My favorite commentator, underrated.. Everyone talking about Gillian Clark and Morten Frost, but for me I like the way Steen Pedersen gives comment, very sharp and give us new perspective and dimensions about the players and the matches

I would love to hear Hans commentating in Bwf tournaments one day.

I chuckled when AA shifted uneasily in his chair when Steen mentioned that AA hasn't had the best of years in recent times. Often times, its the honest feedback that enables us to grow. Hope to see AA win many big titles in the years to come!

BWF is struggling to find a new commentator as iconic as Steen, Gill and morten. Not sure why, but wtaching badminton without being commented by one of them is never the same.

BWF can introduce something like Beyond the Grid in Formula 1 and some Netflix series for some of the biggest tournament like all england or world championship as Netflix has played a major role in making Formula 1 popular across the world.

Yup! Other athletes have vlogs but they don't discuss badminton deeply like you do, guys. This episode is so good and gives me so many insights and there sould be part 2. *Anders loves to ask very cool questions and I love it.

I think it would be cool to have analytical breakdowns of professional badminton! A lot of fans probably aren't playing at a level where they can fully understand the tactics used in professional matches, and thus it is harder to fully appreciate the match! A lot of other sports have post-match breakdowns and analysis, and I think that helps a large portion of the audience to feel more in touch with the sport. It would be cool if the commentators had their own post-match show where they discuss the games after and have a holistic breakdown vs the point-by-point commentary :D

Really interesting episode, I very much enjoy hearing from Steen as he is extremely insightful and well spoken. I would love to see a part 2 and have him come back on. Hearing him talk about technical aspects of badminton was a real privilege. I wonder if he would be able to explain the various ways that people at the highest level play and what differentiates their games . I understand some of that might not be able to be disclosed but especially for past champions and interesting play styles, I think it could make a really cool episode.

I have always enjoyed and look forward to steen's commentary for bwf's matches. His valuable technical insights and analysis helps give viewers a nuanced and deeper understanding of the game 👍

Personally I like commentators that explain decisionmaking of players or explain why a player is struggeling/doing well at a certain time in a match or explain behind the scenes stuff. I know it adds flavour but I don't really care for things that I see on my own screen: "great smash!" "Ye I can see it and I also hear the audience going crazy"

We need part 2! It's a totally different point of view in badminton we see in your podcast. One hour just isn't enough😁

As a newbie who digs deep into the badminton thing, I’m glad to discover one of surely the legend's commentators and tune in for an hour. It’s never a waste listening to all of u guys after all!!

ohh, I'd definitely love some kind of radio. I've been at the All England in 2016 for five days, which was epic! But i missed the commentary. What I also would like to see during the games, are stats like how fast the shuttle went over the net when someone gives it a full power smash. It would generate more ' WHOA' moments. And then during breaks some more statistics. There were times that the stream would sometimes show the shuttle placement for shot winners. But then that was gone in 5 seconds, and it showed only one player, instead of all.

I was very excited to see Steen in the podcast. I always enjoy his commentating. It is insightful and reveals to me what is going on in the game that I have not noticed. Love the rich information in this episode.

Another great episode, Steen was a really amazing guest, truly a legend and ambassador for our beloved sport. Also the duo of Hans-Kristian being respectful, polite and professional, whilst Anders tends to be cheeky and impulsive with his questions and comments is really entertaining 😜 the honesty and stories from you both are really refreshing, I completely lol'ed at the Anders Vs HK time wasting story! Really wholesome and hilarious! This is the kind of insight that exists but rarely reaches fans as content! Keep up the great work, by far my favourite channel at the moment 👍😎👌

Great episode guys! 😊 Always amazing to hear what Steen has to say. To make badminton into a truly global sport, there's so much we can do but I think we do have to shake off its image as a niche sport that is dominated by Asia by making it more inclusive at all levels. Marketing is certainly fueled by potential revenue so the more countries that are watching the sport, the more financial reward available to grow the sport. For example, continuously adding new camera angles or providing detailed informational graphics on tv streams would help (ie: always new camera angles and graphics in F1 every year) the sport embrace new fans who are new. Imaging getting Steen to draw overlays on screen with arrows and zones, breaking down tactics like we see on football streams for a few minutes after each match on finals day??!! I'd love to see that 🔥 Also I know from my channel that viewership is male-dominated so if we can increase female participation/viewership, the sport would also be in a better place. There so much we can do to help the sport we love! Looking forward to catching up with you guys when I next see you both, and Oliver too! 😊✌

In cricket, there is a lot of infographics shown on the pitch whenever there is a break. For example, where did the bowler ball most of the times, where does the wickets come from, where is the batsman hitting his 1s and 2s and 4s and 6s. I would love to see on my screen, where does LZJ hit the shots, how many times he clears from the backline or crosses. It does require a big budget, but it's fun to see.

