This video has been an amazing help! I just found this game in a thriftshop, together with the Catacombs and Heroes of Dungeonquest expansions. The previous owner put everything into one box, so everything was completely mixed up. Glad to say that the original game is 100% complete, and I am only missing 2 tokens for the other two. Also, it doesn't have the minis, but I can use something else for those. Thanks again!

This game is amazing. My love found this years ago at a thrift store and I've played hundreds of games with all kinds of friends ever since. It's very easy to pick up. Everybody is hesitant to try at first and after an hour they are screaming with devious glee for other player's demise or in agony for their own adventurer's death. There's also a German variant with a fantastic box art.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
It's great fun. You just have to play it as intended, knowing that you're going to die and really you're just playing to find out how. I've not seen the German art so I will look it up. I think the cover art of this edition is hilarious, as it suggests the heroes can in some way challenge the dragon rather than just running away with their hair on fire. Edit: Just looked up Drachen Hort. That cover art is also wonderful. I like the Drakborgen art for the ominous style, but it's probably my least favourite.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yeah I always had the hunch they had the GW DQ box art laying somewhere and just put it on. Because like you said there won't be much of a fight! A Smoldering pair of boots would have been a more accurate art. But this one still looks fantastic.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
I suppose it keeps it in line with the Talisman (second edition) box art. But yeah, a pair of charred boots and a black outline on the wall really tells a more accurate story. I'm really looking forward to running the dungeon with some of the expansion characters. Maybe they will fair better.

The chaos sorcerer and chaos warrior are my two favourites, I think. The elf with dragon is interesting, but perhaps a little bit too fiddly to use on any kind of regular basis. @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yup. Got lucky on it being the least important and easiest to replace bits. Downside since it has arrived, it comes time to consider the next tabletop purchases, so much temptation out there. Looking on the theme of cooperative and combative. A Kickstarter for the remake of the original Drakborgen. They sought to maintain the integrity of the original while also improving upon it with larger sizes and higher quality materials. Well, it seems their efforts have paid off, for you were thoroughly impressed by the results. Your enthusiasm for the game is palpable. As a fellow lover of the game, I must concur that the Swedish version carries a certain gravity.... a weight that gives it a distinct atmosphere by the darker elements. Thanks for this video. I have a copy I bought years ago but haven’t actually played it yet, and now I’m waiting for my daughters to be old enough. For some reason I got the urge over the weekend to dig it out and so will be going through the components to see if anything is missing. It’s good to know what you can get away with not having and which items are more essential. I also decided to buy the new Heroquest game and the 2 expansions this weekend. I must be getting nostalgic for my Games Workshop childhood days in the late 80s / early 90s. I hope they re-release Space Crusade in the near future too.

Thanks for watching, I hope you find the video helpful and you have a lot of fun with your daughter playing DungeonQuest in the future. It's such a great, simple design that has stood the test of time for me. I am sure you will both have a blast with HeroQuest, too. I'm not convinced about Space Crusade ever getting remade, although I would be happy to see it happen. As it never had a release in North America, it's not so well known there, and without a lot of nostalgia fueling sales in their largest market, I'm not sure Hasbro would consider it viable for a comeback. Also, it was tied much more into GW's IP than HeroQuest was and might feel quite distant from the original if it got a remake.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I’ve just been through the components and thankfully I have everything! I’ve noticed the floor tiles and dragon tokens are quite bent, I’m guessing from humidity and moisture. It’s quite annoying for the floor tiles as they won’t sit flat. I’ve added lots of silica gel pouches to everything and put everything in grip seal bags, do you know if that will sort them out or do I need to take action? I can’t imagine it’s easy when there are 115 floor tiles!

Not sure if you've ever watched any of my restoration videos for games like HeroQuest, but I cover straightening card components in those. My preferred method is to mist them with a fabric freshener like Febreze to make them more pliable, sandwich them between two sheets of greaseproof paper, and then press them with heavy books. I haven't tried it specifically on DungeonQuest tiles, so be cautious and consider a test on a single tile first to see how it goes.

The original dice are a black d12 with white numbers and the a white d6 with black pips. The d6 is one of the standard GW rounded corner little wargaming dice. These are shown on the back of the box. Heroes came with a d10. The very first copies actually had an old style d20 with 0-9 twice in white with black numbers. Later productions usually had a red d10 with white numbers. Catacombs also had a d10 - same as above. The box art actually shows an un-inked Gamescience d10 in lime green, which no GW game ever had. I have seen copies with green d12s just like the Advanced Heroquest dice.

