You can often swing deals at the big box stores if you are patient, too. At my local Lowe's I had been eyeballing this large roll around tool chest from Kobalt. It had been out on the floor for months and suffered some minor but noticeable damage to one of the sides. Originally it was over $600 but they had marked it down to $500. Still it sat. So, one day I worked up the courage to approach the tool manager. I offered him $250 for it thinking he'd laugh me out of the store, but hey, nothing ventured nothing gained, right? Surprisingly, he countered with $350 and I told him he had a deal. Now, with my military discount that brought it down about the same as our tax rate here so in the end I made it out the door with it for $350. I never have bothered to fix the damage since it doesn't affect its function in any way.
The best place to get cheap tools is Estate Sales. I bought a Saw Stop 5hp Industrial Cabinet table saw with Biesemeyer fence for $300. (saw alone is about 5k new) It also came with a side table and Router attached. It also came with some starter capacitors and replacement brake cartridges. I got it home and only had to replace the Motor Start Capacitor (with the new one that came in addition to the saw) and it works flawlessly.
Great tips! Another thing to do is ask the sellers if they happen to have any other woodworking items they are selling. Sometimes they don’t post everything. I did this just last week when I saw someone posting a bunch of angle clamps. Got a deal on a rockler router table with a lift plate & fence. Along with dewalt router. All brand new in the box. $300. Yes. $300 for all of it
I'm really enjoying your channel. I've been "wood curious" for years, but have just now moved to a place with enough dedicated space to build a small shop. My dreams, of course, are bigger than my budget, so this was a great video!
Craigslist deal for me was a retiring woodworker selling off all his shop tools. Two delta drill presses, delta 20" bandsaw, powermatic 66 table saw with 54" biesemeyer fence, 3hp porter cable router, and workbench. All for $1,400. And recently picked up a grizzly 5hp cyclone dust collector for $400. Another area to get into for good deals is industrial 3 phase tools.
I haven't tried many platforms for tools, but I've built a decent collection of woodworking tools from estate sales. I got my first router, an old Craftsman, with table for $20. My best find was a Porter Cable thickness planner, hand (jack) planers x2, a rabbit planer, and DeWalt biscuit joiner for $200.
Great tips and guidance! Most of my machines were found this way. Actually just grabbed a basically new Jet DC1100vx off of Marketplace today for about 40% off-finally time for some more substantial dust collection. I've also found my 8" jointer, table saw, planer, bandsaw, and plenty of hand tools and shop accessories this way over the last few years. Patience for sure pays off!
Hi John I am also a Maker or wood worker in S.C. Pawn shops can be a gold mine for good used tools. My best deal come from out of the way pawn shops that do not have several close to it. Two most recent finds were a 349.99 dewalt brushless drill and driver with a 5 amp hour battery and charger for 100 and also a 159.99 bare tool at homedepot saw zaw also dewalt brushless with a 4 amp hour battery for 50. lot of time i find tools that look new and have a good battery that i have platform for and i buy them keep the battery and most of the time the price for the tool charger and battery is a lot less than just the battery and i sell on ebay or market place the bare tool and can usually recoup the what i spent on the whole kit.
Love getting used tool deals. Been doing it For 15 years lol some of my best that I can remember (10) 3/4”x7 1/4”x6’ walnut s4s boards $60 Dewalt dw735 planer for $100 w/xtra blades Old cast iron delta floor model jointer with extra blades for $100 Ridgid scroll saw and Paslode 16g nailer. $20 for BOTH lol A set of brand new tires and rims for my work truck $200 A big mechanics toolbox craftsman for $50 There’s quite a bit more but those were some steals
I prefer Craigslist for a much more robust search function -- and, no ads! Facebook search functions are wretched. They're inaccurate and hard to limit with filters, if you select results by time posted or closest first, fewer are listed. The application of filters is faulty. As you say, saved searches stink.
Awesome info...you say "...be comfortable waiting..."; my take on this, that I have taught my kids and others is "...don't get so far into a 'deal' that you can't walk away..."
Dude, you are a Jedi Master for good deals! I've never used CL or FBM, just the local classifieds. Thanks for the tips! When I was stationed up in Grand Forks ND I used to attend farm sales most weekends (not much else to do) looking for a bandsaw. So was everyone else in the crowd, and they all had a tool catalog in their hands to check prices. Used saws would almost always sell for within $20 of a new saw's price, and I gave up on that route.
auctions and estate sales are great, but they require a lot more effort. Auctions like hibids are kind of simple depending what's around you, but estate sale auctions like maxsold will require lots of looking around the pictures and reading descriptions. Estate sales are kind of the same depending on the company. I'm just starting to build my tool collection right now and actually bought a miter saw (dewalt don't know model yet), table saw (craftsman 113 series), and 12" delta drill press today for under 200. Not a big deal but it's within my budget
Hey John, greetings from the southern Left Coast of the USofA (transplant from the southern Right Coast ~ Beaufort). Just want to shout out THANK YOU for your enjoyable, informative, two-years of valuable woodworking videos.
