Friend of mine, (sadly passed away 2020), owned three E-types in the 60/70s. I went with him to pick up the first one, a Coupe. He traded-in his MGB for it. Car was at a dealers in New Cross Gate, London, and we had to get back to Basingstoke. So we drove back along the Old Kent Road. After about a mile he said to me, "Frase, I can't get it out of 2nd", to which I replied, "Oh No, is the gearbox knackered", to which he said "No, its just so fast !!"
Great, great video!! What a find. I drove an E-type back in 1972. My boss wanted me to run an errand so he let this 23-year--old take his jag on the freeway around Columbus Ohio. The experience was uncannily like driving a four-wheeled motorcycle. A four-wheeled Dunstall Norton Commando. No muss, no fuss, no histrionics, just give it a little gas and watch everything disappear in the rear view mirror. So incredibly cool. Never forgot that ride, thanks for the reminder!
I've owned a whole lot of cars but my '1966 E-Type Roadster" was one of the top three most memorable and it was undoubtedly in the top two of the most beautifu. Even after 50+ years, these cars still look fantastic. I purchased my '66 in Germany while stationed there in 1969. It was on my base with a "FOR SALE" sign so I contacted the owner and traded him my 1969 Simca 1200S plus $350. Being 23 years old and driving a Jag around Germany was unreal and I loved it. I shipped the car to New Jersey where I was discharged from the military and drove the car, without incident across the USA to California. That was one of the most memorable times of my life. The top was down the whole time. Stopped in Denver to visit a buddy I was stationed with and spent nine days with him. The long and short of the story was I found out why Jags have the reputation they do. As beautiful as they are, they are crap for reliability and maintenance. Rust, electrical, mechanicl and structurally they will get you and get you good. The "fun" factor gets a score of 100 when it comes to driving them. The "looks" factor gets a score of 100000 when looking at them. The score of maintenance is truly "off the charts" as you will soon find out. To own one and maintain one has to be a labor of love that is blind. I found out very soon in 1970 that I couldn't afford the car so I traded it for a 1969 L-71 427/435 Corvette with under 4000 miles. I still own and drive that same car today. It's every single bit as good looking and it's very maintainable. My 'Vette has 180,000 miles and is still going strong. I hope your "new" Jag gives you that much service. Drive it. Look at it. Enjoy it. I truly understand why people "love/hate" these cars. Can't wait to see what "weezard" has to say about it in three months. Best of luck.
Like many as beautiful, they are capricious. It's part of the magic. So wonderful and enviable, yet almost untenable no matter how rich and patient you are. A friend discovered a professional top consultant he sometimes managed to hire was selling cheap a wonderful 12 cylinder , his dream coupe. He was ready to sign a check after seeing the car. But in a moment of lucidity, he asked 'Oh, come on, why are you selling it? Where is the hidden problem I cannot find?' The affluent pro replied 'The car is perfect, no rust, few Kms, I am the original owner, but I cannot afford it'.
Any cars that spent time in the UK are just waiting to rust, badly. Salt is used on the icy roads during winter, not grit. The salt is paid for by the British Auto Makers Association, (or similar) guess why. They tried the same trick in NZ but were foiled by objections to salt ending up in our streams.
@@howardsimpson489 These cars don't actually need "salt" to rust. Just water. If a company like Lexus decided to produce this exact car, I'd be the first in line to buy one. Imagine those "Hollywood Good Looks" with the perfection it deserved.
In 1961 on the road serious 1 E type 3.8 £ 2.089 Sterling .in USA same car $ 2.491 . to keep the price down there was NO under body protection so rust caused by just water eat away at them never mind in the UK they spread tens of thousands of tons of salt .as some one mentioned deliberately done so you had to keep buying there cars 😂😂😂
Whilst I don't own an e type but I still have my 50 year old xj6 however. It is extremely reliable, the electrics and mechanical stuff need less maintenance than my 1964 mercedes w110 200d but then I do maintain it myself.
Totally worth a mild restoration. Stop the cancer before it gets way out of control. Remember paint hides all sins !! The world's most beautiful car of all time deserves a $10K paint job and body repair.
Yeah that outer door skin is already done for, by the time rust is poking out through the paint all the way along like that it's probably too far gone to bother trying to patch if you want a decent result. Hard to tell on camera but the rest of it looks salvageable without going OTT, if it's done right now.
