Today I am taking you guys through a buying guide of the best string trimmer, leaf blower, and lawn edger for a lawn care professional. This display is at my local dealer Weingartz, and thank you for letting me film! :)
Many equipment brands were on display, but we ran through the major players and their GAS-powered product lineup.
The current equipment WE USE (and continue to invest in with OUR money) are:
ECHO Trimmers (2620's)
RedMax Leaf Blowers (8560s)
and STIHL Kombi 131R and STIHL HS56c Hedge Trimmers
We use various other hand tools from each brand, but these are the "top of the line" and BEST offerings for each category, IMO.
What do you guys think about the suggestions we made? Agree? Disagree? Let me know what you guys are rocking in the comments down below!

My younger brother who is about 15 now got hit by a 1999 Toyota Camry going 40 in front of my old house. He was doing a neighbors leaf job and blowing piles of leafs to the street. The car hit him in the back. The Br600 he was wearing broke the guys windshield, and ultimately saved my brothers life. If it wasn’t for the blower his back would have been absolutely broken. This happened in 2019. he stopped leaf blowing in 2020 but we still have the blower and it works great, there was absolutely no damage to the blower and you would have never of guessed something like that happened by looking at the blower. My brother had made a full recovery less than a year after the incident. He had a real bad concussion and his arm was torn up. Long story short, I have respect for Stihl because it saved my brother.

I agree Stihls are frustrating when they get old. But the attachments and versatility is amazing that we still buy them for some things. We had a red max EB28500 last over 10 years, amazing leaf blower just not as power as the H 580, but way more reliable

Love my Echo weed trimmer! Beats the socks off the other brands I've owned. Great video, Brian! I've always valued your opinions and observations of the various brands of lawn equipment out there. I'm in a caregiver situation this year, but I'm finding it hard to stay inside when the lawn is calling me and the weather is so nice! All the best to you, Brian!

I’m a Stihl guy. We run 131R’s because we do a lot of hillsides and creek banks. 91R is good too though especially if you’re just doing residential yards, but 131 is same weight with more power.

Are you using many of the Stihl's 4-mix engines? how are they holding up? I'm asking seriously as I'm looking purchasing a fair bit of equipment, the knocks on the 4-mix are their cheap carburetor's and plastic camshafts, that will melt if running the engine to hot. At least that is what people is saying. Have you seen any of those issues?

The 2620 PAS system is the best! We use that for overgrown trimming, and we use it for hedge trimming up high, pole saw, and edging. We then use the smaller echo 225? for weekly trimming because it is lighter to carry around all day. I heard from a little birds that taking the carbon filter off the smaller echos make them run a lot smoother and longer…

Great video. I run the Redmax EBZ7500, Echo SRM-2620, and hedge trimmer is the Echo SHC-225. I hear you totally on the buy once/cry once theory and so far it's not let me down. All the above listed equipment has helped me power through various jobs easily with very little struggle. I would have gone Echo for my blower too as I'm a big fan of Echo equipment but I am friends with one of my local Redmax dealers and he gave me a deal I couldn't resist on the 7500. Just like choosing your mowing equipment, it's imperative you choose wisely for handhelds too.

When Stihl’s get old they can be annoying, however a lot of that has to do with carbon buildup inside the exhaust manifold. Stihl is designed to run with the throttle wide open, which burns off that extra carbon. It seems kinda ridiculous, but I asked my Stihl rep why they’re like that and they said in order to please emissions laws internationally the only thing they could reasonably come up with was “all or nothing throttle.” In my own experience I’ve found that before shutting the machine down, running it wide open for a few seconds first seems to take care of the issue. Have almost all Stihl for my setup after figuring that out and they’ve been going strong for a solid 5 years.
@TaylorBonnett
@TaylorBonnett Год назад
I agree on the 2620. But I ran that for a month and I came across a yard that was hard to cut liek 4ft high it’s nice having extra power. That’s why I also have a 3020T that sucker cuts amazing
@samueljock2994

Agreed, first choice is based on service availability. If you're in the stihl line and doing commercial work. Don't waste your time with anything below 131s. We run 4 131s bicycles (not sure why never see those on RU-vid) 2 131 kombis they can run all attachments in just about any situation. Serving 150 properties a week from postage stamps to large boxes these machines have been kicking it for 5 years. Go big, do your maintenance, and they will keep you marching. Same with blowers get the big 800s, we love side pulls with no issues. Have 1 or 2 handheld blowers for those postage stamp properties, we like the battery light and quick, usually two batteries per day. Best of luck, keep marching!!

