In this video, I will teach you to swim butterfly fast and smoothly. By practicing butterfly swimming, after some time, you will literally fly over the water surface.
Firstly, I will explain how to perform the arm stroke in butterfly swimming. You will understand what does high elbow position mean and you will be able to perform it perfectly.
Then, you will learn to do correct kicks and at the exactly required for it time. So this will make your swimming easy and smooth.
Also, we will talk about breathing and arm recovery in the air. Breathing at the correct moment will allow you to feel comfortable in the water and enjoy swimming butterfly.
However, if you want to get to know to each technical elements in details, you need to watch Butterfly swimming lessons on my channel.

This is sure one of the best butterfly video on youtube. Its propably too much to ask...I have 11 year old daughter who competes in swimming, her favourite swim style is freestyle and butterfly. But when it comes to butterfly she always feels she can do better. He current time for 100m fly is 1.13. Would you be kind enough to have a look at her underwater footage and point out mistakes and make some suggestions how to fix them. She would really approciate your help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sOkmoTNyzBY.html

@stephanearthaud8308

What has been the most difficult to me ? Well, before internet, there was a lack of "good examples"... I mean, someone to follow and to imitate. And as you say, there are less people who even try, and still less who "dare to share their experience, and their tips"... so, one day I came to the swimming pool, and I saw a whole group of swimmers, swimming the butterfly with fins ! So I tried, and it is much easier to applicate all those "good advices" you share in this video. Then, I begun to feel the water ! The second point I find difficult is to breathe every two movements... I can do it for ten to fifteen strokes, but not more. After that, I have to breathe every stroke, which is much more energy spending ! Last, but not least, I focus much more on butterfly than before, which helps to develop "variations in techniques", as, for example, only one legs movement per arms movement. I'd like to give one important precision, about arms movement: when your arms reach the level of your shoulders, you have to do a pronation, so as your hand palms are parallel to the water ! And it much more than a detail: it is much, much easier and efficient ! So, it has to be said, and done !

The hardest part for me is the timing between kick and arm stroke. I tend instinctively to kick ad the beginning of the stroke instead of the end, and it's hard to find a way to change that

Best explanation from someone who really mastered fly❤ It’s crucial to focus on forward momentum when shoulders are out of the water and when head goes down, concentrate on hips not to sink which can be done only with arms fully stretched above the head - along the surface rather than sunk down

That's competition style butterfly perfectly. If you want to do open water long distance style, then use momentum and simply glide longer to conserve energy. In open water, you can also perform a double-dolphin quick-kick to get more leg drive. It all depends on your goals and application. It still requires all the good techniques being demonstrated.

How much time do you think one should practice the dolphin kick before moving to the arm stroke? I feel that the dolphin kick is the most energy consuming part of the butterfly stroke but also the one that gives you the most propulsion when doing the stroke. Non of the videos say how much time and attention should you give in practicing each part of the stroke when learning and when you can move on to learning the arm stroke. I feel that if you don’t practice enough the dolphin kick you can never have a good butterfly since your kick is week and can’t support the hole body movment when doing the stroke. Am I wrong? When do you think it is ok to move on to learning the arm stroke? When one can do 50m of dolphin kick without break? Wish you can give us information on how many laps of dolphin kick should we do per 1h sesion, slow motion videos on arm stroke and breathing. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

Most difficult in Butterfly is the rhythm of the whole stroke. Individually, one can be good at the arm strokes & dolphin kicks however they still don't work to complete the whole butterfly stroke. To stitch the whole stroke together ,finding the right rhythm for the dolphin kicks & the arm stroke is of utmost importance for a flawless butterfly...
@iket7396
@iket7396 5 лет назад
I feel that the hardest part was the key hole part. Because you must do it as soon as your hands enter the water. If you do it any later then you will go vertical and your stroke will be off.
@ithirstyforknowledge
@ithirstyforknowledge 3 часа назад
Butterfly is simple easy and natural just the instructors make it difficult by saying do this to breathe etc while the fact is when you pull the water, the arm position automatically pushes your head bit forward making a breath easy. Similarly, they keep saying the kick should be initiated by the hips or core . It's all incorrect. Of course the kick comes from the mid body how can you kick only by ankles? . It's as difficult as any other stroke in the beginning till you get a hang of it. The only thing truly challenging is because this stroke is mostly fully maneuvered by arms, lots of energy is used and heart rate gets high quickly.

