Building my Honda Del Sol! Part 1: PAINT PREP AND BODY WORK

My dad being a jack of all trades Vietnam veteran. Has taught me most everything growing up and shadow coats were always a Matt black rattle can/pressure pack. Nearly any colour available will work. Using panel beating tools to eliminate Bondo/Bog is where the art is

I think it’s Awesome that you’re trying to do things yourself and not afraid to jump in and learn how to do new things, so hopefully you can do it yourself in the future!!! Great Job Mike!!!

Bro so glad you have another del sol and your gonna use parts from your first car to make a fresh one, its a shame you can't restore the first one because its to far gone but it will give you the parts you need to make up the new one, thankfully the heart from the ratted one will live on in the new shell :)) keep up the good work buddy, can't wait to follow you on the journey with the del sol!!

This is the perfect car to learn body and paint work on because it's definitely in rough shape but you will be able to see what to do and what not to do and make it extremely better than what it was or would have been. And it will be super satisfying to see it done in the end and even if it's not a perfect professional job you will know that you did it yourself. Plus it's a small car and you have the help of some really talented people with all the right tools and I think you have the patience to do a good job and you will definitely learn a lot. 👌👌

I really hope you make this car as close as perfect as money allows and Bswap it. Leave the nostalgia parts of the other car IN the other car. Let it be complete, for nostalgias sake, and build this one clean, like all your other builds. I feel like both cars deserve it!

Awesome tackling this yourself! Just make sure you keep the sander flat so you don’t dig or miss any spots!

For reference..Guide Coat is used over high build primers to show any low spots i.e. dents and dings..with blocks not a da. You won't get it completely straight with a da sander. I do all old vehicles mostly trucks hotrods so iv been doing it since I was 18 and I'm 36. Sand the whole car with 80 then fix dents.

Know you have always been hands on with the work but it's great to see you pushing yourself and learning new things and skills. Too many other RU-vidrs don't and end up being a car collector who pawns the work off

I feel like Trevor from motion auto would be down on a collaborative effort. Of all the people close to you that are available that I am aware of he's probably the best at body work and the most likely to be keen.

A good K24 swap would make this thing a beast I have a 14’ accord that has a k24 6 speed manual from factory and always heard it’s a good swap for earlier Hondas

I'm excited to see this build. I have a 97 delsol si and I love mine. You don't see many nowadays and there are not many people that like sols. I have a soft spot for 90s Hondas.

I wish I could accept such a realization. My Sol (that I have owned for more than 20 years now) is starting to get holes the size of multiple fingers in it but I still can't bring myself to just give it up. It literally needs everything at this point, but I'd still rather restore my car than have another. I guess it would be different if I let go of the car already at some point, but I've actually owned my first car for 20 years now and it's hard to just give up.

Can you imagine driving this car in Japan? I been there you would not believe the narrow roads. Small is king in Japan. The new American Hondas would not be fun. But Honda is going to sell a new Prelude . It will be a two door car

Ima say it in all del sol videos as i did in the intro of this series. Ruin sol has to be a decroation somewhere on the compound. In one of the trails or hiding around a corner while drifting but won't get hit

Love the drive to do it yourself Mike, but maybe next time borrow a couple fender/body hammer & dolly tools or go to Harbour Freight/Northern Tools to make it a little easier on you + the area you want to address. Either way nothing beats you doing it yourself. Definitely keep the OEM color as you said ~ it'll be that much better in the end!

Im not sure if you have said what colour your painting the car but dam that green on the underside of the trunk is 🔥

Good work getting this done by yourself just keep in mind when using the DA sander to keep it as flat as possible while you sand when you tilt it to the side like I saw you was doing in the video what it’s really doing is making small dents and causing low spots and causes more work for you

nice video, even though there is enough ventilation because the doors are open, it is wise to use a face mask when sanding the hood. safety first.

Good to see you diving into the body work 💯👌🤙It takes a good few months to get the hang of and to get the eye and toch for body work, Painting is less labour intensive but alot of skill involved to get it right 😅 Primer is easy because if you mess up you canjuet sand it 😅

Rather than burning the cash on buying all new hardware, it might be a good idea to invest in a passivating/plating kit to re-zinc the current hardware if they aren’t marred; especially if you/friend have another project in the future or want to try passivating the hardware in a colour or different finish other than zinc, might save you a lot in the long run; love the projects can’t wait to see what you do with this one. Also are you going to try and make the entertainment system in the rear of the century work? Or the nav unit in the front?

They got great deals on totes at Sam's and Costco and Walmart right now. That's what I'm doing with my car while I'm stripping it down to be remade

I noticed when you sanded you had the sander at an angle keep it as flat as you can going in different directions

My Indigo snakes (drymarchon) have never bitten or jumped at me outside of the enclosure. Even wild specimens don’t strike 99% of the time

Body work isn't hard it's tedious but sooooo worth doing yourself because of the end result and reward!!

The ruined sol fueled my need to build my del sol 8 or 9 years back and I've missed it every day since I sold it

You could go with a nice brown for the paint to kinda have the same vibe as the original

Just get a new fender trust if it’s got that much filler in it it will crack later on and waist your time easier to start fresh
