Retired for two years, my wife suggested that I was becoming one with the sofa and should get out of the house and do something! As a result I have started to venture out on the Channel Island of Jersey with my cockapoo pal Paddy G.
Very interesting, Tom as although we have walked round Havre De Pas many times we have never walked past the industrial site. We always take that path on the right that you mentioned, just after the cafe 😊. Think we will explore that way when we return for our second visit in October!
😮 wow Tom and Paddy 🐕🥩🦴 g hotels coming down apartments going up in there places ! The industrial part of jersey very uninviting but you do need these kind of places it's a wonder they haven't put apartments in the chimney stack Tom lol 🤔 I hope I haven't given them something to think about 😲 yes my friend you must have covered 3miles you and wonderful K9 deserve a 🍺 well done ✅ well boys c u on Wednesday all the best John 😊😊😊
😁😁😁It's a strange Chimney huh? Can't think what it's for.......but a tower block for very tiny people seems like a good idea John! 😁😁😁 CU Wednesday my friend! 👍🏻
You certainly have had great weather since leaving Gorey for your videos but did you say they were filmed on different days. It’s all changed in Harve des Pas since I lived on the Island. Most of the hotels are now apartments and I have wondered how many hotels and guesthouses have been lost to the developers over the past thirty years. I have a question Tom someone asked me at golf the other day how many years is it now to get your residential qualifications ?. I’ve always thought those four tower blocks in St Clements spoil the landscape. When coming back from a trip to France you could always see them from miles away. Cheers Tom And lovely Paddy
Hi Nic, I filmed the walks from Gorey pier all the way to the Grand Hotel on the same day! The weather got better and better as we progressed! As far as residential qualifications go - you now have to live in Jersey continuously for 10 years and gain Entitled status to access the full property market, unless you are getting in on the high net worth or high value activity business route! I couldn't agree with you more about those flats! Cheers Nic!
Thanks for the info Tom, back to 10 years. I just miss out when I arrived in 1981 by a few moths as it was up to 20 years from 10. I married a local so that was that. You must be as fit as a butcher’s dog along with Paddy. Cheers
Yet another good video tom showing us all parts of this magnificent island, its sad to see the decline in hotels and yet the new architecture that replaces them are sympathetic and complimentary. Reference the lintel fixed into the rock looked like a german bunker or machine gun nest.? Im watching this on the 7th of July and will be on the ferry with my bigger car😮 on the 10th of July at Weymouth for our annual fix of jersey . In the meantime we will be watching your videos until then ,many thanks for posting this on utube
Hi Brian, thanks so much for commenting as usual and you may well be correct about the structure being German. So glad that you are coming back to Jersey soon......I hope the weather perks up a bit for you! 🚗☀️😎👍🏻
you need to take the wife to Specsavers if she thinks Iceland is expensive compared to M&S. I just did my weekly shop there for less than £70. that includes a cheese cake, tub of ice-cream, 2 x 2Lt of fizzy pop and a couple of tubes of Pringles. where as you bought 1 meal from M&S (Pizza) and a few bits and it cost you over £50. you really need to do a like for like of home brands from the 3 supermarkets to see the real difference.
Hi Jean, I thought I was done with the cost of living videos, but I do like your suggestion of doing a like for like from the three supermarkets - so may well do one more! Cheese cake, ice cream and fizzy pop........sounds like you are a man after my own heart! 😁😁😁😁
Another great walk Tom & Paddy so much so that when we return for our holiday we will walk from St Clement to St Helier. How long did it take you? Lovely to hear your family story and your comment on scaffolding made me laugh. When we were in St Helier in May I couldn't believe how much scaffolding was about . Who knew there was much of it on just one island lol
Hi Donnamay, walking from the end of St. Clement near Green Island all the way around to the Grand Hotel took about an hour. It does make you wonder where all that scaffolding comes from huh!
Travelled a long way from down under to experience first hand these beautiful walks around Jersey. I’m keeping a look out for you Tom and Paddy. It has been way too cool of late.
Hi Rae, yes the weather has been pretty poor of late so Paddy and I have not been out as much as usual! I fear that we are not going to have a proper summer this year...........I think our poor old planet is beginning to fall apart! Having said that, if you do see us be sure to give us a shout! 👍🏻
Great walk again, Tom! We enjoy listening to your stories from yesteryear😊. How traumatic for your grandfather and his wife. What a lovely house they had.
