They're called "pronouns", you use them to refer to people when you don't want to use their names. I used a couple right here! See if you can find THEM! (dropped a little hint for YOU at the end there, good luck!)
Most ppl use pronouns & there are often trans guests. Some people may "pass" in your mind but use pronouns you wouldn't expect, or use enby pronouns like "they/them". Think of it the same as a name. They want to inform us of what they'd like us to call them. That's not unreasonable.