Hey Tyler, love the car! Me and my dad have a Business here in the UK specialising in all things E Type, restoring and repairing them so if you ever need advice or parts even let us know! I agree with what you say about original survivor cars, there is some magic you can’t restore back into them, nothing drives like a good E. Also I believe with your car being a US example it’ll have the lower ratio LSD making it more accelerative at the cost of top speed. If you wanted to check the body number there is a little tab behind the left hand boot panel with it on however it’s not un heard of for these to sometimes be different in true British fashion 😂. Best wishes Tyler you deserve all your success.
Hoovie, I was 8 yrs old and my grandfather had just purchased that car in Red/black top. He lived in Edmond at the time. He took me for a ride, turned out on Memorial, which was basically in the country at that time. First time I had ever gone over 100 mph, needless to say, something I will never forget. Thanks for the reminder and what a beautiful car, enjoy.
I'm going to assume you're talking about Edmond, OK. Both of my parents grew up in Edmond in the 60s and anything east of Bryant or south of 33rd was "out in the sticks" considering how small town was back then. I-35 had 4-Way stop signs as did what is now Broadway Extension from Edmond to downtown OKC. I still remember in the early 90s when there was a small grass airfield on the SE corner of 33rd and Broadway, and either side of the train tracks from Memorial to 15th was farmland.
Next week: Tonight, on bottom gear! Hoovie gets a 68,000$ repair bill, Wizard Buys the entire state of Kansas, And Euroasian Bob acquires a repaired Mk.1 Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaag at a steal of a price!
It's not just a car though, it's a work of art, it's a piece of automotive legend, it's an achievement that has never really been equaled by the British motor industry since, a car that is more than a car, as Clarkson once said of an Aston Martin once, its 'bite the back of your hand beautiful'. But more, so much more.
Ok, when the camera was doing it's sweep around the front and side of the Jag and then continued, I realized I was on my second deep breath in breath out experiencing my astonishment of this car. What a beauty and British racing green too.
This has to be the best car you’ve ever bought. A perfect car in perfect spec, the right colour and wheels on an S1. Please drive it just as the previous owner has quite clearly loved it. Its a car which the kids these days will never see if owners just locks it away to be preserved indefinitely. As a brit I love to see E types every now and then but they are never presented like this. PS, I’ve seen E type number 1 in the flesh (as driven by JC in the top gear episode) and it has to be the most beautiful thing in the world, same S1 in british racing green with wire wheels. Favourite car in the hooptie fleet
100% agree, out of all the ones he has, this one is the best, and at the best price. I could see this car selling for 90 even with the issues. The ability to daily drive and not worry about losing value would also make it the funnest to drive. The 300 SL is great, but if you had one….would you drive it to the store and leave it?
One word to describe the E-Type Jaguar -----Beautiful , thanks for a wonderful intro & burn out !! FYI the Thor hammer is copper & Hide ( leather ) I used them all the time in England , I was a maintenance Engineer at Lucas Aerospace in Birmingham :) . We can join the Wizard in drooling over your brilliant E-Type .
The fact that you found the original owner's skeleton in the trunk adds immeasurably to the prominence. Congrats Hoovie. You are slowly acquiring all the holy grail cars and that is an amazing find. The XKE is unquestionably one of the most beautiful cars ever created. My era.
I truly believe you hit the jackpot with this Jag! Slowly bring it back to original and enjoy the hell out of it! Congrats man! Never part with this one!
Personally I love the Patina. And connection with the original owner who cared for it so much. Only things I would change: the roof seal and the tyres. Maybe the seats, but they look really nice and last. And what the Wizard recommends of course.
Just seeing all that love this car had with his first owner almost made a tear come out. What an absolute jewel of a car. Please keep it for as long as you can and keep it really well. It was someones treasure.
It makes we happy to see someone really appreciate such an amazing car with great heritage. I think you are the right guy Hoovie to enjoy and maintain a series 1 E-type. As an aside, had a S1 XJ6 and loved that car. Eventually i'll get another, but loved replacing a turn signal light and seeing "Made in England" on the taillight lenses. - Enjoy
Man…can we take a moment to appreciate Hoovie doing a burnout & clutch drop in a 60 year old E-type. Fortunate people that own these beautiful vehicles would never in 1 million years do that. This was F**KIN Monumental. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
As a Brit I was happy to see you enjoying one of our old sports cars. Also appreciated the reference to our country's recent bereavement. Enjoy the Jag!
