2022 update: I had a second assessment, this time privately. Psychiatrist said I fit PDD-NOS but not Aspergers under DSM-IV and am below threshold for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for DSM-V (New Zealand uses both DSM-IV and DSM-V). ADHD ruled out as lack of childhood features. Psychiatrist said I am 'definitely on the autism spectrum' with 'clinicially signifcant autism spectrum features' yet below threshold for ASD. Apparently not everyone who meets criteria for PDD-NOS also meets criteria for ASD. This is despite scoring high on tests to support a diagnosis of ASD.
Bipolar affective disorder (type 1 with mania) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are still my main diagnoses.
This topic has been a sore point on social media. People have been quite aggressive about my diagnoses and that I no longer call myself autistic, after my first assessment with mental health services in New Zealand with a psychologist (public system).
My name is Xanthe Wyse and I have been sharing some of my experiences and insights mainly about mental health.
I find it quite interesting that several people with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis (ASD) or Asperger's Syndrome (or at least claim to) insist that I'm on the spectrum.
After much confusion with professionals, I finally had an assessment and my autistic-like traits (sensory issues, avoidance of eye contact, communication difficulties, stimming) have all been better explained by diagnoses of bipolar 1 disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder. PTSD is childhood presentation of mainly avoidance and shutdowns.
So I have traits but not enough to meet their criteria. Plus I was told that I wouldn't get an official diagnosis as an adult only (only rarely for 'severely impacted') and not a clear-cut diagnosis (more like a retrospective diagnosis as I was told before my assessment 'it's not good practice to diagnose autism in adults').
For years now, people on social media keep insisting I'm on the spectrum. I used to say I'm an Aspie after a psychologist and a pyschiatrist said that I have Asperger's and I'm gifted and mask but they wouldn't diagnose in writing as they didn't formally diagnose adults. So then I was confused when other mental health professionals said they could only see bipolar disorder, not autism. So it's been very confusing.
I was told that there would be no accommodations if they did assess me as being on the autistic spectrum (yet not officially - yes, confusing). And I think I forgot to mention it in this video but a diagnosis would likely prevent me from accessing treatment for PTSD (the bipolar diagnosis actually was a barrier for that but eventually I was approved therapy).
I will not be seeking a private evaluation as it's likely I will be told the same thing. Plus I was told it is seen as more of a 'quirk'. It was much more important for me to have my trauma validated so I can have treatment. I am about 6 months into a year's worth of therapy sessions with a clinical psychologist specialising in trauma.
There's a war in social media in the social media world - pro-self-dx vs official diagnosis only, advocates vs parents, ABA, autism as an identity, rejecting medical models, some rejecting disability. It's all very polarised and only a minority seek a balanced view - accepting someone and that also includes acknowledging struggles.
So who do I believe? Strangers on the internet who see overlap with their diagnosis of autism? Or professionals with 7 years training? Are people mis-diagnosed? Sure they are. I have been. That is a problem. But my current view is cautioning against self-diagnosis, although I appreciate there is a barrier for many people (cost etc).
My needing to move in repetitive ways (especially when I'm anxious and/or in an elevated mood with bipolar) can be called stimming or it can also be called psychomotor agitation. From what I gather, they are very similar.

Thank you for this video! I have ptsd, social anxiety, and what had been diagnosed as chronic depression, just get diagnosed as BP2 (I had suspected it for years but finally just got the diagnosis). I've also wondered if I'm also on the spectrum as I too have a lot of the same sensory issues you described but it totally makes sense to me now that they are probably just symptoms of the ptsd or BP2. I also saw you mention in the comments about ptsd being under acc and bipolar being under public mental health. I'm currently reviewing a decision from acc for back dated lope. My lawyer sent me to a psychologist for an assessment for the review and he's been able to explain how the bipolar, ptsd, social anxiety etc have always been present and how they have been caused by my childhood trauma. My review hearing is next month and I'm now pretty hopeful that they are going to have to over turn their decision. If you'd like the name of the psychologist, let me know and I can message you more about it maybe on fb or insta 😊❤️

ACC are a nightmare. I recently had a 3rd assessment with a doctor who used to work for them. He said sometimes they do cover bipolar but unfortunately PTSD only has been listed as my covered injury. I am waiting to hear back the decision. A psychiatrist last year said I am "definitely on the autism spectrum" yet he thinks overall just below threshold for Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD. I wrote about some of these experiences in my recently published memoir, "Bipolar Courage: Are You Sure You're Not Autistic?" (Xanthe Wyse) on Amazon. Unfortunately the laws protect ACC. A psychiatrist assessed well in my favour & ACC fought it. Went all the way to court. If a specialist does not challenge directly the original assessor, it will likely be dismissed as a difference of opinion between specialists or that that it's a snapshot in time & that's how the specialist saw things on the day. Welcome to message me on either Facebook or Instagram on my Bipolar Courage account. Curious how you get on with ACC.

