Forth episode in this mega-filter build for my large trout pond. Today we will take a look at the moving bed chamber and concentrate on the perforated outlet, drain and outlets to the next chamber. Toward the end of this video I go into depth about the pros and cons of different types of moving bed / fluidized bed filter media media and explain how you can boost the biological activity in your moving bed by 40% simply by making the right media choice. Why spend thousands on a fancy filter system and have it under-performing? A cheap DIY moving bed filter with the right media will easily outperform a ready made one with the wrong media.... *Please check with the manufacturer of your moving bed if it will take K1 micro without modification - most will not, therefore the Hel-x 13 would be the better choice instead of K1 standard size* (Both the Hel-x and K1 micro offer approx. 40% more surface area per litre compared to standard K1) The next episode will highlight the two static bed chambers which will be filled with a nation of media. *When using side pressure to cut a hole with a drill bit use safety glasses since a broken drill bit is a sharp object which can damage eyes. Sorry I forgot to put a link in the video description for that. It is called 110 perforated pipe (1000mm length) but can I hell find any suppliers online. I think you may have to contact Kockney Koi directly for that - I just added it onto an order for foams a month or two back. Their number is 08448000000

A clear pond would be a major boost to the way it looks and it's been clear before so it could be clear again. However I recently had a 5 foot sturgeon dropped off by a local koi place which closed down and this was the most suitable pond for it.....that may have been a mistake to put a very large, active bottom feeder in as far as water clarity goes for a clay lined pond, lol

If you have an aldi store nearby they recently had a selection of tools on offer. One that would be of use to you is the set of drill saw bits. Drill bits specifically designed for cutting holes as you do with a standard bit. They also had some universes of circular saw blades in a variety of sizes. Filters coming on great. ATB Steve

The water is going through it now using a smaller pump (12000 lph) to test for leaks, static beds are full of 750kg alfagrog but I will be putting another 200-250kg in the shower container followed by about 300kg of shower media. The water seems to be clearing a bit already in the pond but it is too early to say for sure.

No worries, I'm chipping away at this project when I can but it still is not finished. It's running with a small pump (12k per hour) but I still need to finish the shower part and alter the moving bed to include an air ring around the bottom drain for extra media movement but apart from that (and a big pump purchase) it is done. The large aquarium I have there will be getting used as a part of the filter too but that is a really unusual 'filter' idea which I haven't seen used anywhere so it's under wraps until I get the necessary (living) parts for that one.

Hi Richard, you might want to go round your 4" Bulkhead fittings and change out the coated steel screws and replace them with the same diameter/length stainless steel screws= no rust in the future.
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
The screws are coated but as I mentioned in previous video (you're right) stainless would be the way to go.

Another idea? Use a backhoe to carve into the bank and farther into the yard..put in tons of lava or like that into a lined over cinder block area or even built up with treated wood, and plant water plants while water is pumped over all that and runs down to a big drain pip with a jillion holes and then back into the pond. For that huge pond,a gravel bed of 20 x 20' x 4' deep sounds like a start.
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
I was going to install a huge stream coming down the bank near the pond coming out of a tunnel and using alfagrog behind the walls flanking the sides of it but the quarry I used to get stone from closed down and killed that idea so I went with more traditional filter to enable me to use waste water to feed parts of my garden and (hopefully) restore clarity to the pond.

I had to edit out loads from that bit where I was mentioning people stealing ideas as I was picturing that guy going on a rant about people stealing his ideas and copying him and all I could think was "That's the pot calling the kettle black" and I couldn't stop laughing - I looked like some mental patient, lol At the end of the day there probably aren't any original ideas and I'm sure that some of the ideas I have put out there have been done by other people previously somewhere in the world but I wouldn't knowingly steal someone's idea and pass it off as my own for 5 minutes of fake fame as that would be a very hollow feeling, not to mention dishonest too. There's certainly nothing wrong with people using others ideas if they can relay the information in a different or better presented manner and god knows most people present things better than me so I'm all for sharing ideas around when sources are referenced - I have even thought of re-doing some of my very old videos as the presentation is awful and my voice was even more boring on those videos than it is now (if that is possible....)

