Maybe a cost rundown of how much the real deal would cost if it were all "attainable". Meaning, the exact models and pedals mayer uses and what it would actually cost if budget were no concern.
I have 2 cents to give. I understand you not including patch cables in your $500 but to not include shipping is odd. Shipping, like tax is part of the cost of the pedal (or any item you purchase). You may argue that you could just pick it up, thereby saving on shipping, but if you can't pick it up, how are you going to get it? If you must have the pedal shipped, you must include the cost. That's my 2 cents. ✌️🇦🇺
@@joreyreitman9655 I mean doing a demo for every one of these videos is just impossible because it'd be $500 here, $1000 there, another $500 for this one, I'd spend a lot to just build a board I'd never use again. I think it's pretty obvious all of these choices would work as we know what pedals he uses and what parts need to be covered.
This is great content. Thanks for doing this. You definitely chose some I wasn’t expecting, so a fun watch. A cool challenge would be to do this for various eras of JM gear too.
I really like this. I am obsessed with boards and pedals and I love videos helping with you make a budget board especially out of the pedals the artist use not a cheap alternative I'd love to see more videos like this
I highly recommend the Ibanez TSMINI Mini Tube Screamer. It sounds incredible, it’s only $80 new, and it’s half the size of a regular pedal (saving you space). I’d pay twice that or more and still be satisfied. If you’re a Stevie Ray Vaughn fan like John is, you’ll love the tone you can get on a song like Pride & Joy.
This is great! People think they need to spend way more then they really have to. We are absolutely spoiled with great, affordable options nowadays. Expensive toys are great to have if you've got the cash but history is filled with era-defining music made with super affordable tools. Great job!
Nice one I would choose bit different pedals All prices in CAD Behringer TO800 - 32.99 Harby Centauri - 189.00 EHX Micro Q tron - 105.00(used) TC Sky Surfer - 56.99 TC Prophet - 54.99 EHX Memory Toy - 125.00 JHS 3 Series Chorus - 90.00(used) or Liquid Chorus and echo - 110.00 (used) I would be put more money in Klon Style pedal as it can be used as a clean boost. But Awesome choices Justin🙌🏻
Great board! I would also maybe use the micro q tron over the clean boost. If I’m not playing live I don’t often use my clean boost. During the sob rock tour, he played i dont trust myself and rosie a decent amount of times and he might’ve used it for other songs too. Just a thought! Great vid though
I don't want to drive the price up but if anyone is looking for another alternative to the CE-2 I bought a Boss CE-2b from the 80's and have been loving it. I got it for $100 CAD ($80 US). If you look at the circuit diagrams they are almost identical, with a few component changes to tailor it to bass. I haven't done a side by side, I suspect the CE-2b has a bit more treble but what I can tell you is it sounds awesome and definitely gets close to John's tone for 1/3 the price.
If I remember correctly, Josh Scott from JHS pedals said that the Conspiracy Theory is his favorite klone. His credentials? He owns Klon number 1 off the production line.
Thanks for the vid, Justin! Yeah some higher Budgets, maybe two more steps would be interesting. The same for other eras as well. I do have the Tumnus on my board. It's one of my always on pedals.
Maybe in the future, you could do a board combining John Mayer and John Frusciante. Like a sort of coverband/tribute board that does the tones you and we love
A stream of you going over a higher budget would be cool. Then you could make a condensed video like this afterward that uses the pedals sourced during the stream. We could work together on it!
I remember you did a similar video before over on the Gear Lounge youtube channel, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Did you take that video down? :o
Practice is actually more important than any pedalboard but If I were to build a JM inspired pedalboard I would buy Boss DM3, Boss CE3, Maxon VOP9 and Ibanez GE10.
Nowadays Chinese pedals are really the dollar for the buck. I think the notion of saving for a "brand" pedal is only valid for a handful of countries. Most countries the dollar exchange is 7 plus and you can't find those pedals anywhere. A simple Ibanez TS you can't find in the stores in my city and if you go to the capitals, you MIGHT find one but for 7 times the value you would pay in the US NOT including the taxes which are usually insane in these countries and also NOT including the profit that the store has to make. Over the course of 20-30 years you MIGHT have original brand pedals but until then you have to pay dues. Just how things are lol. There are some REALLY good Chinese pedals that sometimes can hold their own against the original us pedals. You just need to give em a chance trust me haha
What's your take on this guy's options? Have you had any experience with Sonicake? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QHfPnwPSsFM.html Looking forward to building a pedalboard. Thanks for these guides.
don't buy a bunch of Chinese pedals, build them up over time *me who bought a bunch of donner pedals last year after tomo fujita recommended them: 😬 *I do have brands like electro Harmonix, but it was black friday and they were so cheap and I was like I'ma get all the pedals that I don't use that much from them
