The "survive 500 days" achievement is in the books and we've secured all but one feat, so now it's time to fire up a new character and send her to explore the Zone of Contamination, the latest zone to be added to The Long Dark. This isn't meant to be a long run, but it will definitely be educational.
So things have changed since the last time I played The Long Dark. Hinterland went and changed the way the Tales work, allowing players to complete Buried Echoes as long as they've completed the first Tale (Signal Void) on another save. With that in mind, our exploration run pivots to tackling Buried Echoes. First thing's first, we need to fix the transmitter in Forsaken Airfield (33:30) so our handheld shortwave device will work. This trigger a scripted aurora that lasts long enough for us to hustle back to the Zone of Contamination and find the first piece of the puzzle (1:06:45). The next step is finding the chopper crash -- which we do easily -- but there's an element that requires an aurora or glimmer fog to activate, so we have to wait a while before finishing that step (2:41:15). From there, it's off to the Concentrator and the Headframe Building, but a locked gate (3:03:45) sends us down into the mines to unlock the way forward.
Navigating toxic gas and a deluge of flares gets Astrid to the needed key (3:47:25) and a date with a previously unexplored part of the map (4:09:45). We then get a glimpse into Rudiger's plans when Astrid finds his ... contraption (4:23:30), which induces a plot-convenient fainting spell straight out of a Lovecraft story. A suitably gruesome discovery in the next room closes the book on our time underground, but there's still one task left to be done. We lay the remains of the security chief to rest (5:24:20) at her favorite spot and secure yet another badge. The stream finishes with a trip through the cave connecting the ZOC and the airfield, a cave that is far easier to get lost in than is typical in TLD. It's still not clear how Rudiger, his device, or his grand vision will play into Episode 5 and the final Tale, but I am definitely eager to see how Hinterland ties all these threads together. The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster.
