This is a video showing what the sunflower strips look like after they’ve been bush hogged. There are millions of seeds scattered in the ground for the birds now. They have really started to pile in over the last few days. I took a few short videos of the birds coming in to feed. I could not get all of them on video and there were so many I could not decide which birds to video. There are over 1000 birds using the field right now. If they keep showing up like this the next 2-1/2 weeks the opener will be awesome! I hope these birds stay and more show up, looking good so far.

Do you have a problem with those yellow and black birds(American Finch)eating the seeds from the standing sunflowers? I have them down here , but only see them when I plant sunflowers. I have been mowing them down so the dove can get to them better otherwise the finches eat them before the dove have a chance I have also seen them chasing the doves. Maybe I screwed up by cutting them down . I know the doves will land on , and eat sunflowers standing but just haven't witnessed it much . Another great video!!! I will definitely try leaving more standing on my late crop .I Have brown top still growing and we can top dress wheat without covering it up in Alabama . So , will have to rely on the planting of wheat for late season hunting this year.

I HATE goldfinches. There are hundred that get in my sunflowers every year. They don’t eat them all but they will put a hurting on them for sure. We can top sow wheat on plowed ground oct 1-oct 31 as well. I will do this where I bush hog the sunflowers. Once they’ve sprouted or rotted I’ll plow the bush hogged strips and top sow wheat.

Nice bro! I’ve got a small sunflower plot, about 2 acres, that I planted the first week of may here in central Ky. I planted Clearfield seeds and used spartan Charge as a pre emergent. They grew really good and I’ve got plenty of big heads full of seed. They are drooping and turning yellow. But, I’ve got a weed problem because I didn’t apply the Imox, nor did I leave any lanes to be able to drive the 4 wheeler down in order to spray them. I did perform 2 good burn downs prior to planting. I plowed and disc’d bare ground around the perimeter today. Should I spray everything with round up now? Sunflowers and weeds? This is my first attempt at a dove field and I’m just worried not having bare ground in the sunflower patch is gonna hurt me. Any advice would be appreciated. Thx

That’s what I would do. I would spray them now with a hot mix of roundup and if you have pigweeds or a lot of broadleafs mix in some 2-4d. I wouldn’t worry about running some over. If the weeds are too bad you will have to mow a good bit anyway. You can also cut, rake, and bale them to get clean ground. If you have access to some hay equipment this would be the best option.

Next year, add Prowl h20 to the Spartan for your pre emergent

What do you use to burn down the field after they have made? Also, how early do you burn the field down before season?
@longdoveclub549
@longdoveclub549 Год назад
I use a hot mix of roundup and 2-4d to burn the field down. I’ll start spraying them either the last week in July or first week in August. It depends on when they are fully mature.

When do you start killing / spraying your sunflowers before opener and do you just spray sections different times
@longdoveclub549
@longdoveclub549 Год назад
As soon as they are fully mature I will spray them to speed up the drying process as well as clean up any weeds. Typically, I start spraying late July or early August depending on planting dates. I do stagger my planting dates so I spray different sections of the field at different times as they mature.

Do you spray your sunflowers before you bushhog them? Also, what if I didn’t spray before I planted and the field is not clean, what should I do?
@longdoveclub549
@longdoveclub549 3 месяца назад
@@cliffhare8247 Yes, I spray a hot mix of roundup and 2-4D to dry them out and clean up any weeds if any, that come up in them after a pre-emergent and post emergent herbicide application. . Depends on what variety sunflowers you planted and the size of the weeds. Unfortunately, there are very few options for post emergent weed control in sunflowers.

Have you done or considered doing a video on your herbicide regimen? I am considering going with Clearfield sunflowers for the first time next year.