I only have experience with Echo and Stihl. The thing that I've noticed is Stihl products typically are designed to be ran "all or nothing" wide open, full throttle. This is very useful in some applications but not all. Echo from my experience has a bit better throttle variance which I take advantage of especially when running a string trimmer near vulnerable areas like windows etc. This is why I tend to prefer Echo.

My first trimmer was an older cub cadet cc2000 that's as old as I am. It worked well until the head wore out on it and then I decided it was time for an Echo.(I have since put a ryobi kombi shaft on the Cub cadet motor with a speed feed 400 on it.) I went with the PAS 2620 with the pro torque head and put the bigger 20in shield on it, just can't make myself take the shield off! I went the kombi route because l could get more tools for less money while still having the 2620 motor. My first blower was a 9010 echo, and l love it. We also won a limited edition 580 that's nice for grass clippings etc. I only do 5ish yards so l dont need dedicated units, but its enough to justify nice tools! When l went to buy my echo trimmer, l learned a lot from your videos so thanks!!

I started in 2010 with an Echo SRM-225 with the Echomatic head. I ended last year with that same trimmer. Quit lawn care, but still run the trimmer on my 2 acre property. Now has a Speedfeed 400 on it. It's the only string trimmer I've ever bought new and the only one I carried on my trailer for 12 yrs. It's never not started. Always ran ethanol free gas with Amsoil Sabre mix. Did the Youcan kit 5 or so yrs ago. It's served me well.

Been doing a lot of research and learned that those two units are a good starting point for a residential lawn care business in the beginning. I'm a huge fan of yours as well so thank you for all your advice. Love listening to you and watching your videos, huge motivation to me. Please tell me what you think about the Toro TimeCutter, would love to get your opinion on that.

@Todd Rhine As far as I'm concerned, I think they just changed the gearing ratio to introduce more torque. Nothing else was inherently changed. As a professional, I wouldn't get the standard 2320 unless there was a significant price difference.

We run a lawn care company in Canada. For leaf blowers we run a lot of Husq 580BTS. The most powerful (I believe still) for blowing snow, and comfortable, downside sometimes cracked fuel lines in cold weather and tubes coming apart we have to tape them together. For weed trimmers the shindawa T235. Good combo of light and powerful. Downside the guard around the head is a bit bulky

I'm a big echo fan, got a kombi 225 with a trimmer and edger attachment. Got a 2620t trimmer, a 770t backpack, and a 2620 handheld blower. I love my 2620t and 770t, the reason I got a handheld is for my really small lawns that I have several of, and it almost has as much power as a 580t. My pas 225 is a backup weed whip, and a good edger. I do all HOA maintenance so my edges are just weekly growth which it does fine with. I'm thinking for next year I'll probably get a hedge trimmer attachment for it. I might also try out a husky 525lst, I've heard they're light and powerful. Thanks for all the videos, and for this buying guide, wish I had some Redmax in my area to try out.

I worked for Maintenance Engineers Inc. during the 90's doing lawn and garden services for Air Force we ran all Echo Equipment but we were constantly replacing parts left and right very seldom did we ever get a new piece of equipment if we did the Foreman usually beat the snot out of it and then hammy downed it to the guys on the Weed Eating crew or Blower Crews, so when I decided to start my own lawn care business I went with Stihl and never looked back 25+ years and only had one String Trimmer fail. When I retire a piece of equipment I usually either give it to a young go getter or a needy family. I like the FS91R for string trimmers but my Brother who now works with me likes the FS94. For the Edger I run FC91. Blowers depends on what yard I am mowing I will use the BR800X or a handheld BG86CE . My Hedgers are the HS56 and HL94K and Chainsaw I carry the MS271 Farm Boss or the MS170 for the lightweight work and a HT135 Pole Saw that I bought used from a guy who was in need of some money for $250 All I did to it was a quick cleanup and new chain and I have got 5 years of service. Like you mentioned once you pick a brand you might as well stick to them. Stihl has treated me right over the last 25+ years.

