I'm already excited about this series. It's like hypothetical House Hunters, but with someone with good taste and respect for original architecture so I'm not constantly yelling at the TV.

I get so sad and stressed out thinking of when my parents sell my childhood home, there’s so much character with wood/brick, all the rooms are separated with doors/arches, I’m sure the person who buys it will tear all the walls out & paint over all the brick. A brick house near our house sold & the new owners tore half the brick out. It looked like a little cottage in a story book before. Now it looks half finished. Another tore apart the garden in the front and put in mulch. Another had a Spanish home, the new owners are talking about taking apart all the details that make it Spanish . I just don’t get these “updates” people prefer😅 this video is stressing me out, but I’ll finish watching because it’s you haha

Detroit, Michigan at $500k or $600k max! Super historic places. Southeastern Michigan in general has some weird historic hidden gems...a lot of 1900s-1930s not-updated houses. Love this as a series!!!

This probably doesn’t sound fun to you, but if you’re looking for an extreme challenge… I challenge you to find ONE house in Anchorage, Alaska that you like. Just one. Unlimited budget. I’m from there and the housing options are depressing as hell. Even the “nice” houses lack character and are so oddly designed.

It would be cool to see you pick out homes in Seattle since it there is a lot of craftsman bungalow architecture with a lot of natural wood. Housing in Seattle is pretty high but I think a budget of 1.5 to 2 mil would leverage some pretty cool results from neighborhoods such as ballard, fremont, queen anne, capitol hill, etc.

Haha! I love your commentary “ugh… people are gonna… ruin this place.” That’s exactly how it feels to go on Zillow. You can even compare homes to overpriced grayscale flips. It’s abominable what some flippers do.

I’d love to see you hop over to the east coast and do Boston for a budget of 1.75 mil. Not the burbs, but Boston proper neighborhoods and the adjacent small cities-a tight circle, like Boston, Allston, Cambridge. Brighton, Somerville, South Boston, Dorchester, Roslindale, East Boston, etc.

It’s so sad seeing you go through all of these. Especially Highland Park which is where I graduated H.S. from and all of my family and friends still live there. My aunt lives up a beautiful hill and has for the last 20 years. She bought her home for 320,000 and it’s worth over a million now with very minimal updates. She did update her kitchen/bathroom and flooring to the horrible farm house style with millennial gray floors. They do not match the rest of the Spanish style interior at all. I seriously hate what they did because it’s so out of style now and they just did it 2 years ago. Every time I walked in there I saw so much potential for how it could be brought back to its glory and they stripped away the character. She also does have a small basement, which flooded earlier this year due to all of the rain. I still remember a time where all of these areas where places you didn’t necessarily want to live because of all the gang activity. It was affordable though for us Angelinos and now all of the charm of these areas is gone with the people who once inhabited these areas. I understand the pros of gentrification as it has cleaned the streets, literally from both grime and gangs, but it’s sad that it comes at the expense of generations who had history in these areas. 😢

This video and concept is SO fun! It's nice to know I'm not the only person who browses zillow in my spare time for houses I will literally never buy. For the next city, I think Chicago would be cool. You could give us a digital tour of sorts with your favorite neighborhoods in the city, and the area where you grew up!

I think you should go to another city you’re familiar with so you can know which areas are desirable to live in. Chicago would be great! I’d also love to see you do LA again but with a smaller or larger budget.

I live in Atlanta so it would be cool to see you do a vid about this area but honestly I feel like Midwestern cities would be neat, too. I like to look at cities like St. Louis, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, etc. Seems like some really cool old homes around those parts.

Tip: put a filter on year built to get pre-1960 or so for a more interesting search. Seattle - 1.75M.

Love this series! You should try looking in Sweden/Scandinavia. People love keeping original features like amazing tile fireplaces. Prices in Stockholm can be steep, but there are some beautiful homes all over that are affordable.

So good! I'd love to see Boston/Cambridge? maybe with a higher price range depending on whether you're going for a full brownstone/house instead of a flat, but personally when I stalk the flats (especially around beacon hill) I just set it to a 1-2bedroom for up to 1.5mil

Do Portland next! There are some incredible houses with so much character and a lot of people here appreciate design. So you’d be able to find a lot of mid century wood interiors 😊

I live in St. Louis and some of our more charming smaller cities on the outskirts of St. Louis city proper are: Webster Groves, Kirkwood, University City and Richmond Heights. I think you will find our prices a breath of fresh air.

My cute one story childhood home in cheviot hills (next to culver city) got torn down a few years ago to build a cookie cutter two story home that looks like all of the other new builds in the area 😢 We used to have a big front yard that all the neighborhood kids would come play at but the new house was made as massive as possible leaving virtually no green space. Wish more people appreciated older homes.

Also, love this concept! Would love to see you do other cities, or talk more in depth about how you would actually renovate a space.

What’s weird is you can get more bang for your buck in some areas on the west side than you can in Silverlake and Los Feliz. What’s crazy is Highland Park and especially Echo Park were not desirable at *ALL* until recently.

When you were talking about the sqft around 4:24 you were looking at the lot size, not the home's sqft - the home's sqft is right by the price :) I was listening while making dinner and I was like holy shit that's an insanely large home lol. I love this series idea, it would be really cool if you could look abroad too! It would be so fun to check out Lisbon, Nice, Milan, etc!

My son and his girlfriend are moving to Paris in December. She will get a fat housing subsidy from her new job too. Currently they live in Dupont Circle in DC so they’re accustomed to insane housing budgets. Yes, I vote for Paris next. But even someplace like Kansas City or Charlotte NC would be interesting too because a lot of people *have to move* for their jobs etc. To get dropped into a place where almost everything is cookie cutter is a real challenge.

Would love to see more videos in the “check out this Fucking home” series. Really loved seeing realistic homes as well as your commentary to understand why they’re so great from a design lens.

I think Montreal could be really fun for you, like on an island, not suburbs. It has very particular architecture and mix of built form not typical for North America.

Love this series so much already, and I second the idea to do episodes on how you’d design your newly “purchased” home. I think it would be fun and challenging to find a place in some of the states in the US that you might not want to live or would have trouble finding a place. I’m thinking Florida beach houses, rural states/farmlands, etc! Also vote for New England proper, like Mass, Rhode Island, even Vermont.

Doing a video on L.A. homes for 1m or less including the neighborhoods you selected but also (and more likely) others that are more affordable like Glendale, AltaDena, Alhambra, Pasadena, Tujunga, etc. would be helpful/ fun to see in this market.

We sold my mom's house several years ago and the couple who bought it are really cool and nice. Last year my brother stopped by and just knocked on the door and they invited him in. He took pictures of what they'd done (so far) and it's pretty much the opposite of my parents' taste, but it's cool. For example, my mom had actually walled over our fireplace and the new owners freed the fireplace again!

When I get fed up with looking at properties I can afford, I go and look at the top end. Usually I'm horrified at the bad taste and how badly they are laid out. Decor can be fixed reasonably easily, but layout is harder. Having to go through a room to get to the kitchen is the worst transgression. And then there is the question - How many bathrooms do you really want to clean?

this might be a bit too random but my boyfriend and I are in the process of moving to Japan and buying a house in the countryside (you can buy a whole ass house for like 50-100K depending on size and how decrepit they are) to renovate.