Man I love this channel. You always blow my mind with the cars you pick up and the effort you put into your videos! For years you've never ceased to amaze me, thanks for the good times Tyler :)
Hi Tyler, from Sydney, Australia I'm glad you have found this Jag , now a 66yr old I have driven a 4.2litre Jaguar since I was 19yrs old, so a while now. AND THERE IS -NOTHING- like a 1owner LOVED 4.2litre e-type, or, it's big monstrous brother the mk10 or 420G when BMC-Leyland bought the controlling shares they re-named them. I've owned a 1965 4.2 litre mk10, for 9 years, when 19, after 5 yrs ownership I bought a super rare series xj6 4.2 Long Wheelbase car , as out of 98,000 series 1's only 2600 body shells were the LWB cars , owned it 32 years and sold it as I bought 10 years back another 1 owner 50,000mile 1967 420G (mk10) . ALL 3 were sought out the 2 x mk10's were the ultra high output bronze head(engine) basically race spec engine , the 1973, but completed 1974 LWB 4.2 xj6 was a custom order car too built by Jaguar Racing division . With the UHO bronze engine heads , they have beyond 300 horsepower, I'm a doctor, the 2 x mk100's were also owned by doctors,. I love the drone from the factory stainless steel tuned exhausts , in 2nd gear they have a wonderful , powerful drone that makes the spine tingle , and , life worth living .
Yes! Perfect colour combo and great example. Better than any Aventador or Chiron. So much more class, and being driven how it should be. Congrats from the UK!
You are right, I love my aventadors or chirons but I would pick the E type all day, just as you say its way more classy and baller to drive an e type then a aventador or chiron.
Numbers matching, overall great condition (with a few imperfections) AND in British Racing Green! This is now the crown jewel in your collection, hands down. What a purchase!
Getting that "one thing" that just puts you over the moon is such a wonderful experience, it really is, and I'm so happy for Hoovie that he gets to experience that with this wonderful car!
There is just something about an old Jag. I'm a Mopar guy at heart, but I love every jag I've ever had my hands on from the 60's up to the early 2000's. They are just full of so much life, and charisma. They feel like they have a soul of their own, and some people just connect with those souls on a molecular level. There is just no explanation other than feeling it for yourself. I truly pity those who haven't, or can't feel that mesmerizing connection.
I generally don’t get excited about old cars, but the Jaguar here is an exception. Hoovie, your excitement is contagious, and I’m right there with you on this old girl. The meticulous records, the patina of a machine well loved and maintained are simply astounding. Congrats to you and I’m excited to see the follow on videos around this beautiful car. Cheers.
This brings back memories. I had a clapped-out '62 in 1971. Ownership was a long sad story, but as a driver, it was so controllable. As a friend of mine said, with the power and narrow tires, you could dial your drift angle in to the degree. Beautiful noise from the inline six. Finest British craftsmanship: an electric fan blade broke off. If I could have one car back, this would be it.
Holy cow Hoovie, you keep buying cars and I think “this is definitely my favorite of your fleet”…. And then SOMEHOW you get something even better. What an amazing machine! Props on the camera work too, those drone and in-car shots look great!
Thanks Tyler for your respect to our beloved HRH Queen Elizabeth II. We in the UK (and I'm sure the rest of the world) are still very stunned by her passing as the majority of us have not known anything else in our lives to be so consistently present.....The E Type is beautiful. My uncle used to own a V12 in Cherry red in the 70's if I remember correctly, it was gorgeous but I don't think he owned it for very long as he soon started a family after having it and got a Volvo 120. I actually remember seeing a few mkI's on the road in the day....I was born in 1962. Keep up the excellent content you have a job to die for but sure you have put in a lot of hours to get to where you are today. Well done and thankyou.
Wonderful. Simply wonderful. What an incredible car. My grandfather had a series 1 and my uncle still owns it. This video brought me so much joy. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm with us.
once they worked all the bugs out of the engine. They were notorious for unreliability. The triple carbs were brutal to sync properly. Read up on Jag's first foray into the US market.
In the first few minutes, in your garage, i realize that you now own *two* of some of the most beautiful cars EVER made. This Jaaaag and then upstairs, on the lift, that stunning C2 Stingray, one of my favorite cars ever built. Yes, i am officially jealous.
What a machine, they are certainly a unique driving experience, far more modern to drive than you would think but still old school feeling, the smells and sounds etc. They last much better when they are used properly, got nice and warm to blow out condensation, taken up in the revs to avoid carbon build up etc. Beautiful
Tyler - This is my all time favorite car ever....I'm so excited and envious at the same time. I also realized that now you have owned all of my dream cars at some point. This is without a doubt one of your best purchases, I don't understand why someone would let it go at that price, if they listed it on BAT with all of that history, they would be looking at 6 figures, easily. This was the perfect video to use the drone for the overhead shots, amazing footage ! What a great Jag !!