Brian, good afternoon! Cary here in Lexington, NC. Have had a Lawn Care Service for one year, but that was "just" a side-hustle. Now, as of one month ago, it IS my day job. Purchased the ECHO PAS-2620 and several attachments. Made that decision (to go with the "attachment series" vs dedicated devices) because it simply fits me better. I am VERY happy with my choice. The Blower Attachment with the PAS-2620 works well for how I use it (clean up after mowing) but don't think that it would suffice when it is time to blow leaves. I will be investing in a dedicated backpack blower for that. I really appreciate all of the advice that you give out. While I am "young" in the lawn care business, I am 56 yo! Still pretty young, but not 22 any longer! HA! HA! Really love your "Best 'Insert Equipment Here' for 'Insert Year Here'" Videos. Very useful, informative, and fun. I will likely ALWAYS go with ECHO, it is good to know what is out there. So, thank you, Brian! Much appreciate all of your guidance in the YT Videos.

May not be the most popular choice among people but I am actually really enjoying the electric industry and what it's bringing to market. I'm currently a solo company and I run EGO across the board. All batteries work for every piece of equipment. Every piece has great power so far, more than enough for what I have needed and the best part, zero maintenance. Yes, batteries are expensive when time to replace them but in the end the cost of gas, oil, and all maintenance parts and headaches it most likely equals out. I'm a big convience guy, less time on maintenance means more family and me time which is the biggest win in my book. Plus in a few years it'll probably be about the only thing on the market I'd bet. To each their own, I'm liking electric

I have done professional landscaping for years in 3 states. now on gulf cost of Florida with year round lawn care. Have used echo/shindawa, honda, husqvarna and stihl. Stihl is hands down the best . occasionally another brand will win out on a single spec but fall short else where. Stihl wins overall design, comfort/ergonomics, durability, ease of maintenance, and fuel efficiency. Br800c (side pull start great feature) best blower. Fs91 just fine for edging and trimming 131 for heavy trimming. Kombi motors for hedge trimming. Keep your fleet all one brand save on parts. Still have one husqvarna saw and one echo trimmer in the fleet because you cant judge without trying but they are the least used by the crew.

Thanks for sharing! I actually have to go there today to replace my echo 2620. I’ve had it less than a year as I’m about a year in as a part time landscaper. Just yesterday, I was doing a weed job (parking lot full of weeds and glass and debris) where my echo was my only tool on the truck. After the job, I loaded my only tool on the trimmer rack on my trailer, came home, saw family outside on their way to get ice cream, and joined them. Came back home to unload trailer, my echo was gone! I checked home camera and could see that the trimmer was not on the trailer and I’m 1000% positive that I walked to the trailer and placed it in the rack! Came back to the scene and of course no trimmer because I put it on the trailer. This indicates that it must have fallen off (which I took the same route hoping to see it) which is sad a scary at the same time. Right before that job, a guy honked me to tell me that my blower was dragging on the street. Something I seem to forget a lot lately! Based on your review, I guess I’ll be replacing it with the same echo although I hate how it throws rocks at me as I trim backwards which seems to cut the grass (and me) better than going forward. Young (older) grasshopper here!

Hey Brian, this was one of the most educational videos I've seen in a while about Lawncare Equipment. Great job man! Would you be able to talk about maintenance some time? I'm up in Canada, and Stihl and Husqvarna are the one two choices up here, Echo seems to be a third for the most part, yet the guys that run Echo's just shake their heads at Stihl and Husky fan boys. I've quickly scanned the comments, and I see Echo coming up a LOT more than Stihl, and I don't think I saw any Husky guys chiming in at the time of me posting. It would be VERY cool to see a discussion between an Echo user, and a Stihl, or Redmax user, and discuss cost of ownership, downtimes, repair costs, etc. Thanks again for the amazing work you put into these videos! Fantastic info! I really do appreciate the time you take to put into these. I've learned a lot from you guys.