😮 wow Tom and Paddy 🐕🥩🦴 g I'm enjoying my 🍵 brew and a walk in paradise ✅ I'll have to get my hard hat out of retirement Tom and do a bit of scaffolding lol 🤔 I wouldn't like to see the insurance bill after the terrible storm that hit thousands of people in jersey! You did well not heading for the second pub on your travels 🍺 m8 well all the best c u 2 Mora my friends all the best John 😊😊😊
I remember the bird cadge bar and been in it a few times. If my memory serves me right it was done out in tartan and loved the story of the guy who spent time in the bar before he went off to Hong Kong, small world. I remember there was so much entertainment on offer in Jersey in the eighties and nineties when I was living in Jersey. Swansons, De Normandie to name a couple in town. Along the five mile road the water splash and the Chateau and not forgetting Cesar’s palace in which was a good show. Many of the hotels had entertainment for the guests and yes it was a good time for shows in those two decades. Our friends suffered storm damage to a very high fence between the and next door it’s costing them 34 thousand to repair as a small digger has to dig deep for the foundation before anything else can be done. The good news is the insurance is footing the bill. I hope you played well in your match play and were victorious. Cheers
I'm sure that you are right about the tartan Nic! If I remember correctly there were two bars.......the birdcage ran along the street and then there was another one a bit further back. All so long ago now and I was just a nipper! Wow! 34K to replace a fence........it just doesn't seem possible does it.........just like the scaffolding! Just before she passed away my Mum lived at Links Court (near Royal Jersey) and they were painting the blocks. The cost was unbelievable! The less said about my golf this morning the better! It was very, very windy but the guy who beat me 4 and 2 didn't seem to notice! 😁😁😁
HIya Tom and your navigational aid Paddy 👍 some lovely weather Jersey is having certainly better than the strange weather in England 🤔🤔.Already looked at part 1 liked but not commented and looking forward to the next .once you have completed the walks around the island your next series could be walks to pubs around Jersey 😁.
You were a bit adventurous with this walk Tom and I hope you had your good walking boots on with all those rocks. You see the coastline from a different perspective from the beech and seeing more lovely houses. The birds sounded like starling’s Tom, we have a local starling that sits on the electrical wire and mimics other birds and laughs like a lady really funny to listen too. I liked the story of the big guy that must have been 😄. I have been quite a few times to green Island restaurant in the past and the food was always good, is it still going or is it something else now. Played golf yesterday with my society and we must all been mad as it was 32c. I will only play in the mornings early for the next few weeks until the hot spell is over, but it didn’t stop a couple of bandits scoring big. You not going to believe it but 50 points won playing off 23 handicap and second, third and Forth place scored 44, 43, and 42 points and the handicap secretary is cutting them big time. I scored 38 points playing off eight so no chance. Look forward to the next one cheers.
Hi Nic, if you think this walk is adventurous wait until you see the one from St. Aubin to Belcroute that will be coming up in a few weeks! 😁😁😁 I love the sound of your starling.......I used to have loads of bird feeders out the back of our house, but had to get rid of them because they were encouraging rats! It is such a shame as we had so many birds visiting and I used to love watching them! The restaurant at Green Island is still going strong although I haven't been there for years! 50 points! !4 shots better than his handicap........what is that all about? We seem to hardly ever have Stablefords nowadays, but if anyone gets 36 points they are in with a good chance and that is with everyone's handicaps having gone up two or three shots over the past couple of years, since the introduction of the World Handicap System! I saw a video on RU-vid the other day about slow play and they were saying that the problem on a lot of English courses at the moment is that the rough is so tough that 90% of the members can't cope with it, so every group are looking for golf balls, almost every hole. My handicap is up to 16.3 which is unbelievably in the top 40% for England! Well done on shooting 38 points off of 8......that is good golf! I have a matchplay knockout tomorrow which will be fun! Cheers Nic.....👍🏻
I love match play just you and the other guy, play well. The guy who scored 50 points has been cut to 18 from 23 personally I would have cut him another two. Looking forward to the next video.