I’m fortunate enough to live close to the largest Rockler on the west coast. I swing by every month. I’ve gotten a $500 bench dog cast iron router table top for $100. A $200 miter trimmer for $50. And a couple other screaming deals. I used bidspotter (jkm recommended) and got a Jet 750 dust collector for $300. Put a filter on it. $500 for a $1000 tool. But this was risky, had no idea if it worked or not. The only great deals I got on eBay were for used hand planes I restored. They weren’t great deals, just, great tools that worked well upon arrival and after an hour were perfect. That aside, I always check Home Depot or lowes. They randomly have Dewalt deals I swoop up. $100 router that’s $200. Same with the multi tool and impact wrench.
Used marketplaces and major sales at retailers have been the way I've purchased all of my tools and lumber (and re-sold to upgrade). All great tips, especially looking at other listings from the same seller!
Glad you liked it. Yeah, I need to do something on buying new tools. Although it would be a pretty short video. "dont pay full price, they go on sale every 90 days"
The best deal I've ever gotten was on a delta table saw. It was an older one from the 90s and would have been about $500 new but it came with a $100 extension wing, a $300 mobile base, a $500 Bessemer fence, and a $200 blade. All in all, the stuff put together would have been well over $1500 new and I payed $550 for all of it... I just happened to be on craigslist at just the right time!
Last month I located and bought two sets of tires for my vehicles. My Subaru gets new treads this week and my van will get new treads next year. My Subaru snow tires for $225 was awesome as the studs were barely worn.
Yeah that was quite the steal. I bought it with the intention of selling my 55 and keeping the rails. But I love the 55 and the 75 was cheap enough I’ll probably keep both.
I've been scouring Marketplace for months looking for deals and never really found much. I just restarted my searches by clicking 'local pickup' and also clicking their names as you recommended. There is WAY more stuff out there than I was finding initially, so thanks for the tip.
Pawn shops are another good source for used tools and, you can put hands-on for close inspection while negotiating a better price. I just picked up a DeWalt DWE7491RS table saw (in excellent condition) for $350 out-the-door. In my area that's a great deal for the largest job site table saw DeWalt makes. (New Subscriber... glad a found your channel!)
Hey, just found your channel via the John v John challenges and decided to check out some more. This video alone has made subscribing worthwhile in my book. Keep it up - loving your work🎉
Great tip about setting up alerts for places you'd be willing to drive to. I missed out on a guy selling a Powermatic jointer, Grizzly table saw, Grizzly band saw, plus clamps/whole-shop dust collection for $1,500! Missed it by less than 24 hours. :( I was just able to buy a Rikon 14" bandsaw for $300 though, so that's nice.
I just found this page also after binging 731 Woodworks videos all day. Loved this video and the other about what tools not to buy. I just got into woodworking and started with some nice Milwaukee stuff but I have been jumping on used name brand tools andi have so many things to use that I already can't park in the garage lol. I like the way you deliver the information. I'm subscribed and following 🤙🏽
Great advice on the "Is this still available?" inquiries. I buy everything retail because I'm lazy, but sell lots of no-longer-needed tools and stuff on craigslist. I make a point of never responding to "still available?" inquiries. They drive me bananas!
I used to post at the end of my ad: _"ad will be deleted immediately once item is sold. If you are reading this ad, the item is still available"_ I would invariably still get "is it available" replies & phone calls 🤷♂️
great stuff. i have done many of these things. Also pro tip, end of season sales at home depot or lowes. I got my T1 Delta Table saw for $380 out the door bc i was able to buy the "old" floor model that needed cleaning up. Retails for $600. And check out local liquidation stores. I have a local one here that sells all of HD returns, and got my Bosch Glider 12" for $325 OTD!
Gotta tell ya, nothing makes me more PO'd then seeing all the "ships tp you" ads on Marketplace...thanx for the info on filters, Just never thought of it before
I used FB marketplace last fall and found a nice Craftsman 10" limited edition compound miter saw for $60. Only thing missing from it was the lower guard. I'd been searching all over for the lower guard part and tried Craigslist this past weekend. Someone had posted the same exact saw for $40 just 2 days earlier. I went to pick it up and the guy had the original box, all tools it came with, original blade, as well as the actual manual. I now have my lower guard and spare parts should I ever need them.
Holy cow you got some crazy deals! I guess people don't research the value of stuff before posting. I've all but given up on trying to get deals on used stuff because people usually think their stuff is worth near retail value, if not more! When I sell stuff I usually try to get only about half retail and that's when it's in excellent condition, and still run into trouble selling. I guess people also hold out for deals of the century.