That's a cool way to get a copy of this awesome game. Some of these older games are like print and play these days. Things like Advanced HeroQuest you can almost build from scratch with a good printer (actually worth doing with things like the super rare Terror in the Dark expansion which is just paper and card). And thanks to 3D printers and places like Etsy you can often get replacement miniatures too. I am a bit of a stickler for original bits, but it's fantastic that gamers have so many options these days. I'm glad you found a cool way to get this great game, and I hope you're having lots of fun dying horribly. Which expansion did you get? Catacombs or Heroes? "Where's all the money you stole from the dragon, Brave Hero?" "Uh... I put it somewhere safe. By the way, can you get the next round of drinks, I left my coin purse in me other trousers." The worst games of DungeonQuest for me are the ones where you're doing really well, but you suddenly realise you don't have enough turns left to make it to the dragon and back again, forcing you to turn around and head for home when you really wanted to press on a bit further. I would always rather go out in a (literal) blaze of glory than slink out with a bit of crypt loot.
@johnmiddleton4291
@johnmiddleton4291 3 года назад
The Heroes expansion is excellent. Many of the characters seem overpowered but much of that is limited use abilities. Some of their rules are rather complex, or maybe convoluted is a better term. The only thing that's annoying is the super tall rulebook that doesn't like to fit anywhere. I actually went through all my old GW bookcase games and tried the nubs of the edges of the cards and gently clipped the very corner tip of all the corners too. Makes them all handle so much more nicely. I think the major risk of damage is when shuffling them and you are mostly forced to do table shuffles with them to avoid damage. That can take forever with DQ. I always play the game solo with 4 heroes because it makes the decks cycle faster and is a much more exciting. I think the decks do need to cycle in order to really get the game to function well. The first version re-release that FFG did tried to expand on the rock paper scissors combat system to make it into and actual card combat system. It worked well, and certainly better than the old version, but i think they overlooked the fact that the vast majority of players quickly adopted the solo d12 combat system and never looked back. FFG fixed that fast with a set of download rules for dice combat. The big killer for the game was the Runewarsification of the characters and art. It's a marmite setting.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
I've seen the FFG combat system, and while it's pretty clever, I just feel it's completely wrong for DungeonQuest. What's the point in messing around with a combat system like that when you could fall in a pit on your next turn? I've never really thought of the Terrinoth setting as Marmite. At least Marmite tastes of something! I sort of forgot they had put the game in that setting. I wonder if that's why there hasn't been a new edition yet? I'm assuming someone would need to redo artwork to remove all the Terrinoth bits.
@johnmiddleton4291
@johnmiddleton4291 3 года назад
It was a cool combat system that came into it's own in Middle-Earth Quest and Runewars, but you are right that it is out of place here. FFG knew that too, very quickly, which is why they released the dice combat pdf rules. GW has no issue getting re-art versions done. Look at all the new Talisman versions like Batman and Kingdom Hearts. That said, people mostly want the original, or the GW original, and I think that nostalgia is more powerful with DQ than with almost any other GW game.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
@@johnmiddleton4291 I thought Middle Earth Quest came first. That was a great-looking game, and the card system worked really nicely. One of those ones I always wanted but it kept getting "bumped" for games I thought I would get to the table more easily. Of course, now it costs a small fortune. I don't know how well the game sold for FFG. Maybe GW have just decided it isn't worth the return on investment. Unlike themed Talismans, which I'm sure are money machines. You're right about nostalgia though. It's certainly a big part for me - I never wanted the FFG version of the game.
@johnmiddleton4291
@johnmiddleton4291 3 года назад
It sold well enough for FFG to bother with a revised edition release. It is worth noting that the original designer Jakob Bonds worked with FFG on both re-releases and so the card combat is something he had to have liked. I think a big draw of the FFG game was that it included cards and rules to use the heroes in Descent and Runewars (I think). It was an exclusive expansion for those games in that way. I think you are right about middle-earth coming a year earlier, but I would bet the entire card combat thing was one pool of designers sharing work, as lots of FFG games came out with it in a very short period. The FFG dice are bad because of random period. Middle-Earth Quest is one of the great might have beens for FFG. It does not solo easily and never received any expansion support, so went unloved for ages. Solo isn't really that bad if you are used to playing both sides and you can mostly just randomly play the bad guys, as the heroes have a very rough time just walking around the map. It's a lot like Gear of War, though that is made for solo, in that GW didn't know what it had at the time and focused on other things. X-Wing probably.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
@@johnmiddleton4291 Gears of War was neat but I eventually passed it on. I just never seemed to play it (I think, mainly because it was a pain to set up). FFG did try to innovate with their combat systems, which I always appreciated even though I tend to find their designs too fiddly for what they need to be. I liked the Runebound chit system, but I think a lot of people disliked that. Are you going to pick up the new Descent?

I think in most cases, if someone lists one picture, lists an item as "not checked", or fails to answer questions, they know well enough it's not a complete game. The toughest ones to figure out are the charity auctions, or when parents are selling their kids' stuff, because they genuinely don'y have a clue what the game is or what is supposed to be in it, and have no clue how to find out the answers to your questions.

With the recent HeroQuest ressurection, maybe other games will get a similar treatment. This one looks very easy to replicate; excepting the 4 figurines, it's all cardboard. I was surprised to see a Talisman logo on the box lid. Is there a rule cross-over, or is it just branding, "… from the makers of …" and so on.

Games Workshop still have the rights to this one. Since parting ways with Fantasy Flight Games, they have found someone to republish Talisman, but I guess they just haven't found someone willing to republish DungeonQuest yet (unless I've missed something). The Talisman name on the box is just branding. The Talisman logo actually says "from the makers of" on it, but the text isn't very visible from a distance.
@johnmiddleton4291

The first version of modern Talisman 4th ed and the art was done pre-FFG by Black Industries. The later FFG stuff matched all the original art and design style, which is why it never recieved the Runewars FFG style of their other fantasy games. I have a feeling that GW was responsible for the iscensing of all the art and kept control of those assets, using FFG just as a publisher. DungeonQuest would be a cool game to update, but a lot of the appeal is it's old-school quirkiness and the charming 80s GW art style.

I am Missing 1 ROOM CARD. Does it really affects the game?

Not really. You wouldn't ever really notice it, and you never get through the whole deck during a game anyway.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Thanks so much, I dont know what type of Room Card actually is missing. All I know is that Empty Rooms are complete with 34 pcs and all other Types of Room Card has at least One Card present.

Would it be a good idea if i make a sticker of Jewellery 30GP and stick it to one of the Empty Room? So I will be having 1 Missing Empty Toom instead of 1 Missing Jewelry.
