Air brakes in rail terms are actually better than the clamp breaks, this is because each rail carriage is connected by air pipes, when the breaks are put on the vacuum is released and a piston in each rail car will apply the breaks, meaning your whole train is breaked. I have no idea if this adds up to what’s in the game tho. 😂

To add to this Railroad Online simulates narrow gauge rail which was used in a lot of places there was tight turns such as ports and logging spurs, etc. And in a lot of industries that were transient like logging it was built kinda slipshod and using old equipment for a lot longer then the mainline. 4 wheel jimmies (the ore and coal hoppers) lasted all the way up to the 80s in some operations.

A) At 26:00 just split the train and take half up and leave it, then go back and get the other half. It's called doubling the hill and real railroads do it. B) 6% is way too steep C) The problem with Betsy isn't that she's "too powerful" it's that it appears to have WAY too much adhesion. Betsy is much lighter than one of the bigger locos, so the friction force between Betsy and the rail is lower, meaning she can't transmit as much force to the rail as a heavier engine could. So a real life Betsy might be able to move a lot of cars around a rail yard on flat ground where all she's doing is overcoming the rolling resistance of the cars. But on any kind of grade, she'd start slipping very quickly under load because of her low weight and adhesion. Sand improves adhesion, but so does weight on the driving wheels.

Just a tip Kan. Curves will automatically slow a train down and curves with inclines will slow you way down. I have seen it done before even with fully loaded 10 or 12 cars but they had straighter track. Also remember that even though your engine is on flat ground. The rest isn’t and it then have to pull it up a hill or as more cars goes up then the weight the train have to lift goes up

kAN, The more curves there are and the tighter they are, the worse any train will perform because curves GREATLY increase friction on the wheels, but in the "waste through heat" kind of friction, not the "going forward" kind. That and sand does not help with power and going forwards, it helps only to reduce wheel slip if you ever encounter it.

The second engine is called a "Remote". You can attach it at the front, or in the middle for long trains. The MAIN thing to keep in mind is that the Remote is an assistant. The Remote should be using minimal power while the lead engine does the majority of the work. On modern trains, they control the Remotes from the lead engine, but given the way this game works, it will be much more difficult. Without someone to assist, you probably have to put Betsy up front, behind Cooke

There are lots of companies that use the same initials, and it’s only really an issue if they are direct competitors (as in both same industry AND same general area)-and wouldn’t be a legal issue anywhere I know of unless the older one trademarked the initials themselves (not just the name of the company) or could prove the younger one chose the initials specifically to trick consumers into thinking they’re working with a trusted brand when they’re not. So a fun bit of trivia, but nothing @kAN really needs to fuss about given his Railroad is in a fictional universe and not in competition with the Strasburg.

There is actually a huge thing you guys can do to not waste so much water while driving your trains. And that is to reduce your cutoff (Called "reverser" in game.) when at speed. TL;DR at the bottom of this comment, *and when I say "High" or "Low" I'm refering to how close the sliders in game are to 100% (High) and 0% (Low) respectively.* You see, steam trains have two throttles. One called the "regulator" which is used to regulate the pressure of the steam being injected into the driving cylinders. And one called the "cutoff" which controls how long you're injecting steam into the driving cylinders. With the cutoff set very high, you're spending most of the piston's travel injecting steam. Keeping the pressure pushing against the piston high even when the piston is nearing the end of its travel. This gives you quite a lot of power at low speeds. And spreads said power out quite evenly across the pistons travel, so you're way less likely to get wheel slip. Which makes a high cutoff great for when the train is standing still, or at a *very* low speed. But as your train starts to pick up speed, you should reduce the cutoff. (Though never past 0% unless you need to slow down fast. You should probably understand why...) As injecting steam near the end of the pistons travel isn't efficent, as that steam gets very little time to actually do any work before being vented out of the cylinder for the piston's return stroke. So to avoid just wasting that steam, you should be running the train with a higher regulator and lower cutoff to avoid wasting steam at higher speeds. You should only really need to increase the cutoff if you are slowing down or climbing a hill. Otherwise it is just a waste of steam. And assuming that this game does simulate the time it takes for the cylinders to vent out the left over steam, your trains might actually go even faster if you reduce the cutoff, due to their being less steam left over at the end to vent out. TL;DR. Steam trains have two throttles, the regulator and the cutoff. (Called "reverser" in game.) These together determine how much power your train can deliver. But the cutoff has a different effect on the train performance depending on how high it is set. The higher it is set compared to the regulator, the more smooth the power delivery will be, which reduces the risk of losing traction. Making it excelent for getting the train and its cargo to start moving. But the lower it is set, the less steam will be wasted as the train moves, by only injecting steam into the driving cylinders when it would be the most efficient. This can also result in the train being able to achive a higher top speed. How you should be driving a steam train, is to have high cutoff at the start, but a much lower cutoff once the train has started moving.
@PaladinCasdin
@PaladinCasdin 2 года назад
Or, in more layman's terms, a throttle and gears analogue. I've played around with the reverser in game, and it seems to have very little if any effect - I don't think it's fully implemented yet. He mostly just uses WAY too much regulator, which is why he wastes so much steam. But it's hard to explain to people who don't really know steam trains (my grandfather was a driver, so I know enough) that more regulator doesn't necessarily mean better.