I've been fortunate in outfitting a good chunk of my shop with used deals. Waiting is the hardest part, but keep plugging away and stay vigilant. The deals don't last long so you need to be staying on top of marketplace and craigslist. I might do a video on selling used tools at some point. I've got a couple tricks there
"Buried in another post" is dead on the money. That's how I found my Rockwell table saw for free. Needed some work, but a wire brush, a little paint, and a new cord couldn't fix.
Grabbed a 6" jointer for $40.00, seller stated it was not working, it was in almost new condition, new blades , all cast, no rust. Fired right up when i got it home.... it was a loose wire on the power button...
We have a few websites here in the uk 🇬🇧 and if you Surf them yes you can find some great deals but you can’t believe the prices in after market tools even if the tools are brand new the Festools are good tools but they is a lot of plastic on them and why they sell for so much 🤔🤨 it’s like your battery’s 99% of them use the same battery inside which has been on the market for a long time it pays you to shop around even on new tools thanks for your video stay safe 👍👏👏
If you really want to save a bunch on craigslist be willing to expand your search area geographically.. I used to just search locally, but then expanded out to around 150 miles or more and bought a bunch of stuff 100 or more miles from home..
Are you kidding me? Those Festool hairdryers are incredibly rare. The retail price is about 1500.00. They double as wood dryers to dry exotic woods like Teak. You should have picked it up. Just the other day I picked up a Ryobi router table and router for 38.00 bucks on Craigslist. It will suit my needs for now. Eventually I will build a router table with a larger surface area, then I will sell the one I bought, and probably even make a profit. Great video.
With manufacturers struggling to keep up with demand, I'm finding recent auction prices exceeding retail, just because of availability. A $1400 jointer went for $1800, a planer went for almost $1000 over retail. I went looking for a deal and left shaking my head.
@@Lincolnstww Most likely that. Anyone with sense registered something as expensive as Festools can be. Once that number gets recorded at the pawn shop someone's going up the river if it's flagged as stolen.
Nice video and recommendations. I have been wanting a few Festool products and this seems like a more affordable approach. Never looked for them on these types of platforms but I am going to give it a try! Thank you for posting
James thanks for the comment. Check out this video. This is how I mounted mine. I love them ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zMYbMbTJdH0.html
@@Lincolnstww My pleasure. BTW, I noticed I could not toggle off shipping last few days on FB marketplace (or indicate local pickup). Maybe I've gone blind. But I did use that feature. Who would buy delivery from random ad? lol
Just learnt something new... Omaha is an actual place. When I used to hear Peyton Manning mention it, I thought it was somewhere in the Far East 😬 Anyway, another great review. Although Craigslist isn’t something we get in the UK, we can check local listings on eBay and Facebook (even though I hate it and don’t actually have an account). Keep up the great work. You’re a treasure trove of information! Oh, and totally of topic here... your thoughts on the Mandalorian?
@@Lincolnstww. I completely agree, Jon. It’s a really fun show and was much better than the last 3 films. I’m actually looking forward to see how they deal with the Obi-Wan mini series too. Fingers crossed.
Great tips! I list a a lot of refurbished furniture and I always say "click my profile to see other items I have for sale". I don't think many people know you can do that. I'm a new subscriber and am enjoying your content.
Good job fixing your mic. lol. I've done that before. You're a cool dude, smile every once in a while. Other than that, great videos. Been watching them for a while.
How do you like that JessEm router lift? I recently bought their dowel jig and it seems very high quality...now I've been thinking about getting one of their router lifts. Specifically, how are above the table bit changes?
@@Lincolnstww Yes there is junk you have to sort through but I've got great deals on many handheld power tools such as drills, drivers, jigsaws, and routers. And not just beat up Harbor Freight stuff but like items from Bosch and Dewalt that were like new(my two best finds). First key thing is to try it out as best you can before you buy. Ask to plug it in and fire it up, perhaps cutting on some scrap. Secondly if it's cordless make sure you can find a charger, extra batteries, and perhaps replacement parts for said tool. Sometimes they are only pawned because the manufacturer abandoned that model. Also, if you get multiple items they will often be willing to knock a bit off the price if you ask. One of my local shops even gives you a one week warrantee. As for the stolen part, pawns shops are supposed to log all serial numbers so local law enforcement can match them up to any recently reported theft. I was actually able to recover something stolen from a vehicle in a similar fashion.
How do you know if its a good price. I was looking at ad in my region. Guy selling its festool track saw 680CAD, brand new its worth 770CAD+15% purchase tax. (885$CAD) without rail. Looking through ebay sold item tells me its around what they are selling for.