That was by far your most honest deeply feeling Video you did! Somebody made you a gift! Maybe this is the car for your grandkid like your grandma gave you her sl! And this kid will have all the history about this car in maaaany long years plus this video you being young and having the best time of your life! How beautiful is that! Really loved watching the video!
You own a lot of nice cars Hoovie, many of which I'd love to own myself, but none more so than this absolute beauty! Congrats Hoovie! I hope she's a keeper!
I watched this with a tear in my eye. My maternal grandfather had a Series 3, v12 hardtop. He passed away at the age of 42 in 1972 and the car was sold. These have always been my unicorn car. I hope she gives you years of enjoyment and that the fun never stops.
Jaguar's reputation plummeted during the 70's for all sorts of issues...but owning 3 Jaguars...I think they are very underrated. Awesome cars that can be bought for reasonable money.
I have to agree. I owned a 2000 XJR for ten years, with very few issues. At 45,000 miles the instrument cluster had to be replaced due to a defect. Other than that, only routine maintenance. I loved the power of that small supercharged V8 and luxuriously appointed interior. I’ve loved Jags since I was a kid and would love to get my hands on a 60s vintage XK.
100% agree, on my 3rd Jag as well and I've been in love ever since the 1st one. Not perfect cars by any means but no car really is, they do have a way of feeling special though and that's what really matters.
"Bookends to the Elizabethan era." That statement alone qualified my subscription. This E-Type is the business from every angle. Congratulations, and "Cheers, mate!" 🍻
I drove for a car leasing company in 1972/73 and one of our customers had the V-12. It would sputter and stall all the way to the dealer for a tuneup and sail and scream on the way back. Total fun!
I am 69 and this has always been my dream car. I even built a model of it for my girlfriend back in 1977...she has been my wife ever since! Upon retirement in 2009, I treated myself to my first Jaguar...a near-new XK convertible with only 10,000 miles. I think it is the best looking car of its time, and the E-Type is still the best looker of all time! Congrats Hoovie, yours found the right new owner. Hope you make it a keeper!
Nice. That book you've got is by Phil Porter. He and I and another guy started the Birmingham area 7 of the Jaguar drivers club back in 1974. I love to see you young guys getting excited about these cars. We were lucky. Back then , when I was 23, all these wonderful cars were cheap. I had a 1967 which cost £800, an XK 150 bought for £475 and an Austin Healey 100/4 for £275. Unfortunately, we didn't appreciate the potential value, just drove them for the fun of it. But perhaps that was the best way. Have fun !!
Your best car purchase for a long time, beautiful! You don't have to do a full restoration but it would be lovely to see the rust spots sorted to preserve her and fix the hood, just a staggering looking beauty ❤️
Been here since the virtual beginnings of your channel and seeing this progress and watching you enjoy your dreams... it's an honor Tyler. It truly is. Keep it real buddy.
I'm 57 and my brother who is ten years older than I am had a 1971 Hemi Road Runner and when I was about ten, approximately 1974, we were driving home from a local car show when a woman in an E-type Jag passed us doing about 100mph on a 35mph street! At the next stoplight we pulled up next to her and my brother goaded her into racing to the next stop sign that was approximately two miles up the road on a 55mph section of open country road with wheat fields on each side of the road. Of course the Hemi had an advantage off the line and we never even looked back to see where the woman in the Jag was at, but to this day I will never forget how beautiful that E-type Jag was!
I was about 20 at the time and it eclipsed all previous favourites and still is for me the most desirable car of my life time of 80 years. A Tesla cruised smoothly by me on the Albany Albany Highway here in Western Australia today and I thought, that's nice, but I can live without it. It would have been harder to let it go if had been you cruising past in that EType!! Well done and may you enjoy it for a long time.
First off, a major congrats on this one. A true dream car for the genuine enthusiasts, and I can tell that the magic is not lost on you. But the history that accomapnied this car is the icing on the cake - it makes the whole experience that much more personal and powerful. Beautiful, and I hope you enjoy it for many many years to come.
This was a great episode! One of my favorite cars and I loved how much you enjoyed it! It was an engineering and design marvel at the time, a direct descendant of Jaguar's Type C and D racing program with quite an impressive racing history of it's own. A truly phenomenal automobile. And I completely agree, the late Series 1 E-types were the best ever built. If you ever decide to part with it... yes please.
congratulations, what a car! I have been around them since I was a child - they're such good cars. make sure it stays cool, keep putting oil in and it won't let you down!
