In the good old days I first flew BeeWee 707 from Piarco to London Heathrow it was magic. The Tri Star in this livery was classic and could be seen in London daily. Sadly the airline was run very badly and eventually became Caribbean Airlines which has never been in the same league as BWIA. Great video . Brings back so many memories.
This is one of my favorite videos. I only have sweet childhood memories of Bwee and this aircraft in particular. Back then travel was enjoyable and something to look forward to. To this day, nothing compares for me, loved Bwee tri-star service!
This jet was short but stout. I last flew on it to St.Lucia from Heathrow back in Dec 1994. I remember appreciating how big it was when we disembarked in the Caribbean.
An image that will forever be burned in my mind, getting to fly from Trinidad to Miami on BWIA’s 1st L1011 flight. Walking out of the terminal onto the tarmac before sunrise. Pitch black sky and a pristine aircraft all lit up. I was a wee little boy.
My 1st trip to the Caribbean 1993 from Zürich to Tobago via Barbados, St. Lucia and Trinidad. Excellent service on board tasty meal friendly crew. The flight was 5 hours delayed. For this BWIA offered us an island tour and a Barbeceau on Bucco Reef. The flight back to Zürich from Tobago via Trinidad, Barbados and Antigua was on time flight time ANU - ZRH 7hrs 40 min
BWIA West Indies Airways Limited, known locally as "Bee-wee", was the national airline based in Trinidad and Tobago. BWIA was, at the end of its operations, the largest airline operating out of the Caribbean, operating direct services to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Its main base was Piarco International Airport (POS), Port of Spain, with major hubs at Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) and Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) during 2006. It was headquartered in the BWIA Administration Building in Piarco, Tunapuna-Piarco Regional Corporation on the island of Trinidad
I remember flying on both the Bee Wee 707's and Tristar's in the early 1970's when I was a boy with my mum. She traveled throughout the carribean, north and South America for her sales job. Eventually in 1976 we moved to the USA from Trinidad permanently. I remember whenever at Miami or New York airports looking for Bee Wee's beautiful and distinctive original colors. I don't like the later livery at all. Bee Wee will always be the big "yellow bird" to me!
The BWIA Tristar was the first plane I flow on over 30 years ago, it was a great experience, and a great time when jet aircrafts had imaginative, name unlike today when every new machine is just referred to by a number. For example, if you was to give the A380 a name what would you call it? I think I would have given it the name of the "Mothership"!
LOL that was the name of the aircraft. All of BWIA's aircraft were named for different islands in the Caribbean or different areas in the islands. Sun Jet St Lucia was the name of this particular aircraft. If you look in the front by the nose you will see the name.. But the plane is actually landing and taking off from Miami International.