Few issues: 6% is a near impossible grade. You need to use a geared locomotive for that like the Heisler, Climax or Shay. That’s what they’re designed for. You need to run the compressor to power the air brakes for the tender. You will see you lose air brake pressure throughout the journey - gently applying more and more brakes when you’re trying to pull. You never removed the manual brakes on the tender at any point, which are on by default. You were fighting your own brakes to climb. The mogul should have otherwise done that journey. Betsy is getting nerfed, it’s too powerful. But it also is meant to be powerful as it’s an industrial shunter - but it’s slow and has no capacity.

According to the stats in the purchase window, the porter has less tractive force than the Mogul. This takes into account the wheel size, and all other differences in the steam engine itself. It's the literal tonnage pull measured at the draw bar/coupler. By those numbers Mogul should have won the tug-o-war. I have a guess that the Betsy is a bit "beefed up" so you have pulling power to begin making money in the beginning of the game. My only problem with the Mogul is that all the reflective surfaces on the engine slow down the frame rate of a mediocre graphics card. The game runs fine in high and "epic" settings as long as the engine is not in the camera view. ... and 5000 gallons of water weighs 41,650 lbs or 20.8 tons. From the way it was explained to me from my train crazy uncle was a Reverser is how much of the piston stroke your letting in steam, so you want high numbers at lower speeds for more tq, and then as you get up to speed you can pull it back to lower numbers and be more efficient. This was years ago though so I could be wrong or he could have been full of it lol
@catnipleaf8680
@catnipleaf8680 2 года назад
IRL the reverser controls the timing of steam injection and cutoff. at a "high" setting, it's admitting steam over nearly the entire piston stroke, and at a "low" setting, it's admitting steam over only a portion of the piston stroke. "higher" settings are used when starting from a dead stop, since you want near-constant steam pressure over as much of the piston stroke as possible. "lower" settings are used at higher speeds to use steam more efficiently (a steam locomotive is most efficient with the regulator wide open and a very early cutoff) however, this function has not been implemented in the game yet, so changing reverser setting doesnt do much

Opening the cylinder cocks will help you get started if your stopped on an incline but their primary purpose is to vent all the condensation and bad steam out of the cylinders as they heat up from ambient temperature. liquid water is obviously not compressible so needless to say having water trapped in your cylinders when your trying to move is not going to end particularly well.

You need to get the climax for the mountains. The climax is the most powerful locomotive in the game, the Climax will break couplers long before you need a helper locomotive. It is best used on routes with massive grades, or as switching locomotives as you can outrun it on foot at full throttle. Yes, it is that slow. Biggest Advantages- Most Powerful Locomotive in game, decent viability. Biggest Disadvantages- Slower than being beaten to death with a pillow, pricey. I did get this from someone else but I thought you should know this
@Bendigo1

I mean in real railroad practice, they deal with gradients almost in the way you did here. In my opinion, you shoud set up a small siding at the bottom of the hill and stick either betsy or betsy 2 there so that way you can pull up in a train, stop at the bottom, stick a second engine on the front (another real practice) and go like that all the way along!
@antontalbot9148
@antontalbot9148 2 года назад
Obviously you didn't have much choice with the railroad, but 6% is a huge gradient. That's arround 1 foot up every 16 feet across, while 1 foot up in every 30 is considered very steep in real life.

RIP that lumber train. Made for a cool looking wreck though. The Geared locos, ie The Heisler and climax trade top speed for pulling torque, that's why if you push the regulator too much they start to slip, so you have to be more careful to not open it up to quickly. (The Eureka is the opposite, trades torque for speed, so if everything is flat, it should be the best). Unless you want to relay all of your track to the mountain, you might have to just save up for a geared locos. Years of Bethesda game shave taught me to save often and in multiple slots. I'm still surprised at how many people just do something without a save beforehand, especially since the game makes it really easy.

The Heisler slips because of a bug, not because they "trade speed for power". That's already built into their maximum speed and pulling torque.