Very interesting video. I was surprised when you said that the arms are so important in the butterfly. When I first started doing the butterfly my coach said focus first to the kick movement. Once I started showing good propulsion with my kick he told me then to start using my arms while doing the butterfly. Now the arm movements are important but as a beginner the kick was more important! Do you agree with it? Butterfly is an amazing stroke! I do not manage it well yet so I still practice a lot of kicking. Thank you for sharing!
@SwimUp
@SwimUp 5 лет назад
Yeah, I totally agree with it. But the most important in butterfly are body movements. I have made butterfly swimming lessons where I teach to do each technical elements of butterfly, starting from body movements, then learning to kick, performing the arm stroke and finally to breathe and do hand recovery. Thank you for your amazing comment!

The most difficult part is te timing. This video may help. I also liked the Australian coach for kin\ds, swimfast, as he had a clear progression of assimilation of skills. My problem is that i kick hard during the pull phase, end of keyhole, and cant seem to get a second kick in. I will try only drills this month. But I do think you were clear about the timing, which very few videos are.

Yes, the most difficult part, and the thing that I cannot find any video to address directly, is I have trouble getting my hands out of the water to swing them forward over the water. When I first start it seems like I'm doing okay, but very quickly, as I get tired, a wave starts to build up in front of me, and soon I completely failing to get my arms out of the water at all, and am actually dragging them forward UNDER the water. Getting the hands out of the water effortlessly in the recovery seems to be the biggest problem I have.

@ritwik5774
@ritwik5774 5 лет назад
use your mouth together with your nose to exhale out while underwater. If 1 stroke breathing is not enough time to exhale it all out, then breathe every 2 strokes. Also make sure while coming out to breathe you do not raise your head or your neck, your entire upper body starting from your shoulders should be above water and your head in a forward position instead of a high position, it should roughly be in line with your shoulders. Once you inhale thru your mouth start the undulation motion with your head facing downwards towards the pool floor.
@donpierce6281
@donpierce6281 5 лет назад
Try one arm fly AND let your chest drop as you have one arm extended and one arm doing the fly - with your body and breathing slightly to that side - do a whole length right then a whole length left. Later try 3 left 3 right breathing every stroke then do three strokes both arms holding the breath. The head DOES go further down than you are imagining. @SwimUp
@SwimUp 6 лет назад
I am not sure about other sources. To my mind, cycle in butterfly starts when arm stroke is started, thus, I call it "first kick" in the end of the stroke and the "second kick" when hands enter the water.
@trykozmaksym

Swimmate, so is it 1st or 2nd kick stronger? On the video it looks like the 1st is - makes sense as it helps to lift up the body.
@SwimUp
@SwimUp 5 лет назад
Maxtryk, the 2nd kick is stronger since amplitude is bigger. However, combination of the arm stroke and the 1st kick give a swimmer good speed.
@trykozmaksym
@trykozmaksym 5 лет назад
Swimmate, I beg to differ. It's noticeable here and in many other videos that knees are bent more during the arm stroke. Also the trace of bubbles is deeper.

The most difficult part is the head position when breathing. It is very hard to find the correct timing of heading out and going into the water.

Thank you for your comment! It is really hard. Actually, in my 4th Butterfly lesson I talk about breathing when to lift the head up and when to put it down. Check it out!

i found it's hard to lift the chin up during butterfly breathing, since it gives me discomfort in my neck... any suggestion for this ?

You have to keep the chin up. The more powerfully you do stroke the more above the water level you are going to get making breathing easier

Let the head be in wavelike motion. After entering, the head soon be lifted by waving as same moment EVF.

I actually don't know why but once I get the timing it uses slightly less effort than freestyle Like I don't feel tired as much as freestyle

Just for you to know that it is not a circle ⭕️ but is a 🔑 key shaped hole to unlock the door 🚪.

Most difficult is getting two kicks; I either kick at the beginning of the stroke or at the end but not both 🧐

Most probably you need to improve the technique, after that it will be much easier to swim