The right choice to interview .. was always wondering about this voice

Something overlook is his sense of humor. Using Hype-talk , statistics or fancy reactions don't do much for me if the commentator don't know what is going on in the court ( or in the heads of the players ) during the key moments. His input is so valuable and he understand the nuances of each category. There is reasons why Gil ask him his opinions when there is a change in momentum in a game or describe the challenges players have to deal with depending of the profiles of their opponents. In other words he rise the IQ of the show and complement well the other commentators, something I don't see in other sports.

Great podcasts, I enjoy listening to these while I'm working. Would be good to discuss other disciplines more, you could get someone to quiz you both about WS and doubles, winner gets to go to the Olympics for Denmark!

Thank you guys so much for this wonderful episode! I never was much into podcasts, but you got me hooked on yours. I loved to hear Steen's side of what commenting on badminton matches looks like for him and I especially love his commentary, as it's so insightful. I learned a lot about badminton from just hearing him commentate on matches, which I hopefully take away a bit in my own game (I only play at lower(/lowest) club level). Would very very much love to see another episode with Steen. Also, any pointers on how to pronounce his name in Danish? As a Dutchie, I'd pronounce it differently from how they do in English I suppose..

I noticed Steen held his left hand behind his back for a long stretch; is that for a back problem I wonder? Anyway, another good podcast and I now got to see the person behind the voice - keep up the good commentary work Steen. You Morten and Gillian (btw I cannot blame Anders for misnaming her Gil) have your fair share of fans around the world. Your commentary has always been pure badminton and in fact you would at times be MORE critical of your countrymen during a match!

great great discussion once again. Creating video content with players is definitely a great way. I also would be very interested if badminton had a documentary or badminton-themed films or series. We have some films in Bahasa, and I know some badminton-themed Korean dramas, which I think are quite effective in promoting the sport in Asia. but it would be great if bwf could collaborate with Netflix, Disney, or whatever to produce documentaries or films like Netflix did with tennis and f1 to promote the sport globally. And also, it's great that you mention how singles are more interesting than doubles, but what I love about badminton is that doubles matches are sometimes even more exciting than singles and women's matches are as interesting as men's, which is rare in other sports. But I think you should talk about that in a deeper and more detailed discussion, although that episode would cause chaos in the badminton community, haha.

Just wanna say thanks for doing this, this podcast has been awesome. Sharing Steen's sentiment - I think you guys are creating something special, a voice of sorts, to hear and also to portray what us fans think of the game and ways to improve the game. Also agree with the notion that certain things could be adopted like what they do in American sports - mainly panel analysis. I think a lot of us would want to see some post or pre-game match analysis at least in the finals where more detail is talked about what went right or wrong in the match for players or if there was any intel on what condition they were in before the match or tournament taking place.

A truly insightful and constructive episode with Steen Pedersen, KUDOS! Follow up on the suggestions made during the podcast; assemble a small team of influential players as ambassadors of change to champion those ideas.

If any of you guys into motorsports, particularly Formula 1 from years ago you might notice this. A lot of people often dismissed F1 as cars going round and round for 2 hours and Hamilton win it. Or back in the days, Schumacher. If you're not the hardcore fans, you'd say it's boring. few years ago F1 commercial ownership changed and the new guys bringing new approach in terms of fans engagement and media access. they bring Netflix to the circuit and into each team garage (sometimes even their factory). they took a lot of footage inside and outside the race weekend. drivers life, team operation, engineering side, even to the point of portraying protagonists. then release episodes of "documentaries" of it in Netflix. suddenly the fanbase of Formula 1 was like doubled in an instance. I would not necessarily say we should take a same approach, but it's clear that we need more continuous footage inside and outside of the court. For example, recently I think BWF have released two amazing interviews with Kento Momota (on his recently difficult season) and Lee Zii Jia (on his independent/pro move). If you could build on that with interview with coaches, rivals, family/friend if possible, added with reliable commentary/narration.. that would become a real show, real content, and story that fans can talk about in-depth. And it's absolutely can be media to attract new fans even commercial engagement. players like Anders and HK obviously has their own podcast/vlog/media release, but it would be something different when it was official and properly cinemated. There's a lot of things to talk about in past few years. Momota dominance come and go, replaced with Axelsen's, rivalry between Akane Yamaguchi and An Se-Young, the rise of Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi etc. if we had enough footage we might be able to dig deep into the past. even something interesting that people don't realize like how Japan able to sign Park Jong-boo as their head coach and creating the golden generation of Japanese players, the Chinese way to dominate badminton in the past (and still is)... or how the Europeans tried to breakthrough the Asian dominance (for example Popov brothers as protagonist would definitely attract significant French viewers into the game, etc) but that's gonna need many parties to open up, particularly federation in each country.

Great episode guys! I still remembered when it was Asian Games 2018 (where they invited Steen as the world feed commentator) he didn't speak that often during the matches and I thought "oh maybe Steen is more suited as color commentator, he need someone to constantly supply him questions". But over the years as we see in World Tour tournaments, Steen is clearly more comfortable in doing solo commentary than before.

