I think Joe West was just waiting for Bum to do or say anything else so he could toss him. He gave him like 17 seconds to make a dumb comment and Bum just stood there staring at him. Bum knew what West was doing, and he didn't take the bait.

+Matt Ajaj In this particular instance, I wouldn't call it instigating. Instigating is like when Gary Darling started an argument with Tom Glavine when Glavine didn't say anything to him. MadBum screamed fuck. West probably milked it a bit there at the end but he was making sure Bum was going to say any other obscenities. West is still a shitty umpire but in this situation, not so much.

Matt Ajaj joe west as been around since the early 70s, back when players weren't such little cry babies millionaire and there was respect for the game and for people making the game possible. To put context onto this: Joe West, like it or not, is notoriously accurate behind the plate. In a postseason game, out of 160 pitches he called 159 correct. That one pitch called wrong? Well that’s where the other half of notoriety comes in. He’s well known for purposefully incorrectly calling a pitch or two just to show the pitcher (and team) who’s in charge and to test him. He’s been on MLB payroll longer than most of the youngsters in the game today have even been alive, seen more games than some stadiums have even hosted, President of the world umpires Association (union that negotiates with MLB) and will soon be the longest serving umpire with the most games in the entire history of baseball. You’re not gonna get away with throwing a quick millionaire player tantrum on the mound without a reaction from Joe. He’s definitely not as fit as he used to be, but he’s certainly deserving of respect for the sheer amount of time he’s been there.

Most people seem to know what an umpire experiences. Go umpire some highschool and little league games, deal with the kids and their parents. Go see what a fun and easy experience that is. People complaining about job they have never done or have little desire to do, yet they know all the nuances of the trade. Fascinating.

+Look Bropez I agree. And that's what bugs me about game officials (not just in baseball, but all pro sports) But in baseball, home plate umpires,. really think they're something. I think the reason why players, and fans get pissed off with umpires is because of the inconsistencies (again, that goes for all pro sports though) in their decisions and calls and perceived favouritisms, real or not

+Sean Kivlighn Those are all fair points, but I disagree with your premise about this particular situation. West makes the whole thing about himself by stepping around Posey and staring him down. If West wanted to toss him, he should've tossed him. I won't disagree about Bumgarner showing him up. I generally dislike Bumgarner since he's one of those "unwritten rules" jerks. But people come to the ballpark to watch him and the other players, NOT the umpires. Joe West insists on making himself the star attraction. Again, you make good points, it's all really subjective. No right or wrong answer.

Everyone. Rewind a few times and watch an individual fan. I rewound it at MadBums outburst around 20x's and I noticed, a very small amount of people are actually viewing the throw. LOL! Distractions are everywhere in the stadium.
