Totally worth a mild restoration. Stop the cancer before it gets way out of control. Remember paint hides all sins !! The world's most beautiful car of all time deserves a $10K paint job and body repair.

Yeah that outer door skin is already done for, by the time rust is poking out through the paint all the way along like that it's probably too far gone to bother trying to patch if you want a decent result. Hard to tell on camera but the rest of it looks salvageable without going OTT, if it's done right now.

I've owned a whole lot of cars but my '1966 E-Type Roadster" was one of the top three most memorable and it was undoubtedly in the top two of the most beautifu. Even after 50+ years, these cars still look fantastic. I purchased my '66 in Germany while stationed there in 1969. It was on my base with a "FOR SALE" sign so I contacted the owner and traded him my 1969 Simca 1200S plus $350. Being 23 years old and driving a Jag around Germany was unreal and I loved it. I shipped the car to New Jersey where I was discharged from the military and drove the car, without incident across the USA to California. That was one of the most memorable times of my life. The top was down the whole time. Stopped in Denver to visit a buddy I was stationed with and spent nine days with him. The long and short of the story was I found out why Jags have the reputation they do. As beautiful as they are, they are crap for reliability and maintenance. Rust, electrical, mechanicl and structurally they will get you and get you good. The "fun" factor gets a score of 100 when it comes to driving them. The "looks" factor gets a score of 100000 when looking at them. The score of maintenance is truly "off the charts" as you will soon find out. To own one and maintain one has to be a labor of love that is blind. I found out very soon in 1970 that I couldn't afford the car so I traded it for a 1969 L-71 427/435 Corvette with under 4000 miles. I still own and drive that same car today. It's every single bit as good looking and it's very maintainable. My 'Vette has 180,000 miles and is still going strong. I hope your "new" Jag gives you that much service. Drive it. Look at it. Enjoy it. I truly understand why people "love/hate" these cars. Can't wait to see what "weezard" has to say about it in three months. Best of luck.

Like many as beautiful, they are capricious. It's part of the magic. So wonderful and enviable, yet almost untenable no matter how rich and patient you are. A friend discovered a professional top consultant he sometimes managed to hire was selling cheap a wonderful 12 cylinder , his dream coupe. He was ready to sign a check after seeing the car. But in a moment of lucidity, he asked 'Oh, come on, why are you selling it? Where is the hidden problem I cannot find?' The affluent pro replied 'The car is perfect, no rust, few Kms, I am the original owner, but I cannot afford it'.

Any cars that spent time in the UK are just waiting to rust, badly. Salt is used on the icy roads during winter, not grit. The salt is paid for by the British Auto Makers Association, (or similar) guess why. They tried the same trick in NZ but were foiled by objections to salt ending up in our streams.
@louislazarus9253
@louislazarus9253 Год назад
@@howardsimpson489 These cars don't actually need "salt" to rust. Just water. If a company like Lexus decided to produce this exact car, I'd be the first in line to buy one. Imagine those "Hollywood Good Looks" with the perfection it deserved.

In 1961 on the road serious 1 E type 3.8 £ 2.089 Sterling .in USA same car $ 2.491 . to keep the price down there was NO under body protection so rust caused by just water eat away at them never mind in the UK they spread tens of thousands of tons of salt .as some one mentioned deliberately done so you had to keep buying there cars 😂😂😂

Hey Tyler, love the car! Me and my dad have a Business here in the UK specialising in all things E Type, restoring and repairing them so if you ever need advice or parts even let us know! I agree with what you say about original survivor cars, there is some magic you can’t restore back into them, nothing drives like a good E. Also I believe with your car being a US example it’ll have the lower ratio LSD making it more accelerative at the cost of top speed. If you wanted to check the body number there is a little tab behind the left hand boot panel with it on however it’s not un heard of for these to sometimes be different in true British fashion 😂. Best wishes Tyler you deserve all your success.

Friend of mine, (sadly passed away 2020), owned three E-types in the 60/70s. I went with him to pick up the first one, a Coupe. He traded-in his MGB for it. Car was at a dealers in New Cross Gate, London, and we had to get back to Basingstoke. So we drove back along the Old Kent Road. After about a mile he said to me, "Frase, I can't get it out of 2nd", to which I replied, "Oh No, is the gearbox knackered", to which he said "No, its just so fast !!"

There is just something about an old Jag. I'm a Mopar guy at heart, but I love every jag I've ever had my hands on from the 60's up to the early 2000's. They are just full of so much life, and charisma. They feel like they have a soul of their own, and some people just connect with those souls on a molecular level. There is just no explanation other than feeling it for yourself. I truly pity those who haven't, or can't feel that mesmerizing connection.