Nice job again Richard. It'll be hard looking at ya with one arm and one leg missing..as this filtering beast is going to cost that for sure. Looking forward to seeing your static bed filter design. Interesting.. that I came across one of your coharts on You Tube that touts he has degrees in biology or something and yet his narrative constantly reverses Nitrites are Nitrates and vise versa. We were discussing the static bed and Bio-Home type media...his take on those is that they don't work at all and doesn't using them. Basically saying that studies prove that the bio-mass is so thick on the outside of the media (I think he is referring to aerobic bacteria, which should be correct) that these studies prove that the aerobic bacteria cannot colonize because there is no water flow??? This seems odd, as that environment I would think would be perfect....very low flow of water. Even some very expensive filters that come pre loaded with anaerobic bacteria and a small submersible water pump is designed to flow mere drops of water back into the aquarium. I wonder where can I read these reports for myself. Anyway looking forward to see your static bed design.

great video pondguru and i really enjoy watching your videos and because i do i bought your FRESHWATER 5KG EXTERNAL FILTER UPGRADE KIT from your website for mine my filter and i tested my nitrate and nitright levels today about a week and a half and it was 0 on both and my ph was perfect so just wanted to say thank you... p.s thank you for the extra white pad
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
Awesome result but that is suspiciously quick for a full cycle - are you using any additives with liquid carbon? that would speed up the development of bacteria significantly.
@rustytwinkles7762
@rustytwinkles7762 5 лет назад
hi ponguru no i just put the 5kg of Biohome Ultimate in and the pads and the filter starter jelly balls in and i have put in the water the tap safe and thats it nothing else has gone in no liquid carbon no carbon in the filter.. i filled up the tank on the 11th of October and the filter has been on since then and i tested it on the 17th of October.. my filter is a AQUARIUM FISH TANK EXTERNAL FILTER EFX+ 2000L/H 9W UV STERILISER from all pond solutions. and my tank is a fluval roma 240.. thank you for replying back
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
It could be that the nitrite and nitrate haven't had a chance to rise yet maybe? Generally it takes 2-3 weeks for the aerobic part of the cycle (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite) then anywhere from 1-6 months for the anaerobic part of the cycle (nitrate reduction). We have had a few reports over the years where ammonia, nitrite and nitrate remain zero after the first week and beyond, even when a tank gets fully stocked and I'm still bemused at those cases.

Hi Richard I seen the sturgeon the the koi place that closed. It was a beast of a fish. Real shame about the place as I been going up there as far as I can remember. Only got place on valley now and I think it’s expensive.
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
Yes the independent places are disappearing and we will be soon in a situation like the US where everywhere is a Petsmart. I rarely see that beast of a fish but when I throw food in I can see bubbles rising up from the bottom of the pond so it is keeping it stirred up which should be really good for the health of the pond since there is bound to be a nation of old leaves in there - hopefully the filter will catch the muck getting stirred up and the sturgeon will eat the crayfish which are digging into the clay base. I can only imagine how big it will grow in here, lol

Actually just got to the bit with the DIY venturi, I feel like that's backwards and might get you two jets of water instead of two sucking air pipes. I thought the idea was to have the water rush past either side of the insert with the notch/angle facing away from the flow, there will be a low pressure zone created in the hose in front of the inserted part, and that will make it suck air. I don't know though so I'm keen to see what happens! You're the Pondguru after all not me lol
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
If it doesn't work too good like it is in the proper flow (when I get the big pump) I will turn the ends of pipe around and if it still doesn't work I'll scrap the idea, lol Actually what you're saying makes sense there.......thanks for that. I only have a 12000 lph pump operating at present so there is barely a trickle compared to when I get a proper sized pump. The last thing I want is water squirting out of the 'air' pipes.

