Bus to Gorey Pier - Hike to La Rocque (Part 1)

‪@thereluctantoutdoorsman‬ Today Paddy and I try something new by taking the bus to Gorey, rather than driving. Now we don't need to re-trace our steps after reaching our destination! In today's walk (Part 1 of 3) we head South from Gorey Pier down the East coast of Jersey, Channel Islands. We walk along the sea wall and then drop down onto Grouville Bay before heading up onto Royal Jersey Golf Course and along the fourth and third holes (where this video ends). In Parts 2 and 3 we continue Southwards all the way to Jersey's Southern-most point at La Rocque, without once setting foot on a road!

So awesome that you are able to take Paddy on the bus!! Now that is one brilliant of a walk for sure. Always enjoy seeing what an area looks like a low tide...cool! Free bus pass for seniors is a marvelous idea!! Getting out and keeping active without having to drive is a bonus!! Very enjoyable!!

Thanks Bruce, I've hardly ever used the bus before this video, but it is a great way for getting about on our island without having to make long return walks back to the car! I hope Otis is good! 🐕🦴😁👍🏻

Thanks Dez, Paddy and I will be heading in a clockwise direction around the island over the next few weeks and by using the bus to get to our starting points we will be making much faster progress......in fact, we've just got the West coast to film, already having crossed the South (videos to come)! 🐕🚶🏻👍🏻

Hello John, I think the pub may now be called the Bass and Lobster (good food!) but I can't remember what it used to be called! Maybe if I got hit on the head with a golf ball it may sort out my memory! Mmmh........probably not a good idea though! 😁😁😁😁 Enjoy your weekend! 👍🏻

Hi Tom and Paddy, thanks for another great video. Congratulations on getting your bus pass, both the buses and their drivers in Jersey are brilliant, I love using them. This year I renewed my visitors Avanchi card which I am informed is valid for 15 years, probably longer than me😂. Just think of the money you will save on petrol!! Although I know absolutely nothing about golf, it is lovely to see the course and its stunning location. Looking forward to the coming videos and to being in Jersey again in 10 days time. Have a great week, looks like Summer may have finally come!!

Hi Valerie, I didn't know they did an Avanchi card valid for so long! I don't know what it cost you but it seems like a great idea! I was a bit of a bus snob.....but no more......I'm converted! So you're back again and the weather is looking better......should be good! 🌞🌞🌞

I paid £25.00 for a weeks unlimited travel, which I made good use of!! I go to the bus station when I arrive and top up my card for however many days I want. It works out much cheaper (depending how much you use it), and saves needing change for the bus or having to use your debit card. If your senior pass works like the mainland they will automatically renew it after 5 years.

Hi Tom Myself and my good wife will be on the island in a few weeks for our annual holiday and I’m down to play les Ormes and was thinking about playing royal jersey but after seeing that rough I’m thinking n two minds now 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hi Benny, it is brutal, but better than it was two or three weeks ago, as it has been drying out and burning off a bit! Before it was so thick, lush and green that even if you had a good line on your ball you were unlikely to find it........even when just a few feet off the fairway! 😞🤬😡

Ah the Drive in Barbecue! Many years ago we had to convince our daughter that we could use the Drive in Barbecue beacause we didnt have a car! BTW The rough at my course is just the same. Two days of sun and the run on the ball takes it wide and >>> lost ball. Many unhappy members.

Hi Tom, video at 10.15min of the apartments are where the old Beach Hotel was, absolutely the same location. Great seeing what’s there now, they’ll have amazing views ❤️

Bus travel is a great idea, Tom😊. My husband is a keen golfer and he is wondering why the club has let the rough run wild like that? Beautiful location for a course though I have to say😊

Hi Sheila.......they like to leave the rough to get thick for an annual scratch competition they have in June, but were reluctant to admit this. They stated cutting it back early would cause it to be thicker next year and also cited issues with machinery after a fire destroyed a lot a year ago! We are lucky though.......there are some amazing views on the course! 👍🏻

I really do think that your committee needs to have a talk with the green keepers about the rough. I would think a good majority of the members do not hit the ball that straight on tight fairways and for me this would spoil the enjoyment. When I come over next year if it’s that bad I’ll leave the Pro V 1s at home and not give them to the course. I’ve been to the drive inn a couple of times in the past and remember it was good value for money in its day. What a good idea to take the bus rather than walk back now that you have the bus Pass good thinking Tom. Tell me a dog that doesn’t like the beech.

Hi Nic, yes it has not been any fun for months now although the rough has started to dry out over the past couple of weeks, making it at least a bit easier to find balls! Having said that, I played in a competition the Saturday before last, in very windy competitions......shot a net 75 and unbelievably came fourth! I think net 72 won it! I have never before in my 50 years as a member seen an over par score win a competition! I'm actually loving the bus! 😁 I hope you and your better half are well and enjoying the good life! 👍🏻

That’s amazing Tom, as you would think In really bad conditions that over par would be good enough to win. All the best to you and the family and keep finding those golf balls as they are not cheap depending on what you use.