Hi Tyler, from Sydney, Australia I'm glad you have found this Jag , now a 66yr old I have driven a 4.2litre Jaguar since I was 19yrs old, so a while now. AND THERE IS -NOTHING- like a 1owner LOVED 4.2litre e-type, or, it's big monstrous brother the mk10 or 420G when BMC-Leyland bought the controlling shares they re-named them. I've owned a 1965 4.2 litre mk10, for 9 years, when 19, after 5 yrs ownership I bought a super rare series xj6 4.2 Long Wheelbase car , as out of 98,000 series 1's only 2600 body shells were the LWB cars , owned it 32 years and sold it as I bought 10 years back another 1 owner 50,000mile 1967 420G (mk10) . ALL 3 were sought out the 2 x mk10's were the ultra high output bronze head(engine) basically race spec engine , the 1973, but completed 1974 LWB 4.2 xj6 was a custom order car too built by Jaguar Racing division . With the UHO bronze engine heads , they have beyond 300 horsepower, I'm a doctor, the 2 x mk100's were also owned by doctors,. I love the drone from the factory stainless steel tuned exhausts , in 2nd gear they have a wonderful , powerful drone that makes the spine tingle , and , life worth living .

I am late to the game here. This came up in my feed recently as new to Hoovie. Absolutely love the car and the man that now has it. I had a 2+2 version and got a lesson in Jaguar engineering. I turned my own wrench's and the car had a slipping clutch. I bought the factory service manual and the first instruction was to remove the bonnet, followed by the radiator, loosening the front torsion bars and removing the motor and trans as a unit. Just a little more clearance on the firewall to cylinder head would have allowed trans removal from underneath. And the odd discovery was that the throw out bearing was a carbon disc that wore each time you depressed the clutch pedal. I paid attention to the instructions to put the car in neutral at a stop light without depressing the clutch. Possibly the most beautiful car on the planet.

One thing I think is key to the beauty of the design and proportions is that it has an amazing long hood, big engine, great trunk, and seats two. Other cars try to wedge in a couple of small rear seats to make it more 'functional'. The E-type was made for 1-2, not a family. It is functional for a certain market. Don't try to reach a market, and make a car that is a compromise. It is, what it is. (early Corvettes, too?) The chrome strips from the cabin to the headlights, on the top of the front qpanels is an amazing touch, too. So subtle, so sublime.

I have the honor and privilege of having purchased a SII 69 FHC (BRG/Biscuit) 3 years ago and understand Hoovie’s enthusiasm. I converted to triple carbs (makes a world of difference in my opinion). I agree with Three D printed Marine above, repair the rust, the metal used was inexpensive 20 gauge mild steel and will continue to dissolve. I’d also replace that convertible top rubber rot and other exterior seals. For example, my headlamp seals didn’t even come off in one piece, they simply fell apart upon converting from sealed lamps to H4 halogens. As it applies, I elected to refurbish and reinstall the original headlamp buckets, etc., having purchased aftermarket new parts and appalled at the shoddy quality. Finally, little details, install the vinyl along the interior base and get rid of those hideous vinyl seats, easy and rewarding fixes! Great buy, I’d have sprung in minute at that price!

Dear Tyler, I'm so glad I came across this video, as I'd run out of Car Issues on MT and was considering reruns! I appreciate your love of cars, the Wizard, and your history of the vehicle, all so humorously presented. Your comic delivery sets you apart from the rest of my favorite car shows on TV. The first car I ever drove at age 5 was on the lap of my dear late Uncle who was quite the Jaguar lover. That was in a 1953 XK-120 coupe in heather green with dark green leather. In 1961 he sent me from Philadelphia a picture of the new XK-E, in red, both the coupe and roadster. I thought they looked like jet fighter planes! Next thing I knew he had bought a new silver coupe with black leather. In 1967 he bought a 4.2 coupe also silver, but this time with a red gut. That car is still in the family with my cousin who is personally doing the mechanical restoration. , Weirdly, at age 73 I found myself recently building a newer and extremely detailed Revell Germany 1/24 model of a green 3.8 E Type roadster in BRG, with a tan interior. As a result of that, and researching the car on line, YT led me to your Jag vids! Although I'm sad Car Issues ended, it looks like you are doing just fine and I'm glad of that. My son who is 44 is looking to buy an F type. I named him after that favorite Uncle, - Chase George White Scituate, MA

Looks great. Just gotta be weary of that “surface rust”. Cars in England post World War 2 into the early 70s were being made with a decent percentage of pot ash mixed into the steel (because of initial “good” metal shortages after the war). This means the panels were also easy to shape and cheaper to make, but it also means they rust a lot faster than what you might be used to from any other cars.

My grandfather has a 1971 V12 e type that is in pretty decent shape. It has a cracked windshield and the transmission needs rebuilt, but there’s virtually no rust and the paint is in good shape (it’s white). I believe he bought it in the 80s when they had depreciated a bit. It’s funny to me because we are not a wealthy family, probably middle class at best, and he just has this priceless e type in his basement. I hope to help him get it fixed up before he is no longer around…

Series 2 did not have rubber bumpers. The fact that it had only 2 carburetors prevented it from overheating which was a problem with 3 carburetors in desert driving. The rocker switches on the dash were cooler than the toggle switches. Driving it was like being in the cockpit of a ww2 fighter plane. I was lucky to drive one across the USA with my brother in the early 70's. Absolute magic experience, Route 66. He left for Vietnam and I got to drive the car solo back to Chicago from Travis Airbase.