You should know that you don't need to worry about the water quality of your filter. Your pond is already doing a fine job of looking after it self in a green kind of way. Your filter can only improve what nature is already doing.
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
Yes the flora and fauna in and around the pond tells the full story of water health but it's really the clarity that I want to be better and well over half of this system should contribute toward that goal. Having any pollutants worked on is a bonus too - just added 750kg of alfagrog in the 2 next chambers, lol
@eisenklad
@eisenklad 5 лет назад
i do hope you have a kit measurinng the water parameters before this mega filter is powered on. and everytime you do a pond update, you can do a quick test to show how well the filter has matured. once the results have plateaued then you can stop taking the test. kinda like what Aquarium Adventures did on his BioHome long term test video
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
I don't think the filter will be big enough to affect the quality of water as that is already good but the clarity is that main concern. If I can restore clarity that will be a major win and I'm hoping the static parts of the filter will be a breeding ground for invertebrates which will serve as fish food when they make their way through the system and out to the pond.

lol, yeah people naturally assume that I have some major beef with him just because he took one of my ideas and many of other people's ideas and presented them as his own but (while it's not exactly an honest thing to do) it has ensured that the ideas get out there and that helps to benefit the community so it's all good with me. Really it's no different from a channel with 10 subs stealing someone else's ideas and it tends to be what some characters do so people need to get over it. When you put ideas out there the genuine characters will reference where they saw the idea but not everyone is like that and I'm sure if I was treating the channel as a business I'd be desperately looking for new content to allow for as many uploads as it takes for a channel to go viral so it's entirely natural to run out of ideas. I'm glad you enjoy the videos - thanks for watching.

So in a aquaponic system you want the nitrates. so a moving bed would be great to feed the plants.
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
Yes you really want to forget about the last part of the cycle if you have hydroponics / aquaponics system so using plastic media or cheap ceramic rings is a good one in that situation as it creates a nitrate factory.

@StanTheObserver-lo8rx
@StanTheObserver-lo8rx 5 лет назад
The thing about all that plastic media?..its all got a smooth surface. Shiny. I would think there must be some kind of acid dip for them to rough them up? Or tumble in sharp sands and all that would double or more the surface area. Or,if you have the time leave all that new shiny plastic in the hot UV summer sun to take the shine off. Seems to me that would make them equal to porous stone without the weight.
@StanTheObserver-lo8rx

lol at the clay - I added about 20kg over the moving bed media on the first day of running it to encourage it to move and to add trace elements into the system.
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
It is running but only with a 12000 lph pump and I haven't got the shower part ready yet as I need a few more crates for media in the tub there and it will require the 12000 lph pump for that part. I'm also going to add something which I don't think has been seen in a pond filter before too but I will need to get something really specific for that part - it will utilize the large aquarium I have there as part of the filter but nobody would be able to guess what will be going on in there.

lol, yeah, but there is way more than one dong in this hobby and while I appreciate that there are now very few original ideas it takes a special sort of person never to reference where the 'inspiration' came from but that's just what people are like now - taking credit for the work of someone else is awful and must be hollow feeling but it goes on all the time. I used to get riled up about it but now I just think it's kinda funny as anyone with a penchant for crapping on people get found out pretty quickly by the genuine folks and shunned. I'd rather be Mr. Obscure and well thought of than raking in money dishonestly as I've said so many times the pursuit of money is the pursuit of suffering. Keep on keepin' on and keep on truckin'....

I currently have a water butt as a radial flow filter so all big bits sinks to the bottom and then it exits over filter floss changed every 2 days before dropping into the static bed. After the moving bed it goes into a mini bakki shower with a piece of jap mat at the top and then pumice stone in the bakki. Then down a waterfall. There may be enough air dragged in just from the outlet of the brush chamber and as it falls so far it should mix well with water in the moving bed part but time will tell - I don't have a big pump for the system yet.

