In this video we are building the gas tank for this mini Baja Bug project. I decided to put the gas tank in the front above my feet because that was the best place for it. we are building a Mini Baja Bug using a Polaris XLT 600 two stroke snowmobile engine and a go kart fiberglass body of a VW bug.

Awesome aluminum work! The one inlet is not enough your feeding 3x38mm carbs do a twin setup.

I agree. It will always run fat with that small intake. Duels running between the plugs would look cool too.

It’s gonna run that far cylinder on the fat side too. The sharp bend/turns is bad for flow too. There’s a better way to do it, but it’ll take a lot longer to weld up.

I agree, it definitely needs another air intake between the second and third intake chambers, having just one offset like that will cause really bad turbulence inside the airbox possibly starving air to one or two of the carbs by creating a vortex that literally sucks air out of one of the carbs.

I personally don’t care if you do fifty videos on this build it’s an amazing project and you should definitely be proud of your work! This is better than any type of buggy that someone could commercially buy! Yet again truly great build ❤

Just a small rule to go by , 2 stroke is gonna use 2 times the air of a 4 stroke of the same cc . That is not enough air at all for that motor, like others have said , do 2 intake pipes and it will even out the air to each carb.

I think you should put a second inlet neck with a second intake tube and air filter on that intake. Just thinking about how fast a 2 stroke sucks air into all 3 cylinders vs a 4 stroke that has delays between cylinders per se, with time for the 2 extra strokes between intake strokes.

Hey Chris. I enjoy your videos very much. I'm not a machinist like you, but I do remodeling and repair on residential homes. As far as the vent in the gas tank. How about installing a check valve in the vent . I would hate for you to be behind the vent and have gas spitting you in the face. I say this because when plumbing drain lines for water, a vent needs to be installed for the same reason you use to vent on the gas tank. The vent I use for the drain lines has a check valve incorporated into it. This keeps the water from backing up and spilling out all over the place. Thanks again for your dedication. You certainly have a great love for what you do because your very good at it. Thanks again Chris for what you do, your very much appreciated! Pete.

5 seconds into this video, and I'm already so happy that you put the gas tank exactly where it belongs in a VW Bug! Obviously, at the scale you are using, in addition to the complexity of making a slugbug into a sports vehicle, the engineering that you needed to put into that gas tank is well beyond the barrel tank in the original slugbug. Similar gas milage, I'm guessing, but who is having more fun? Are you a mass production yet? When can I buy my micro bug for my mom? Probably when I have money... "Building a great thing is easy." #easy? Production of a great thing in high demand is harder... Look harder... When people want your work before they can afford it... Great place to be!

As always, I'm in awe of your fabrication skills, you're becoming something of an artist with your skill level. Honestly a pleasure to watch you work! I'm going to go against the flow here and say that your airbox is going to work out just fine. I just don't see you needing a massive amount of airflow to begin with, and I believe that what you have there will be just fine. I'm eagerly awaiting your next video!

You need to add a second outlet from the airbox as the design you have now will make jetting a nightmare due to differing airflow to the end carb. Trust me you want them all getting the same flow. As it is now, the last carb will run leaner than the others.

@NotaRobot_gif

You might have tuning issues. The airbox should have a large volume because there will be a back pulse from each carb. I would cut out the rear bar and make a airbox 3x larger and also center the inlet or use two inlets. Everything has to be balance or you will get inconsistent airflow which MIGHT lead to turning issues. Nice build! Best of luck!

A little silicon spray on the boots makes carburetor installation a whole lot easier. Also, an ultrasonic cleaner is a pretty cheap investment, considering the time you save by not having to clean the carbs by hand.

The air box is not going to allow enough air flow. Make chambers and smaller individual intakes that lead to one large opening. It may run but you’ll feel the need to constantly tune your carbs. At low rpm you’ll probably be ok. You’ll feel a lack of power at high RPM the pistons will be pulling way to much vacuum.

Your Aluminim Welding is next level. 👌 The Air box may be a bit restrictive regarding Air Tubulence (abrupt changes) in airflow direction thus lack of flow. You could try bring all three Air intake pipes up & over top of engine at a smooth & flowing manner, before merging in to a chamber or even each other. Heat shielding would most likely be required between Airbox & engine. Loving the build series. 👍

Use a breather hose on the gas cap and let it stick up like an antenna. They're generally 3-5 inches long and have a CNC aluminum breather tip. Let's air in the tank but won't let fuel out. I use them on my motorcycles and that's right between my legs. It's super rare to even get a drop of gas out of the breather.

For venting the gas tank, I suggest have two vents, one each side of the tank and put rubber tubes from each crossing back accross the car and up the roll cage on the oposite side. I have had trouble with my car, with a full tank of gas, if the car is parked on a slope in the sun, the fuel expands and may exit via the vent if pressure build up. So there needs to be a vent on each side with a tube to a higher point on the chassis. These need to cross over or fuel will exit when you are doing a hard turn. Use very small diameter tubes.

Ah ... That's maybe the best location for that gas tank you could have chosen. It's going to be easy to refill, it looks as though it will have a fairly large capacity, it'll add some much needed weight to the front end so you can keep those front wheels on the ground so you can steer it under acceleration, it is occupying a volume inside the fiberglass body that otherwise would have been difficult to utilize as efficiently, and best of all it's actually in more or less the same location as the fuel tanks were in the original air-cooled Type 1 VW Beetles.