Hi Tom and Paddy, great to see this part of the coast which I normally only pass on the bus. I arrived in Jersey this Wednesday evening for 2 weeks. The island was invisible in the fog as our pilot contemplated whether we would be able to land, and said we may have to hold over the airport for a while😮 Happily, it seems eventually he could see more from his window than we could and we made a reasonable landing. As I am this side of the island I should explore these beaches. I have given a plug for your channel at the hotel, so hopefully you may have some new subscribers. The receptionist was particularly interested and wrote it down. Thanks for another great video. I'll look out for you on the bus😂😂
Hi Valerie, so glad you made it in safely with the fog.....I have memories of being fogbound at Jersey airport all day in the 1970s trying to get back to school in Sussex! It is a bit scary landing in that isn't it? Thanks also for mentioning the channel at the hotel.......every bit of publicity helps! 😁 I hope that the weather improves for you.........it is looking pretty grim as I type this! It looks like Paddy and I might have to settle for just heading around the block this morning! 🐕🚶🏻♂️
Wow you are setting off on another long trek! 👍. Had to laugh at the trousers story as I once worked with a gentleman who permanently had his posterior hanging out! I bet you could report it nowadays!😂
😮 wow 😲 how much was the damage for the 🍺 ! Looks like you and Paddy g 🐕🥩🦴 have been walking on the moon on this beach 🏖️ I've always bypassed this part of jersey can't wait to see the outdoor swimming pool at harve de par near the hotel Normandy 👍 that's were you had an accident when you were very young Tom 🤔 well boys thanks again for our wonderful walk and 🎥 c u soon all the best John 😊😊😊
Ha ha John...........you have the memory of an elephant my friend.......you don't forget anything! 😁😁😁Unfortunately I can't even remember the cost of the pint......Angie has told me off about that, saying that I should be letting people know the cost of beers etc. as people are interested in that sort of thing.......so, in future, when I buy a pint (which is likely to be on most walks from now on) I will try to remember prices! I do walk past the bathing pool (I think in the next part!). Thanks....as always John! 👍🏻
One pint tom and you are asking yourself is this a good idea ,just imagine what two pints might have done 😂 walking on water maybe 😅 , on a serious note you are showing the world parts of this paradise island has to offer that the average holidaymakers do not see. Many thanks tom for your efforts ,last year we discovered green island, as we stayed yet again at the ambassador hotel. Many thanks tom and your companion paddy
Another great video. We completed this lovely walk in glorious weather in early June. I agree, the views are glorious. Like yourself, we were confused about how to make the final descent, but thankfully, my wife spotted the hidden trail before I had wandered too far off in the wrong direction! Cheers. Phil.
Finished this lovely walk with a refreshing pint Tom well deserved 👍👍not long now until King Charlie comes to give you the freedom of Jersey for your outstanding work for making people smile and bringing back so many memories of times on this beautiful island.👍👍
Lovely walk on the beach today Tom & paddy G, you must be as fit as a fiddle by now with all the walking, & yes you deserve that pint or 2??, you know what it's like once you get a taste lol.
Hi Michael, thank you so much! I know Paddy always looks like he is thirsty, but he will honestly drink a bowl of water, refuse any more and then try and drink sea water at the first opportunity! He is a funny little chap! 😁
Hiya Tom another part of Jersey that has eluded me in the past but what a lovely walk and those houses Wow👍👍heading towards La Hocq inn for a beer are we ?🍺🍺🍺the next part will be interesting if you do 😄.All booked up for a short break in 3 weeks 👍👍
😮 wow I've never been in the Inn le hocque who brews the bitter Tom is it Randells? Well done ✅ to Paddy 🐕🥩🦴 g for finding watering hole lol🍺 🏖️ ps how far from you both is the ambassador? Well its been a lovely weekend walking with you again thanks for the 🎥 Tom your top Man and Paddy 🐕🥩🦴 g God bless you all all the best John 😊😊😊
Hi John, it is Liberation Brewing Co. (originally known as Ann Street Brewery and renamed in 2008) that brews the beer. I'm surprised that you haven't had a pint in the Le Hocq. We sometimes used to drink there after playing football at the FB Fields back in the late 1970s! The Ambassador is along the road towards town, just after Green Island - it is still open! Cheers! 👍🏻
Just watched this one, Tom, that really was a well deserved pint! I hope Paddy had a wee drink too! Le Hocque Inn looks nice, we have only ever travelled past it😊
As you can see the tide does go out along way. You probably know Tom that the Island is made up of 45 square miles and when the tide goes out it becomes 65 square miles. The spring tide is one of the highest in the world. I remember walking along commercial buildings and seeing boats nearly to the top of the harbor wall. Thanks for walking along the beach as the shoreline looks great with all those lovely houses costing no doubt a small fortune and it’s not as easy walking on sand as walking on the path. When we lived in Grouville my wife would say let’s go to Le Hocq pub as I don’t want to cook tonight. I would have the very big Yorkshire pudding filled with steak in gravy and veg, makes my mouth water thinking about it and washed down with I’m still glad to see local bitter. Enjoy the bus back with Paddy.
