Bullitt is a 1968 American dramatic thriller film directed by Peter Yates and produced by Philip D'Antoni. It stars Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn and Jacqueline Bisset.
The total time of the car chase scene is 10 minutes and 53 seconds, beginning in the Fisherman's Wharf area at Columbus and Chestnut, followed by Midtown shooting on Hyde and Laguna Streets, with shots of Coit Tower and locations around and on Filbert and University Streets. The scene ends outside the city at the Guadalupe Canyon Parkway in Brisbane.
Two 1968 390 V8 Ford Mustang GT fastbacks (325 hp) with four-speed manual transmissions were used for the chase scene, both loaned by the Ford Motor Company to Warner Bros. as part of a promotional agreement. The Mustangs' engines, brakes and suspensions were heavily modified for the chase by veteran car racer Max Balchowsky. Ford also originally loaned two Galaxie sedans for the chase scenes, but the producers found the cars too heavy for the jumps over the hills of San Francisco. They were replaced with two 1968 375 hp 440 Magnum V8-powered Dodge Chargers. The engines in both Chargers were left largely unmodified, but the suspensions were mildly upgraded to cope with the demands of the stunt work.[citation needed]
The director called for maximum speeds of about 75--80 miles per hour (121--130 km/h), but the cars (including the chase cars filming) at times reached speeds of over 110 miles per hour (180 km/h). Driver's point-of-view shots were used to give the audience a participant's feel of the chase. Filming took three weeks, resulting in 9 minutes and 42 seconds of pursuit, first of Bullitt by the hitmen then the reverse. Because of multiple takes spliced into a single end product, heavy damage on the passenger side of Bullitt's car can be seen much earlier than the incident producing it and the Charger loses five wheel covers, with different ones missing in different shots. Shooting from multiple angles simultaneously and creating a montage from the footage to give the illusion of different streets also resulted in the speeding cars passing the same cars at several different times. At one point the Charger crashes into the camera in one scene and the damaged front fender is noticeable in later scenes. Local authorities did not allow the car chase to be filmed on the Golden Gate Bridge, but did permit it in Midtown locations including the Mission District, and on the outskirts of neighboring Brisbane.[citation needed]
McQueen, an accomplished driver, drove in the close-up scenes, while stunt coordinator Carey Loftin hired stuntman and motorcycle racer Bud Ekins and McQueen's usual stunt driver Loren Janes for the high-speed part of the chase and other dangerous stunts. Ekins, who doubled for McQueen in the The Great Escape sequence where McQueen's character jumps over a barbed wire fence on a motorcycle, also lays one down in front of a skidding truck during the Bullitt chase. The Mustang's interior rear view mirror goes up and down depending on who is driving; when the mirror is up McQueen is visible behind the wheel; when it is down Ekins is driving.
The black Dodge Charger was driven by veteran stunt driver Bill Hickman, who both played one of the hitmen and helped with the chase scene choreography. The other hitman was played by Paul Genge, who had ridden a Dodge off the road to his death in an episode of Perry Mason -- "The Case of the Sausalito Sunrise" two years earlier. In a magazine article many years later, one of drivers involved in the chase sequence remarked that the stock Dodge 440s were so much faster than the Mustang that the drivers had to keep backing off the accelerator to prevent the Dodge from easily pulling away from the Mustang.
One of the two Mustangs was scrapped after filming because of damage and liability concerns, while the other was sold to an employee of Warner Brothers.[14] The car changed hands several times, with McQueen at one point making an unsuccessful attempt to buy it in late 1977. The current state and location of the surviving Mustang is largely unknown, but it is rumored many times that the Mustang is kept in a barn in Ohio River Valley by an unknown owner.

Word has it the scene where the Mustang crashed into the ditch in Brisbane was unplanned. Peter Yates was in the backseat operating a camera and told McQueen "you can stop driving, we're out of film". McQueen responded, "that's OK, we're also out of brakes". He halted the Mustang by sliding it into the ditch, breaking the upper ball joint and disabling the car.He just missed hitting the camera men stationed there.

The reason for the initial success of "Bullitt"- and its continuing popularity - is the abundance of location filming, as opposed to the usual Hollywood fake sets that were still prevalent in movies then. A high-speed car chase on REAL streets, not to mention the thrilling shoot-out finale at the United Airlines baggage claim at SFO, made a huge impression on audiences when this movie was new. All this excitement makes you ignore the strange plot that you never really can figure out, or the inconsistencies and continuity glitches in the automobile chase.

Dude: The last scene at the end where you're snoring in bed with Jacqueline Bisset was so funny, I was crying and almost peed my pants. It puts a whole different spin on the final few frames, where McQueen goes into the bathroom to wash his hands and looks into the mirror. A great ending to a terrific piece of artwork. THANK YOU!!

I am from San Jose, CA (55 miles south of San Francisco). I remember hearing they were shooting this film. It came out while I was in the USAF at Vandenberg AFB, CA. It came to the base theater - I sat thru it 3X the first night it was shown. It was one of the most popular movies of that time period. I only got to meet Steve McQueen one time - but got 3 in-person autographs from him. Prior to meeting him I asking the lady working in the wardrobe department what kind of cigarettes he smoked. So when approaching him I pulled out a cartoon of cigs for him - he thought that was nice - and gladly signed. Steve McQueen was truly in a class by himself and was saddened to hear when he died at the age of only 50. The terms icon and superstar at thrown around too easily - but Steve was truly in a class all his own and was and still is an icon. RIP. Roger C.

