In today's video, I'm going to show you how I built this really simple yet extremely elegant Floating TV Shelf.
I built this shelf to bring in some modern design to my tv wall in my living room. As most TVs have everything built-in nowadays I had no need for a big cupboard below. So I decided on a white oak shelf.
The shelf itself is tied into the main framing of the house and the finished shelf is created by white oak veneered mdf.
Everything was cut on a track saw or a miter saw and all angles cut are either 45 or 90.

Looks great! But is it a tad over-engineered? Not a ton of load on that thing. Wouldn't a french cleat design have provided a similar result?

Another awesome build. I just splurged and back a track saw too, so thanks on showing a cool build using that tool. Question - did you purchase the MDF and apply the veneer yourself? Or can you purchase them that way?

The track saw is on of my most used tools. There awesome to have. For the mdf it comes ready to go and most wood suppliers usually have different wood types and different thicknesses. If it’s available to you I would go with ply veneer over mdf. It’s a lot nicer to work with.

You don’t have to frame it in like I did, you could get away with screwing the frame through the drywall. Then you just have holes to fill. That said it definitely wouldn’t be able to hold as much weight

A very sturdy build. It upsets my eye though that the grain direction doesn't work for the ends. Needs to be endgrain. It conflicts. It would bother me every time i walk in the room.

The grain wraps around the whole shelf. It flows down from the top down the sides and down the front. The only place it doesn't meet up is from the front to sides. Its actually really satisfying to look at.

I wish I could find a local source for white oak veneered sheets.. love the look of it, hate the price for solid boards. Did you buy your MDF sheet online or local?

Locally kinda. They don't stock out where I live so I have about an hour drive to a Windsor plywood that stock it. You may get lucky asking some cabinet shapes to order you a couple of sheets in. Ive done that in the past.

If it's a veneered wood, you'd have cover the exposed core made from your cut

absolutely beautiful work and exactly whatvi was looking for but for God sake please put an approved mask to cut MDF. Look into the health dangers of it and take safety precautions.

It turned out really nice, but I don't think it needed to be that strong unless a TV was going to be placed on it. Seems like an awful lot of work and risk otherwise.

Why go through so much to build such a sturdy shelf that doesn't hold anything? What will ever sit there that will need that degree of reinforcement? It's a neat build but I have floating shelves that are strong and weren't built that way.

But why is your house so empty? Surely you have no need for a shelf, floating or otherwise, if you have no things to put on it...not even the TV! Dont get me wrong, its rather impressive but I would have said "I made this plank of oak float under my TV" haha

Can put anything on it, a sound bar, media stuff, tons of stuff for a shelf under a TV.

@@joshn1678 agreed, it is the perfect spot for placing such things as a sound bar, also would be a prime spot for the homing of remote controls to stop them wandering aimlessly around the room and causing havoc behind cushions or under coffee tables. But my point was, there are no such items in evidence here, in fact there is a distint lack of any of the usual detritus that piles up unbidden in your average abode, not a sound bar, no dvds, not a scrap of media related items; nor are there any scatter cushions for rioting remotes to gather behind, no coffee tables for wallets, keys or phones to linger under, not a vase or a comedy mug, not a single quirky piece of objet d'art or collectable, not even a clock! This isnt a home its a show house and nobody with any shred of personality or identity lives within these walls, no matter how good they are at putting up shelves in such a manner ae to hide the brackets holding it to the wall!! I think they need to spend more time expressing themselves in some creative way and less time doing snazzy DIY. Life is just too short empty shelves, clutter it up a bit, minimalism is no way to relax and just enjoy whats on the tv...well, coz you know there is a really good documentary on about painting things magnolia. YAWN!!!