Hi Nic, it is always great to hear your memories of your time in Jersey! I could almost see and smell the Yorkshire pudding filled with steak and gravy.........one of my favourites before I gave up meat a few years ago! The Liberation best bitter was lovely.......I'll definitely be having a few more of those in the weeks to come! 😁🍺
@@thereluctantoutdoorsman Hi Tom a question is it still Mary Ann bitter with the name changed. I used to love Mary Ann bitter when I first arrived in Jersey and probaby drunk that more than any other bitter. Cheers Tom
Good question Nic but the answer is........I'm not sure! I don't know if they have changed the recipe over the past few years.......I suspect they have but their website seems to suggest otherwise! "Having been produced in the Channel Islands for over 130 years under various names, the beer is a traditional ingredient in Island life. Brewed using a blend of the finest Maris Otter and Chocolate malts, this dark bitter ale has a pronounced chocolate character. The well-rounded bitterness is perfectly balanced by a floral aroma derived from English Fuggles and goldings hops and drinks fuller than its ABV would suggest." I have to say it tasted good though and I'll be drinking more in the future! 👍🏻
Thanks for the information Tom, I will have to have a few pints to see if the taste is what I remember. We are coming over next May, probably at the end of the month and looking forward to our game at the Royal. We will have to have a four ball myself and my friend whom is also a member of the Royal against you and your partner, should be fun. Cheers
Hi Bruce, Paddy is loving life! I have just finished editing a video that won't be on the channel until 20/07/24 but in it Paddy has the best time scrambling over the rocks at high tide! It is a rare thing for me to be laughing like a crazy man whilst I am editing! 😁😁😁
😮 wow Tom and paddy 🐕🥩🦴 g you both got sand and gravel in your boots on this leg of the journey boys lol👍 you have learned me the most southern part of Jersey I thought it was gorey 🏖️ I hope you walk through the tunnel going to town if you look on the left Tom you will see the gabions holding back the land ✅ well I've enjoyed my ☕ and a wonderful walk with you guys thanks for the 📹 M8 c u 2 Mora all the best John 😊😊😊
Hi John, no tunnel I'm afraid.......but maybe I'll go through it in the future! I have seen the gabions though! 👍🏻Have a great weekend my friend! Keep your fingers crossed for England tomorrow!!!! ⚽
would it be worth you buying yourself a Tide Timetable? as it can be easy to get trapped by the tides between slips up to the road in places around the coast. people tend to forget that we have the third fastest tidal movements in the world.
I know you are right Jean and I should also get another bus timetable after I managed to soak my first one in water! 😁 Until then, we will just have to wing it.......but I have to say that I think you have pulled a bit of a Nostadamus prophecy out of the hat there.........try and watch Paddy and I trying to get around the coast from St. Aubin to Belcroute at high tide when the video comes out on 20/07/24!!!!!! 😮😮😮🤔
I can see that you and Paddy have a special bond Tom, and I would go as far to say you love him to bits. There is something about a beech for dogs and it must be the feeling of sand between their feet as well as the freedom to run. With the sound from the gravel on the beech it could Baron de Rullecourt and his troops making their way along the beech ha ha.
Hi Nic, yes you are right mate.......I really love Paddy, he is a special little fellah and we have spent quite a lot of time together over the past couple of years! I'm afraid the Baron's trip to the beach didn't turn out to well for him, but Paddy certainly enjoyed it! 😁
Hi Tom 😊At last managed to find time to enjoy the final part and enjoyed the scenery which on this day was and as always a delight. The bus pass is going to be a saviour as possibly no more walking back to the start saving those legs for future walks.😀I understand that the Jersey Eastern Railway ran from Gorey along part of the sea wall which you walked in Part 1 then went inland ,nice commentary when around the golf course as for me never boring when it comes to golf 👍👍 still on for returning back to Jersey most probably week commencing 22nd July as I want to avoid Charlie and Camilla😄Question the War Tunnels are for sale so would it be a good thing for the Jersey Gov.to buy and make it public ? You must have been thirsty as at the pier was it you or Paddy slurping you drink 😁Great work Tom with a special mention to Paddy .