Every company will tell you that they have the best this and that in this industry, but the 9010-T blower has worked miracles in my cleanups, it is the most powerful one, but make sure you have those headphones by 3M handy.

I started with a husqvarna 128hd trimmer/edger/blower and it was a piece of crap, I use a sthil fs91r and km91r for trimming and edging and I like them, but they are a little heavy and I don't love having to adjust the valves. My backpack blower is a husqvarna and I've been happy with it so far.

Regarding Trimmers, I will always remember researching and coming across a small engine mechanic giving their perspective. They said, Stihls were regularly in the shop whereas Echo's very rarely even, practically never, ever came in for repairs. Bad for business but, good for Owner/Operators. I run Echo PAS-225's. 2620's are nice but, way too heavy if your doing overhead hedge trimming hours on end. RedMax is non existent on the West Coast of Canada.

I have a 1/4 acre yard and "overdo" it with the equipment but IDC. I like Having more than I need. I have the Stihl 91KM R with the attachments but I recently ditched the string trimmer part of it and bought the Echo 225 trimmer..much lighter and I love the feeder head. I use the Stihl for the edger, hedge trimmer and pole pruner saw. For blower I use the Echo 580T but was thinking of either getting the Stihl 600 or Echo 770. Not sure yet. Thanks.

I have a pressure cleaning business, and im looking for a low end commercial petrol leaf/debris blower mostly for prestarting a job i blow away any loose debris off the surface like; gum nuts, loose stones, sticks, plant matter etc. I then will use it later on after sanding just to blow the excess sand off the surface, as well as a final clean up. Is there any recommendations? Even hand held ones? Also what are your thoughts on the Honda 25cc blower?

@Brian, starting my business and curious on your opinion. Looking at 6.5x12 single axle trailer for $2700. 2,050 cargo limit. Just looking to do residential with some small commercial. Currently larges mower is a 36 Velke and toro timemaster, eventually plan on a stander in the 48-52 area. My question is, am I wasting my money on the trailer? They have a 7x14 for $4,100. I realize it’s not much more, but trying to save where I can to get started. Thanks, and I’m really learning a lot from you👍👍

I love redmax blowers and trimmers btw still use the eb7000 still runs! And the handheld unit is solid. Echo shc 225 and pas 265 for attachments, backup. Shin weedtrimmer, although redmax still my go to weedtrimmer...there all good commercial products tbh just maintain and your good to go. Advise for new guys start small then work up your inventory to better and more powerful blowers etc. Also you dont need the most powerful blower on market, my redmax has the power but i barely rev it and its enough power i need, i mean are you going up against a tornado? 😁

Trying to be cheap- I have my reliable SRM230- removed all the muffler restriction and it's been a very responsive trimmer for quite some time. Anyone have an idea how well the Bed Redefiner head would cut into the soil while using the SRM230 head? I only see me using the Bed Redefiner once or twice a year, so a $640 tool isn't justified...but if I can use the $300 head intended for the PAS, I'd be fine with that.

Can we get your bros to do a breakdown? I mean, not everyone knows how model #s work, and different versions of the same model. Ie: 5150 has been around for a while, they probably tweaked it since the first 5150 production runs. Some people like me, like seeing how a model evolved, and how well they listen to customers who buy it. You did touch that on the echo one.

I‘ve had a Stihl BR800C for a year and I love it. I disagree about the hip/side start. I find it comes in handy quite often, especially when I’m doing apartment complexes or even single family homes. People always come up and try to talk while I’m blowing off, and instead of having to take my blower off, set it down, crank it back up, and put it back on, I just give the 800 a gentle pull and I’m right back rolling. It always starts on the first or second pull, too.

I'm run almost exclusively Redmax. Echo 8010 blower is lucky to last three years. 2620 trimmer handle is terribly uncomfortable, and is a little on the heavy side. BCZ260 is lighter than the 2620, nicer trigger on the BCZ too.