I’m 62. Bullitt has and always will be my favorite all time movie. The chase scene was by far the best ever done. Then and know as far as I’m concern. Steve McQueen is BOSS. Always will be in my book. To this day I tell the younger generation about this movie and the car chase scene. I have a movie poster that was used to promote the movie in my room. I often wondered how much of the Scenery in the movie changed over the years during the car chase scene. Thank you for recreating the background chase scene. And he end scene with you in bed was totally hilarious. Kudos to you my brother.

Outstanding.. I like the overlay of music into the chase actually.. I built a Bullitt replica after years of research and discussions with one of the actual stunt drivers. It was a cosmetic total rebuild/clone externally but had a tremec 5 speed, 392 Ford Motorsports crate engine and subframe build, 3:50 Currie industries posi diff and Maier Racing custom internal roll bar that you had to look twice to see. I lived in SF and drove this route many times. Special movie and SF used to be a special place to live.. no more.. Bullitt stands as the coolest movie ever between the chase, the soundtrack which doesn't have a single bad song, all excellent, locations, scenery and McQueen, Bissett, Vaughn, Duvall, etc etc.. I also built a exact Charger duplicate which now resides in the Midwest. The Bullitt car still resides in SF Bay Area. Thanks for the work that went into this post!

Well done. If anyone who loves this movie also likes Eastwood, check out the scene late in Bullitt where he’s at the SFO airport waiting for the Pan Am 707 to return to the gate when you hear a flight announcement in a woman’s voice: “flight 577, Electra II flagship service for Washington may now be boarded through gate 5 ……… .” 5 years later in Magnum Force, Eastwood plays Dirty Harry, another SF homicide cop based on the same true life character as Bullitt. Early in that film Harry is also at the SFO airport walking through the terminal when you hear: “American Airlines flight 577, Electra II flagship service for Washington may now be boarded through gate 5 ……. .” Yes - both movies used the same archive recorded announcement. Small world.

That was an amazing frame by frame recreation of the original. From the looks of it, a lot has changed since 1968 and a lot hasn't. Noticed more stoplights and a bit more development, but it isn't like the rest of the country. This remake makes the locations today recognizable. Again, great job.

The reason you see the same dark green VW Beetle four times in the chase scene is because this particular segment, on this hill, was shot with four different cameras in four locations. The footage was then edited into different places in the chase to make it look like more than one place. Unfortunately, the Beetle is so distinctive that you notice it each time. When "Bullitt" was new, I really liked the appearance of this (new) Volkswagen color, and was very pleased to get a new Beetle in 1971 that was the same color. Unfortunately my Beetle came to its end upside-down on a freeway embankment in 1978 - not due to a car chase.

Excellent. Stayed in the Amsterdam Hostel on Taylor Street back in April this year and quickly realised where we were. My surname is Mason, we were just round the corner from Mason Street and then went to pick up a cheap Toyota Yaris to drive across USA to Boston in. When we got to the rental place on Bush Street the guy upsold us to a bright red 2013 Mustang and then dropped the one way fee!!. We ended up in the Mustang for $6.00 less than the Yaris would have been with the one way fee. What a way to travel across America. We were skint and camped all the way across America. It was early in the season and many of the state and national parks were not yet open for the season. All the same we camped in many of them and cleared off early in the morning. It all felt a bit like another of my fave' American films - Bonnie and Clyde. It all seemed destined to happen. A great way to finish our round the world trip. Well done Herve, excellent to see your Bullitt locations film and the one on Planet of the Apes, we toured through much of that area in the car. greetings from the UK

Kudos to Mr. Attia. He has done a phenomenal job of tracking down most all the camera locations & shots for this famous car chase scene. Continuity wise, Bullitt was always severely flawed. The same green VW Beetle gets passed multiple times, not just from different camera angles, but timeline continuity looping due to the chase editing. But, the pacing, music, editing & flow still puts Bullitt in the top of anyone's short list all-time best car chase scenes.

Excellent. I figured out the chase route years ago and followed on Google Maps but the split screen editing is brilliant. Its a yes from the U.K.

2:53 parklet installed exactly where he parked is pretty funny and a good metaphor for how The City has changed since then!

I really like Robert Vaughn, he was the best at being the asshole in whatever movie he played in. I meant what I said in all good faith, he was great at what he did.

+Bobby Tucker Robert Vaughn could be an a-hole with class and dignity. Not many could pull that off.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Fascinating to see the locations that it was filmed.

Very cool! I watched the video of the Bullit car being sold first and then stumbled onto this. You did a great job, that took a lot of research and film editing for sure. Now I'm gonna go watch the entire movie. 😁👍

I love it when McQueen looks at the fresh produce then goes and picks up the frozen meals 😂. Excellent side by side comparisons.

Herve, this was excellent. I love stuff like this. Right shots, right angles and the late model Mustang. One of my fav movies.

Though I have not been to SFO in many years this answers many of my questions in full detail. Thank you for this superb presentation, the editing and split screen effects are perfect. A film like Bullitt or even a remake could not be done today without the inconvenience of road construction going on everywhere, sheesh.🙄