The first video in the series explains the full set up but when I get the various parts of the build all uploaded I will then collate them all into one very edited down video which will hopefully be easier to watch and make more sense as it will be a straight progression from beginning to end. On the subject of people passing off others ideas as their own there are way too many people at it. I even had one guy (quite well known, 10's of thousands of subs) replicate the 'how to set up a canister filter' video I did a few years back and miss out the most important information from it regarding anaerobic bacteria, presumably as he couldn't comprehend what it was useful for. Could be a coincidence? Well, he copy and pasted the full description from my video minus the important links to further information and put that as his description. Proper amateur thief...... At least the fakers higher up the food chain on RU-vid have the fully developed skills to block you first before they pass off something as their own idea and take the time to add their own video descriptions to make the deception more believable for sheeple, lol

hahaha, really! thats funny, its so sad that people steal ideers. A lot of mine, i found 2 be invented before, or something close 2 it, some bether some worse. Just seen the first video, still cant see it. :D So u want the Alfagrog's internal anaerobic bacteria 2 do the removing. with the outside aerobic, since u have all that flow, mby u dont force it through the media, but just over it, like a deep gravel in akvariums? it would be really stable, but not really effektive, and a pain 2 clean. Why do u do this 2 me? its like a riddle, kind of like it. A link 2 a normal sulfur reaktor. reefkeeping.com/issues/2009-01/diy/index.php It would be great 2 get the solids out of the water, and use less watts on lifting the water, but i like the budget diy theme. I didnt know the shower came after, sry. The microlife is a very cool ideer.
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
Yes the crates of alfagrog will be basically replicating an idea I saw 20+ years ago which used pumice cat litter in trays of a slow moving tank for nitrate removal in a koi pond - the idea is still reasonably popular in Europe and has been mentioned a few times in RU-vid videos - often called anoxic or biocensus? (or something similar) filtration. The last video on a system like that for an aquarium has some joker in the US claiming that he invented it so I turned it off, lol The majority of the water in the static beds will go around the outside of the media crates.
@propsygun6024
@propsygun6024 5 лет назад
hm, clever, so u can move the crates 4 cleaning, and only a bit of water goes in the middle of the crates, thats smart, r u gonna use sulfur, in the middle of the crates? it rly boost the life. its save if u do it right. Im from Denmark, didnt know kalness came from here, well the US really like inventors, and pride. it makes 4 a wierd combo, where people lie a lot, so they can be proud of being the first one. They r so religious but have forgotten the death-sin Pride! hehe I have an ideer 4 a screen filter, like drum, or sieve, but i dont have a pond since i moved, even sold my aqariums. :( looking at youtube is not the same. I can send u the plan if u wanna do something different as mekanikal pre filter at some point, i cant claim im the inventor, just because i havent seen anyone els do it. ;) now stop talking 2 your viewers an make more videos, we cant wait. ;)

Thanks Richard love your channel as it is so real world with no faffing about. I know you don't advise using Purigen in filtration systems but is it because you think the Purigen itself can wipe out the bacteria or potentially recharging it with bleech can then wipe out the bacteria. I use your bio home ultra in my tanks and have a perfect full cycle but I do have a bag of Purigen in my sumps as a safety net. I've never had a problem but I have never needed to recharge it. @pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
Thanks for the report - for every 20 people linking the purigen to bacteria population collapse there is 1 who has no problem so it's important to hear when something works without affecting bacteria. It could be something which has a tipping point and I'd imagine the amount used in a sump will proportionally be less than in a smaller system (and you'll have more media in a sump too). If it works for you that is good but recharging anything with bleach then having to fart about with specific chemicals to ensure it doesn't wipe out bacteria isn't my idea of fun - It's like playing Russian roulette...