Hi Lloyd, thanks for the information......I know I should know the route of the Eastern Railway but admit I am only aware of some of it. I was surprised when I heard the War Tunnels were up for sale because I was always under the impression that they were publicly owned! 🤔It was definitely me slurping........Paddy has much better manners! Looking forward to buying you a pint mate! 👍🏻
Just having lunch and watching the third part. I have walked out to the oyster beds a couple of times and one time we left it late to walk back. I didn’t know at the time that the tide comes in really fast and ended up running as fast as we could. If you can remember 25 years or more ago that two ladies got caught with the tide and had to ride their horses to the top of the tower and wait for the tide to go back out. It made international news at the time so beware. Played golf this morning and getting into the swing with my dear friends driver and five wood now, but wish he was using them himself and as that plaque said Tom I feel my friend is with me on the golf course. As always enjoyed the video with yourself and lovely Paddy
Hi Nic, I hope you enjoyed your lunch! I imagine it could get a bit scary if the tide starts coming in that fast and I saw they have an emergency tower half way back from Seymour that you can scramble up if you get in trouble! I didn't know the story of the ladies with the horses so thanks for that, very interesting! I have heard it said that you are never really gone if people still think about you, so you friend is still around when you are out there playing golf.......and what a lovely way to be remembered, out on a golf course where he would have enjoyed so many good times! 👍🏻
Hi Tom & paddy G, that was a lovely walk, never been there before, think paddy enjoyed the beach, is it may to September that dogs have to be on a lead?? Same as mainland UK.
😮 wow Tom and Paddy 🐕🥩🦴 g I have never been on this pier you have opened my eyes again Tom my friend 👍 Paddy 🐕🥩🦴 got his lovely drink along the way ✅ I always drove past green island on my travels around your beautiful island Tom thanks for the 🎥 and walk the weather over here in the 25s until Friday then thunderstorms for a couple of weeks lol 🤔 hope you have better on your walks m8 anyway all the best John 😊😊😊
Hi John, funnily enough it was the first time I've been on the end of it! Enjoy your good weather mate and then batten down the hatches on Friday! ⛈️⚡⛈️⚡Wow it was hot over here yesterday and today! Paddy and I did a lovely walk yesterday from St. Brelade to Corbiere. It was gorgeous out there and I'm not going to say it was too hot after all the bad weather we've had but🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞 !
Hi Tom n paddy thanks on behalf of all of us for this lovely walk around the coast ,in approx 2 016 we met a lovely lady who lived at Leroc Hazel Lake man she was deported with her family as a young girl to Germany. as her dad was not a true jersey man, Hazel has been mentioned in the jersey occupation memoirs. an amazing lady as they all were in that terrible era .thanks once again tom
never give money to the guy that is begging outside the old BHS. as he collects money from Social Security every week. I also doubt that he is an ex-serviceman too, as he would get help from the British Legion.
That is not the first time I've heard that! Oh, and it is funny, I will always think of that building as the old BHS......... with the old Woolworths just up the street!
I always tell grockles that coins fall out of cyclists pockets when they ride down French Lane. it is fun watching them get excited at finding a coin on the floor, only for them not to be able to pick it up. lol
😁😁 Jean, that's a bit naughty my dear! It has been a while since I heard anyone use the term grockle! It used to be common in the old days.......mind you, I suppose that there used to be a lot more holiday makers back then!
@@thereluctantoutdoorsman "my dear"? a local would say "my love". but then again ... I am male. Jean being the French spelling of John. although my last name is English, which could have confused you. lol
@@thereluctantoutdoorsman Hiya Tom I have yet to book anything due trying to get away next week to Cornwall to get some time away from the recent unforeseen circumstances. It will be either from July 15th to 18th or 22nd to 25th just 3 nights either times. As I already had many times in Jersey in the past I will be looking at spending 1 day on filming with drone.Hiring a car to get around for the days there and meeting up for drinks.
Some beautiful houses on that stretch, Tom😊. Imagine opening your back gate right on to the beach! Was that martello tower extended and made into a home? 😍
Hi Sheila nice huh! The tower is Grouville Bay No. 4 tower, bought by a Dr. Falla for £160 in 1905! It appears Dr. Falla developed the tower as a family home with extensions either side of it. It would be cool to see the inside of it, wouldn't it? 😮
