturbance but ideally want the muck to be swept into the filter too. Just experiment and see what works best - as long as the fish aren't battling against a current it will be fine.
@richardc1983
@richardc1983 6 лет назад
Pondguru yeah lots of surface agitation and fish seem to prefer it without the water going in a circular whirlpool effect underneath means they can stay still. The other way round seems to keep things cleaner done water tests again today, pH 8.2, ammonia & nitrite both 0 and nitrate 5.0.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
That's a very high pH for a pond but fine for goldfish / koi. Nitrate is high as expected for a pond but unless you plant it heavily or install a shower filter filled with porous media you won't really lower that.
@richardc1983
@richardc1983 6 лет назад
Yeah pH has been consistent at that, someone has said driftwood would lower it a bit? I was also told the nitrate was low. The next level below is 0.
@kierendorrington9779
@kierendorrington9779 6 лет назад
@pondguru why not install the pump after the vortex filter that would pull a vacuum on the inlet pipe of the vortex filter that way the large muck could be filtered before it hits the pump impeller.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
That only works if the filters are gravity fed and are at the same level as the pond water since the vortex units are not sealed there will be no vacuum effect. Ideally this would be gravity fed with the pump at the end of the system but that's not an option on this pond unfortunately.

Can you elaborate why the rubber elements help you change the configuration? With solid PVC as long as you don't glue them, it remains equally possible to change the filter configuration
@pondguru
@pondguru 4 месяца назад
With push-fit PVC the fittings can stick after a few years in one position and the seals can also perish. The rubber allows for easy removal of any of the parts of the filter and since making the video I moved the filter to the far end of my pond. Just use whatever suits your filter situation and budget as there is no set way to put anything like this together.

I used gutter pipe in my filter construction. Beware, the solvent joint leak, but I used silicone rubber to fix this.

The solvent pipe and glue I will be using seems to fuse together and I've never had a leak in 20+ years of using this stuff so I'm sure it will be OK.

Are you not worried about pressure loss from the pump (1 1/2 - 2 inch) to the vortex feed pipes (4 inch)? Why elevate the vortex units? Each one is bottom-in/top-out, so you were already getting plenty of "height" for feeding the downstream containers.

Looking good! Just a quickie, why do you not go 4” straight from the pond? Really look forward to see it all working!
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
If it was gravity fed that would be the way forward but for a pump fed system it generally wouldn't pump through a 4" pipe all the way (unless it was an huge industrial pump at a sewage plant or treatment plant shifting mega amounts of water)

Pondguru thanks for replying 😃 I get ya! Looking forward to see how it all performs! Hopefully it will just be a few months of constant cleaning out of the filters before the pond stabilises.

It should flow through all 3 more or less equally but I'll run them without brushes in to see what the flow is doing before adding brushes back in.

Hi, is 300g of biohome standard filter media enough to fill up 2 trays of the sun sun canister filter? I really enjoy your videos and im Glad that you give good and proper advices unlike fish stores out there. Thanks!
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
As far as I know there are 3 different sizes of the SunSun canisters. Best media would be either the biohome mini ultra or biohome ultimate for a canister filter and the filters hold the following amount in each tray: 1000 lph = 1kg 1400 lph = 1.5kg 2000 lph 1.7kg
@beangween9431
@beangween9431 6 лет назад
Pondguru thanks will be getting the ultra one after much consideration

Biohome ultra is far too big for a canister filter - you would need the mini ultra for a canister.

I haven't managed to do any hobbies at all this year - last time I went metal detecting in UK was February last year, lol I am hoping to do some fishing but my business has been so crazy and I've been doing a load of work around the house in the garden (which I will probably film as it nears completion) so available free time is extremely limited - I'm currently working 10-12 hours a day 7 days a week so when I finish work I'm physically and mentally drained....the good thing about that is I have no problem sleeping, lol The trade site for Biohome is almost complete so I'm hoping when that goes live it will allow various shops and online sellers to take some of the pressure off me by creating other places people can buy the filter media.

After 3 years what is your opinion on vortex filter? Do you have better solutions?
@pondguru
@pondguru 2 года назад
It takes up a lot of space bu in the new filter I moved the vortex filters to they work well to keep the rest of the filter clean. They are also handy as they settle out the muck which is then drained down directly into my vegetable gardens to feed the plants. It's an old way of doing things and for more modern filtration a drum filter or a sieve is definitely the way to go as it takes up so little space compared to the vortex filters.
@rsenn74

Hi… What water Speed (or pressure) is needed for the Vortex for working as intended? My concern is that you will not reach that min. Speed needed to generate the spin. First you pump through a small pipe into the big infeed pipe to your 3 vortexes. The flow Speed goes with the second potence of the Diameter , means the Speed will be much less compared to the original flow Speed. Then you divide the flow into 3 vortexes… and this is without taking in account the fricton losses inside the pipe which is considerable (actually the flow goes with the third potence of the Diameter, means you reduce the Diameter to half, then the flow is 8 times less). I guess your vortexes will just fill up with water without generating the spin… what makes you think this will work? Best regards
@pondguru

Shouldn’t the gasket on the bulkheads be on the submerged side with the locking nut on the outside for ease of tightening?
@pondguru

The fittings can go either way and still work but the seal would not generally be on same side as locking nut.

Hey Richard is there something like bio home I can buy in the US to put in a pressure filter for a Koi pond your friend G-man
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
Most pressure filters don't lend themselves to a really good porous media as the conditions are too dirty for the media to be effective. As long as the media did not affect the foams you could use red / brown lava rock since it has the majority of the surface area externally so works well in muck without clogging. The ideal set up would be to pass the pressure filter outlet to a shower filter and use good porous media in that - then the pressure filter would do the mechanical work followed by the shower filter doing the biological work.

Is there a specific reason for plumbing the vortex filters in parallel???
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
In tandem or sequence - it doesn't really matter as they are really for brushes to 'catch' fine muck. Pondguru I was only wondering if you did it that way to slow the water down to give the suspended solids more time to settle out.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
Due to the tiny size of the particles yes, that was my thinking behind setting them up like this but time will tell how effective (or otherwise) it is.

@pondguru
@pondguru 6 лет назад
The brushes may come out of the vortex filters but I'll see how they perform. The suspended clay particles are so small I was worried that a non-brush vortex would simply spin the particle laden water around and allow it from one part of the filter to the other as I noticed the only place such fine dirt settles out is on the plant roots which are around the pond - brushes are in to replicate that and the next chamber after the vortex units will have maybe 100+ brushes in.