Hi, again. Damn, this is another example of close-mindedness on both sides. ( Professionals not recognizing that adults can be on the autistic spectrum AND have bipolar. Even so, it seems the social stigma for either might've gotten in the way. When people were trying to "help" online, I wonder if that was partially motivated by stigma about bipolar. Advocates for both can actually work together. Agreed, "even experts can get it wrong", and so can individuals. What motivates that may be lingering fear of labels and being character-typed by them. ( *A diagnosis does not define character.)

Yes have experienced the frustration with the medical profession but also advocates pushing their narratives "autistic women are misdiagnosed bipolar" then encouraging to go off meds etc. I actually did. Spoiler: didn't go too well & I ended up back at the psychiatrist wearing my pajamas clutching a comfort object (either a soft toy or a soft blanket - vague on that). Severely sleep deprived & PTSD & bipolar both activated severely. As for the medical profession, the worst example is the psychiatrist whose report I am fighting in court. Judge has reserved his decision. It's very complicated and comes down to interpretation of the law. I uploaded a video about how he used autism feature traits against me as a reason to deny compensation (amongst other ridiculous reasons) for PTSD.

You are not wrong, honey. I send so much love to you. I know that you also know from inside that you are perfect. What I mean is that all these names, disorders and dysfunctions that label us and but us in boxes only leaves us feeling hindered and limited in the way we live and act in the world. Do not ever apologize for your self and the way you are but instead take pride in it. I am proud to be the way I am because no one has walked my shoes, no one knows how I feel and there for no one else has the right to define me. Ofcourse there will always be people who does it (I am one of them) but what I mean is that the decision is yours. If you choose to be free - you can be! There are reasons to why you feel, think and behave the way you do and that is your superpower. No one else have the same qualities as you - it is up to no one else but you to create the reality of the world you want to live in. You got everything you need within you and remember that it all starts inside of your head. Be thankful for it and the body you are given. Also, please don't reject this message. For I know I'm coming out as a random telling you what to do. But I feel you, as in: I feel myself. Me are you and we are free. Many blessings and loads of energy to you so that you keep up your good work. P.S. I also love your paintings! Think they would sell.

thanks. I don't make my diagnoses my identity. They are constructs that can be useful to some extent. I have sold some paintings as a hobby artist.

Bipolar 2 kiwi, think this kind first time I have heard some one speak about bipolar that matches my issues, had quite few including my own mum say I have autism stuff, but it not quite, never quite autism, it never quite fits the bill. My psychologist said to me not much value as an adult trying for diagnosis, your better to focus on main issue of bipolar (though this is my own situation obviously) as there is quite a lot of overlap so there not going to much value added by it. Kia kaha, really enjoying the channel look forward to hearing more content.

Nothing is done about adult autism in NZ anyway. I get told all the time by people by social media "experts" that I must be misdiagnosed & autistic instead. They get quite mad at me.

@@Upsidedownorangejuice the weirdest thing is that PTSD comes under ACC & bipolar comes under mental health services yet I experience them together. Some people are given a list of mental health diagnoses instead of PTSD.

I wonder whether you could find a therapist who is prepared to work with your struggles, rather than dealing with things according to a diagnosis. I'm only very new to working with bipolar + autism but I have seen that the way in which people are treated as children with ASD can result in PTSd and exacerbate bipolar. If a therapist is prepared to work with you as an individual with an idiosyncratic profile of difficulties and strengths, it can really help.

I am seeing a clinical psychologist weekly for PTSD. My main diagnoses are bipolar and PTSD. Then social anxiety disorder. I have tendencies towards ASD & ADHD but not enough for diagnosis. They give as few diagnoses as possible in New Zealand.

I got an autism assesment last year. The diagnosis was very ambiguous. It sucks feeling like an imposter when you feel something isn't being recognised. Like gaslighting and aggression for not having a valid peice of who you are
