George! This is my first comment on your videos so far, and think they are f****g awesome! I've been through other learning material, and this has been great. For the question "How long does it take you to get to Japan by airplane?" I wrote down "なんじ ひこうきでにほんに いきますか。”(excuse the spaces, didn't want to use kanji) Would this make any sense? Again, this video series has really cleared up some big things in my head. Thanks sooooo much.

How important is word order in Japanese? I'm asking because I seemingly always do the opposite to George. E.g. from the video わたしは バスで がっこうにいきます。 I would have said: わたしは がっこうに バスで いきます。 Bus and school inverted positions. I'd that an issue?

yeah, man, my wife is Chinese. Chinese language is really hard - the grammar is a lot simpler than Japanese thats true, but the lack of common words with Western language is a major hurdle in boosting your vocabulary quickly. And then there is kanji or hanzi as they call them. No hiragana or katakana crutch. Pinyin is sort of pointless as it isn't used in real life really.

You reminded me of this great memory. I met 2 adorable Japanese girls while they were on vacation here in Los Angeles. They invited me out for Japanese curry. I started to eat it with a fork as they used big spoons. The both froze, looking at me with surprise. "Ee! Why use fork?" I said, "I don't know. I guess because I'm American." They both put down their spoons in unison and picked up the forks, and dug into their curry. What made it cute and memorable was how much they were in sync. Like they'd rehearsed doing the exact same thing at the exact same time. Every facial expression, hand movement, and speed was perfectly timed. It's like they'd rehearsed it for a few hours beforehand. フォークで!

About katakana, it's annoying when retro games uses nothing but katakana! I read it slower than hiragana first of all and second thanks to the use of it I can't tell where english or other foreign words are used. Why did they do this? To help teach kids to use it or what? Sorry, I digress
@ShadowriverUB
@ShadowriverUB 7 лет назад
If you see game that use only one of two the reason is most likely memory limitation, and both hiragana or katakana takes twice as much of memory then latin alphabet (which also sometimes included too) if both included it makes 4 times more, it's also reason why don't you see kanji in old games or only first grades of it even in 16-bit era where a lot more space for them (note that modern games for kids like Yo-kai watch for example uses even high grade kanji but with furigana so kids can read it and in the way even learn it, same as manga do). I don't really know why they prioritize katakana over hiragana specifically, but possible reasons i can see is 1. game use a lot of english terms anyway 2. katakana being a lot more simplistic on way it is draw making it a lot easier to draw it in small pixel space that characters have in disposal

because 歩く is not a noun. あるく and いく are both verbs. and 2 verbs are combined into "あるいていく" This type of verb combination often occcur in Japanese. はしって・いる おしえて・ください かえって・くる しって・いる ほうって・おく etc
@ShadowriverUB
@ShadowriverUB 7 лет назад
Courtland gavan-glover て does not work like で particule, it is て-form of e verb, which is formulated same as た-form, but it used to combine verb with another word (in most cases another verb) sometimes changing grammatical form of first verb, like giving it continues form or whole set of "doing something for somebody" using give and receive verbs, it will be probably explained in future videos and this is just tip of a iceberg what you can do with it, it's most powerful form of a verb in japanese. て-form used alone means request (you definitely heard once たすけて help me)