Now, this is EPIC!!@~1 Thanks Steen, for coming along to this gig. This was so stimulating, towards the end discussing what can be done to improve the marketability of the sport. One thing that I wondered about: Change the scoring so that the umpire/judges can see a video replay like Hawkeye. It's frustrating to watch umpiring mistakes (although this would not fix all the issues).

The most out of the box BWF commentator. As Steen said himself and what i feel, the other angle and perspective he added to Gill is out of the box. Just wondering why he never do commentary together with Morten or Paul.

Steen talking about being not biased... I think there also is a danger of overcompensating for that, like being overly critical or pessimistic or way too reluctant to praise (when it's in order, obviously) towards the one you're not supposed to be biased towards.

I would love to see you guys analyse a game and see what youre looking out for and what shot you would have rather played! great episode!

Echoing the conversation and also some of the comments below, my thoughts: - having players able to express themselves in English without going through interpreters - perhaps having other supporting programs akin to inside the NBA, even with steen or other retired world class players/coaches as pundits (like Shaq and Barkley) discussing and duking it out to make it interesting - NFL style stats, locations of points won, etc BWF needs to engage the sports marketing companies to make the sport more like a show and business, making it more profitable hence higher prizemoney which attracts even better talents

Great show, very interesting content especially on ways to market & develop the sport. There are a few things for me so I’m going to throw them out there. We have one of the most strategic, dynamic, fast & powerful sports in the world but that’s not the general perception to mainstream sport fans outside of Asia. To many our sport is a leisure time activity. More “western fan” knowledge means more media and more sponsorship etc. Speed guns for smashes and players movement as used for tennis serving & 100mtr sprinting would show the power & speed of our players. Pre & post match technical analysis would be very interesting. This is done in all major sports and is always well watched. Steen made a great point, in that changes to the pro game might not need to be implemented on the domestic game. This relates directly to the scoring system. It should probably be changed for TV as not enough different things happen in a 21 point set. Tennis has a brilliant scoring system for TV but so much for a general club player. I love watching badminton but I very often would watch the start of a set and then skip forward to 13-14 all for the more interesting points. Also BWF TV, 9hrs of a You Tube stream needs to be broken up per match or at least times giving in the info section of the times. Lastly, I personally get frustrated at the amount of time taken between points, walking around the back of the court, notice a wet spot to be mopped, towel down & then change a shuttle. Server & umpire should be the only ones to request a shuttle change. If a player has decided to take time before checking the shuttle the should be permitted to request a change. Umpire only. Perhaps a well promoted team event with LD, LCW, LYD, Peter & Taufik being coaches to up and coming players who play against each other for high value prizes on a reality TV show could ignite a general interest that was the mainstream explosion for the UFC with the Ultimate Figther Series. That was a longer reply than I expected 😀

I think there should be fewer tournaments and perhaps only 1 discipline tournaments that have more focus on the individual matches and players, I think there is an oversaturation of matches and not a big deal about individual tournaments because there are so many its kind of ok to lose

Look due to too many tournaments on the world tour, almost every week in the peak season, the importance of tournaments gets reduced. I want less tournaments but whatever tournaments are held, make it round of 64 at least so we can see more players and matchups. Currently we are facing the same matchups repeatedly. Make the tournament more like Wimbledon style, a tournament will last for 10-15 days with different finals days for different categories. Also the viewing experience in the stadium is not good due to all the matches happening simultaneously. I'll suggest making tennis like a court village, with different types of mini stadiums and play the finals in the centre court. This will give fans a chance to be closer to the action and opportunity to select which game they want to see in which stadium.

Anders, for your information, Son Wan Ho is doing good, still active in badminton, not sure why he is not really active in BWF tournament (except the Korea Open/Master)..but he is participating national tournament in Korea currently. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PV619zFtR60.html (Son Wan Ho defeated Heo Kwang Hee in team event 2 weeks ago) I understand Chinese, Bahasa, English and Korean.. so I do understand what's athlete doing if they share their information in social media or if there is articles. BL (badminton lovers) did some translation and sharing those information in FB group, twitter (their own forum) especially Malaysian and Indonesian did a lot sharing... that's why badminton is relatively popular in Indonesia and Malaysia.. For Chinese, they do sharing a lot badminton live with chinese comment, discuss about some technical skill in Chinese platform (Weibo and etc.). language barrier is one of the factors, hopefully there is more English contents.

I said it already for a long time. Make one big show (center) court like now at the Commonwealth games in Birmingham and put the big names on there, just like in tennis with one big center court and it's much better for tv viewers with no disturbence from theother courts. And make the 4 biggest tourrnaments to longer days to maybe 10 days, so you have a rest day after each match and the players will be fit and that wil get greater matches with more fitter players. When do you see for example at Wimbledon, doubles matches ??? Okay badminton men's doubles is more attractive then tennis men's doubles but sorry to say but women's doubles is a bit boring at times..... I even suggest at the 4 biggest tournaments to play for 3 winning games to 15 like at the grand slams in tennis, with maybe 5 minutes rest after the 3rd game. The 4 biggest tournaments should be something special....