Can imagine, Wizard: "it's a rust bucket, unsafe, better to sell it for parts or face a massive repair bill". lol. Hope not though, amazing car. So well cared for.
Stunning car. The 4.2 will never be as valuable as the 3.8 but in many ways it’s the more reliable and usable engine. My Father had an S2 in sable which I helped him restore when I was younger. Always remember rides to school in it.
That's in great shape given it's age and the mileage. I'm glad it was taken care of but also used as a car rather than a driveway queen. Nice find, Tyler!
Tyler, as a subscriber to your channel, I am alway happy to see you acquire a fine automobile like this Jag. Most RU-vidrs own cars for a short time and very few buy iconic cars like you do. So I am never jealous, because you always include us in your experience. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing this, Hoovie! You have a unique way of making us youtube viewers happy for your happiness and love for these vehicles. So happy for you man, enjoy that wonderful piece of automotive history!
❤ Naugas have been extinct for years now. Can’t get Naugahyde any longer. That interior is a keeper! In all seriousness, you should keep this Jag for a long time. Some day it deserves a full restoration because that rust never sleeps. Great find. 👍👍
I am late to the game here. This came up in my feed recently as new to Hoovie. Absolutely love the car and the man that now has it. I had a 2+2 version and got a lesson in Jaguar engineering. I turned my own wrench's and the car had a slipping clutch. I bought the factory service manual and the first instruction was to remove the bonnet, followed by the radiator, loosening the front torsion bars and removing the motor and trans as a unit. Just a little more clearance on the firewall to cylinder head would have allowed trans removal from underneath. And the odd discovery was that the throw out bearing was a carbon disc that wore each time you depressed the clutch pedal. I paid attention to the instructions to put the car in neutral at a stop light without depressing the clutch. Possibly the most beautiful car on the planet.
Brilliant video, she's a beauty. I was a principal engineer for Jag for 31 years and live about 250 yards away from where it was made. Get the rust sorted as soon as possible and get the seats retrimmed. There are lots of bits you can source in England for e-types. The rest of the car is original and is easily sorted . Look after her and give her a kiss from me. Terry x
Drove one of these for a month since my buddy own a foreign car shop!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Can’t compare it to ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE DRIVEN, AMAZING SHOUILD HAVE BOUGHT IT. Big UPs Mr Tyler🤙🏽
Finally, an E Type video where the driver gets on it! Thank you for rekindling my memories of owning a 66 XKE back in 1968-69 and the street wars of that time.
In my younger days, I got to help work on and drive the 400th six cylinder E type made in new zealand (all documents were with it, made interesting reading). It was raced at Ardmore aerodrome, when they held races there. The owner had it maintained by a mechanic who had trained at Jaguar in England.
No, that is when you drive a Jaguar saloon, in an E Type, you bed the babe and sneak out in the middle of the night so she gets the hotel bill including dinner and breakfast whilst you are long gone! 😂😂😂
Patina is nice, but since this is a repainted car already, I would replace all the rotted seals and then do a full strip of the paint and proper repair of the metal before giving it a respray in the original British Racing Green. I know this thing will be staying in the garage and not exposed to rain, but you need to preserve this work of art from from those threatening rust bubbles. They're minor now, but that can change. On a side note, this would be a terrific candidate (and great RU-vid content *wink*wink*) for dry ice blasting of the underside and oily engine compartment.
Welcome to the team...I only have two classics in my garage but carefully selected to enjoy...R107 300SL and e-type S1 3.8 FHC...both very nice cars to drive and enjoy but so different ways...and it's hard to believe that both, R107 and e-type, were on production at the same time in "70s!
Only scary thing is the brakes. Also, if you forgot to latch the bonnet down properly and it flies up when stopping at the lights... That might explain the marks on the front at the bottom.
One of my favorite cars ever. I lust after the E-Type hard top/coupes. Love watching these on the Goodwood Revival stream last weekend. Such a great car, great sound, great look, just everything about them. Even the "will it start" makes it so wonderful. Congrats Tyler on classing up the collection a bit more! Oh an one more thing, do you mind paying for this? I left my wallet in the JAAAAAAG!
Congratulations Hoovie. All you need now are some brogues, a tweed jacket and a pipe. What a jaw-dropping find. I totally understand your enthusiasm. Australia
