Hello and welcome to BOAB Models - today we'll be building the Lotus 99t from the 1987 Formula 1 season. The kit is 1/43 scale from Heller.
Are they any good though?
The Lotus 99T is a Formula One car designed by Gérard Ducarouge for use by Lotus in the 1987 Formula One World Championship. It was driven by Brazilian Ayrton Senna in his third season with the Norfolk based team and Japanese rookie Satoru Nakajima who had joined as part of the deal with Honda.

The decals give this car the perfect look, I did not have the Camel logos back then. Very nice! I also liked the flimsy mirrors, by far the smallest part in the kit 😁 they add some fine detail.

Thanks - I can imagine getting the right decals was almost impossible in the time before the internet. They could have easily not included the mirrors but they do add something definitely

After going to NNL EAST I was intrigued by these smaller scale kits. I picked up Heller Lancia Beta Turbo kit for $12. Anyhow I may use original livery decals that came with the kit or replacement decals. You did a great job on your build! Cheers

Yes, Heller 1/43 and 1/24 cars are very good indeed (mostly....). These are definitely on the list - hopefully a re-issue is on the cards

Nice build Thomas, I built the McLaren when it came out, 1/43rd scale seem to be popular with heller for some reason at the time, it was the only way to build a MP4/3, take care

Thanks, Sarah Jane. I guess the MP4/3 was one of the less successful '80s McLarens so maybe they didn't celebrate it like the others. Airfix seem to be releasing some new 1/43 kits now too.

@@BOABModels The MP4/3 was the last Tag engine car, although I do have a picture of it with a Honda engine, saw it at a car show at the end of the 1987 season, the MP4/3 like other teams couldn’t compete with the Williams. Model on

I think I've seen the same photo of it with the Honda engine too now you mention it. I was listening to the Race's podcast last week and they were discussing whether if Williams had been able to keep Honda for 1988, maybe the McLaren wouldn't have been so dominant.

@@BOABModels at the time Williams were quite upset with Honda, senna wanted Honda engines and basically took Williams engines to McLaren, quite a coup by Ron Dennis, piquet wanted out from Williams but like everyone wanted Honda engines so jumped to lotus who stayed, with the suspension stuff that Patrick Head was doing Williams would certainly given McLaren a good race definitely.

Foam safe superglue? Do you have any recommendations on what product? Also, why do you use it?

It's a little more gentle than most CA glues and if you use it sparingly, it won't haze clear parts. I got mine from my local hobby store in Coventry but a more international brand would be Bob Smith Super gold+