In the early 60's, I was hitch hiking to the Laurentians in Quebec on my way to a rock show, out of nowhere this tiny sleek car pulled up to give me a ride from Montreal to Saint-Sauveur where the show was. Well to my surprise, it was a yellow black top convertible, with the top down on a warm evening drive. I asked the driver if he tested how fast the car would go, and to show me, he stepped on the gas, and wow, did we ever take off; it was like being in a speed capsule, the highway being the line of operation, it was an amazing experience I will never forget. Today I own a XK8 Jaguar silver convertible, and when I'm on a highway, I get the same thrill as my first Jaguar experience, but like they say, you always remember your first. So enjoy your new speed capsule, I'm glad you're excited to own such a prized vehicle, like a Jaguar XKE.

I am 69 and this has always been my dream car. I even built a model of it for my girlfriend back in 1977...she has been my wife ever since! Upon retirement in 2009, I treated myself to my first Jaguar...a near-new XK convertible with only 10,000 miles. I think it is the best looking car of its time, and the E-Type is still the best looker of all time! Congrats Hoovie, yours found the right new owner. Hope you make it a keeper!

Old school documentation. I bought my 1966 Coupe in same colour and seats with the same provenance and even mileage records and mechanical calculations on torque and BHP output. I would expect it to have been converted for lead free. Mine needed a complete rebuild and it was a true labour of love. 😎

When you see that rust outside the pontoons be assured there is a lot more inside them. Fortunately you can get every part to rebuild the cars. Back in 1998 I did three rotisserie rebuilds of XK-Es, once you get the outer skins off the pontoons there will be rust, also bad welds, just keep cutting until you get to solid steel. I replaced floors, bulkheads, door skins, trunk floors. Back then the only part you couldn't get was the inner fuel filler assembly, which on one car we needed. By we I mean the owner and I, I did all the work. These cars aren't just pretty, they really go on the race track, the Goodwood Festival of Speed showcases some beautiful and very fast vintage racing E-Types.

British racing green. After the war there was a surplus of green paint so it went to the automotive and motorcycle industry affordably. As for the name. A British racer was asked about the color and he said British racing green. Not bad for color that helped Britain win the war.

My oldest brother is 18 years older than me. As a young man, he wanted an E Type... new! As a little boy, I vividly remember scanning the original 1966 Jag sales brochure!!! Sadly, the car was a no go, and the brochure has been lost to time. BTW, you will have to fix that rust. It will only get worse, and the nature of the monocoque, it will hurt the structure over time. Oh, sweet ride!! Love it!!

Another gorgeous car that drops your jaw and makes you salivate. My Dad's Uncle had a garage in Welshpool Wales. He was always buying exotic cars. In 1960 he bought one of the first E-types. Blue fixed head. My Dad already had a MK 1 2.4. A gorgeous comfortable quiet car. You can hear the electric clock tick as you drive and other cars coming up behind you. But it was not fast enough. Only a 100/110 mph on the new M1 motorway. Next came a hotted up 3.4 with modded engine and full extractors. Very fast. But a 2 year old MK 2 3.4 was available for a £1000 . So that was bought. I would clean it and polish the alloy covers on the motor. We would go for Sunday drives at an average of 100 mph. This is in Wales in the early 1960s, on ancient roads, with few straights left over from the Romans, when my Dad's work van Austin A40 was flat out at 70 mph and cruised at 35 mph. The aura and sublime mystique of the E Type was beyond any acid trip. They were the affordable opiate of the people. £1600/1700 new.

I once had a 1971 E-type Series 2 that I bought for $4100 in 1977. It had some bondo but drove well and was surprisingly reliable as a daily driver. I sold it in 1981 to finance grad school for $8000. I miss it, but they seem too precious now to enjoy without worry of getting car-jacked. I dont miss those spoke wheels that tend to break at the spoke's head and make it impossible to get the wheel off the axle without a day of hammering. Good luck with all of the surprises it has in store.

congrats for the purchase! You're missing the toolkit that goes on top of the spare wheel. The hammer goes inside that tool kit I think... E-types are awesome. So modern for their age!!

My neighbors had two jaguars. An e-type and a sedan, both V 12s. I got a short ride in the e-type (the wife's car) when she saw me walking home from school. Even though we were only going neighborhood speeds it seemed so fast since it was so low. I loved it. Her husband tuned them over a weekend once a month. He spent money but didn't want to pay for that kind of upkeep so learned to do it himself.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, when my eye saw the E-Type Jaguar, I didn't think it's beauty came anyway near that of a red Studebaker 1953 Champion. A car so striking that you never saw it in films of the day, for the reason it made other cars look like model A Fords. But it did manage a brief showing in "Back to the Future", just to the right of the burning tire-marks of the re-turning De-lorian.!

From years of experience at highest speeds there is really dangerous front end lift. So keep it sane and you will be just fine. Also note that around 120 tunnel vision from vibration may set in. Just back off a bit and everything returns to normal. Best regards from beautiful Arizona.

Usually when someone dreams about cars.. it means a type of ministry that the person is going through or gonna. Ministry a means of making money or special type of gifting. Truck=work type. Convertible = fast. Motorcycle = 1 or 2 people and faster. So different types for depending on the vehicle.