@@pondguru I wont deny its a bit of a faff but its tedious rather than difficult. My use case is the premade 100ml bag in the bottom of an FX6 on a 100gal, I used it purely as a carbon replacement for removing wood tannins etc, not as a ammonia/nitrite/nitrate control media, and my water clarity is immeasurably better for using it. In my humble opinion purigen doesnt harm bacteria one little bit, its the poorly executed recharge that kills the bacteria, what with bleach being anti-bacterial an all! But we are lucky in the UK, a certain supermarket's value range of thin bleach is 5 times (give or take) lower in concentration than the sechem recharge instructions (risk reduced by 5x already). I soak 24hrs in bleach, 24hrs in water with prime and then 3 days of soaking in plain water changed each 24hrs, rinsing under a running tap once a day too, so the bag is out of the filter for a week. I've recharged the same bag 4 times now. You of course dont have to recharge it, you could just bin it and replace it as you would with carbon.

It would probably enable air to be dragged right down to the bottom but the moving bed media tends to operate in the top 2/3 of a container, even when it is fully mature. I've got a 6000 lph pump in there shifting it around now but I reckon I'm going to go with an air pump with a DIY air pipe attached to the drain pipes as they are perfectly placed to distribute air and move the media properly. Having that in addition to the water falling into it with a big pump should really shift the media well.

I've got plans to make a 1000-2000L aquaponics system in 2019 (I'm just West of Hexham) - I'm thinking I'm going to have lots of questions that you'll be able to answer... I'd be interested to know what you think about keeping small numbers of fish in IBC containers - from the fish's point of view I mean? I intend to build both moving and static bed filters, along with a small vortex filter, but only use the static beds throughout the winter when the plant growth is low. If I can find a supplier that would sell me small enough quantities of fingerlings, and build a setup with high flow rates and clean enough water, I'd eventually like to expand the idea and try growing trout rather than goldfish - which is what I planned to start with on my initial build (obviously, am not eating the fish that time round - just the veggies lol). What do you think? Am I cream crackers or is this a feasible way of growing some fish?! Smashing videos by the way, I envy your pond setup!
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 лет назад
I'm personally not a fan of growing food this way as it is very intensive and fish need space to develop proper muscle meat. Slow moving fish like Tilapia seem OK for growing in aquaponics systems but they won't survive our climate - best to have a very large pond to grow our UK species of fish but the actual set up you propose sounds sensible. Feel free to phone any time or swing by to see what the filter I'm building is composed of, no worries. 07772848730 Regards, Richard

@@pondguru Thanks for the swift reply! That was my concern, that there wouldn't be enough room for the fish. My intention is to maybe have 8-10 500g fish per 1000L tank by the time they are taken out for food, so maybe that's enough space for a slower species. You're dead right about the temperatures, and that's what led me to the Trout - Catfish were another thought, but in the words of my friend, I would "struggle to have it not taste like s**t"! (he's a chef with an aquatics habit/hobby). I think I'll try the system with the goldfish, and see how I get on, and have plenty time to think in the meantime. @@banksarenotyourfriends Getting good tasting fish will be a major battle, even when filtration is perfect on a small system as the diet will be restricted compared to a natural pond / river environment but if you could integrate a water cress bed into the system the roots would support a vast amount of water lice and shrimps to feed the fish naturally and supplement a pellet diet. Yes no worries feel free to ring any time as the filter is running now, just need to finish the shower filter part and get a bigger pump for it (ideally something between 20k - 30k per hour) then I can use the 12k pump for the showers. I'm gonna have to have a long hard think, as you've given me plenty food for thought there. Really appreciate it, cheers. Not convinced those venturi pipes are going to work. The theory is obviously correct but I think the direction of the cutout is actually going to collect the water flow and force it up and possibly out of the green pipes. The cutouts need rotating 180 degrees to point downwards so the water moving past sucks the air in as it goes past.

Somebody else previously mentioned that too and I reckon you both have a point. I should really test it but the main aim of the filter is to clear the water. It's thriving with all sort of life from big fish down to a nation of invertebrates but more clarity would be nice. When it gets up and running I'll test the water from the far end of the pond where all the uneaten food collects and also at the filter outlet as that will probably be the best indicator of any change but the filter probably won't mature until well into next spring.
