The rice fish are a nice choice. Extremely underrated fish. Here in Tokyo there are fish stores dedicated entirely to Japanese rice fish with some of the rarest breeds costing as much as 150 pounds per pair!

It isn't hard to determine what makes you happy... you are practically giddy when visiting the fish store. So much fun, I feel the same way when I am at a well kept store.

I came for the aquascaping but I stayed because of these delightful conversations with Matt. Love it!

Hey I’m in Japan and here rice fish are very very common, Japanese peoples tend to keep them outside in small pond or very small tank, they are very strong and are very resistant against anything. It’s usually recommended as first fish pet for kids, however they are gorgeous and very cute.

not sure you can get these in the UK. I rarely see them anywhere in the US. Years ago I had a few licorice gouramis. They were SO cute and tiny, but amazing. A female would set up a little station in a nook of some wood, and then the male would come by and flash incredible colors in front of her. If you're looking for rare small fish, those would be a winner.

MD going to Maidenhead Aquatics is always a fun time and this time did not disappoint.

The Oryzias latipes can very happily survive our winters outside. They happily cope with a complete freeze over on the surface of the water. I keep three different strains outside in tubs in the uk and they breed extremely well even over the winter months. There great fish to keep not the cheapest fish out there! They have been bred to look amazing from above in patio ponds rather than the side in the fish tanks but still very cool in tanks!

Those pink/purple tails on the rice fish look fantastic!

I'm quite partial to the "natural" Rice fish, that I saw while snorkeling a creek estuary in Thailand. Gold, with a yellow marging on the tail fin. Blue eyes, ofc.

Congrats on finally getting some Medaka Ricefish you’ll enjoy them a lot. Basic Care/Breeding them are also super easy their also more easy than guppies in my opinion. Medakas definitely taking over this hobby and I’m lovin it. 2022 is the year you’ll be seeing a bunch more new strains here in the U.S. If your ever looking for high end strains of Medaka I’m located in Hawaii 🤙🏽

Hi MD, love your channel! Just noticed at 16:27 that you introduced tank water at a huge amount unto shrimps without drip acclamation. I am always told to drip acclimate for 1-2 hours.

i love the display tanks at maidenhead. they have a huge tank with rays, geophagus altifrons, a bunch of flagtail prochilodus including one that is 18 inches, some severums, an adonis pleco, a large bristlenose and some algae. love it and the staff are so helpful too.

The bond you and Matt have is actually so amazing to see, the trust you bith have in each other with fishkeeping and so on is really good to see, I have a maidenhead aquatics near me and they're exactly the same with their fish with how matt is with the fish at his store, the fish are always so healthy and amazing to look at, really wish I had a studio like yours

I got a hand full of orange rice fish for my 30l tank a month ago. I am new to fish keeping and those are supposed to be very hardy, that'S why I picked them. in spring I want to put some in my garden pond. they're really cute.

I grew up in Tokyo close to one of the last pond that houses natural Medaka. They're found in rice paddies and slow flow stream that has plants thats similar to narrow jungle val.

rice fish is so underrated. its like the perfect fish for beginners

I had rice fish 40 years ago....they had blunter heads....looked like tiny white Dolphins......l had a 'shoal' of them in a 4x1x2ft tank with 'pump', river scape with a pair of Stone Loach and some minnows....live planted. I pinched river plants from the ltchen 😎 had live river critters too and regular top ups of mixed 'Daphnia' and live tubifex 😁

I love your video and your fishes. I'm an italian medaka breeder, and if i can give you an advice, medaka always lives better in outdoor ponds or tank, they grow bigger, healthier,and make a lot of Babies, and they show their best colours when seen form the top😊 The correct name of your medaka would probably be medaka white lamé (lamé identify the shining Scales on the back of the fish)

Hi dude! If you buy galaxy rasboras, put em into a medium size (80-150l) full planted tank with some cories/shrimps maybe and they will breed :D , if have enough plants they wont eat all the fry and u can feed the frys with smashed flake food.

I think it would be awesome if you did another black water tank but with green neon tetras, glow tetras, and laser corys.

I’ve had the white rice fish and the blue rice fish for over a year now and as long as you have floating plants with long roots on them they will breed like crazy and the babies are so small you can barely see them.

I will yell from the mountaintops for otocinclus in that cory tank. They'll coax out the pygmy corys in my experience.

on saturday i found some random mystery fish including a odd looking betta, a red and white goldfish, some crayfish and guppies and some mystery plants in my cichlid tank. the cichlids attacked the goldfish and i couldnt save it. luckily it was just a dream but now i want mystery fish to appear in my community tanks

Emerald Dwarf Rasbora, beautiful little fish, hard to come by. Once they settle in the colours are fantastic

My self sustaining eco system tank also has galaxy Rasboras, absolutely obsessed, very skiddish fish at first for me in a group of 10. Took over a year now to be comfortable with me walking through the room. Beautiful colour!

those "rili" shrimp actually are so cheap in Vietnam where u could find them about few cents/per pair lol, never seen them across the asian tho

I took the 1 1/2 hour drive to the Taunton Maidenhead at the weekend. Their hardscape selection was great. Had some fish also, including some apisto's i haven't seen before. Sadly MD and Matt weren't in that day lol. MD id highly recommend you visit the Farnham Maidenhead shop. Its my favorite one even though its 1 1/2 hours away. They have loads of tanks and some very uncommon and rare fish. Some iv never seen or heard of before.

I WISH I had an aquarium shop like this near me! You have no idea how much, lol. I have a box store pet place I buy my shrimp and fish from. No really great stores like this close to me at all. Smh. Exceptional shop! You are very lucky, MD, I'm in New England in the US, Massachusetts, I think most of the serious fish shops are closer to Boston, the city, not around here in my neck of the boonies.
