So there is a BYD engineer who is a serious Deep Purple fan to the extent that they tuned the door cables to Smoke on the Water? There is someone I would like to meet! Great as always Richard!
For when u mentioned that its annoying to use a screen for a simple thing like turning the fan off, there’s actually a button to do that near the centre console behind the gear shifter, just FYI
3:43 This is the kind of comment that puts off EV buyers because the amount of time to charge the battery on normal household sockets depend on how much range you use during the day. In my own experience, I use up approximately 60 km per day I have it fully charged within 4-5 hours using a typical 10A household wall socket. The full day charging is only applicable if you fully deplete the battery.
You forgot the third charging option a home walbox 7kw charger that would take 9 hours to fully charge the battery. The strange sound the vehicle makes at low speed is to warn pedestrians that the vehicle is coming along the road.
Probably worth mentioning that, with the exception of interstate travel, no one charges one of these from 0% - 100%. Most would plug this in at home, leave it charging overnight and that'll be more than enough time to cover the trips done that day. It's way more convenient having a "gas station" at home and having your car always running a full tank... unless you live in an apartment complex - then you're sh*t out of luck.
We've just cancelled our Atto 3 order (along with many others) due to the BS thats going on with the Australian importers in changing warranties and revealing super expensive ongoing maintenance requirements, at the very last minute before delivery! Its a real pity because we were excited about getting a BYD, we like the car, and think they are a good company, but the shenanigans going on with the Australian distributors has put us off completely! We wish BYD just distributed and serviced themselves like Tesla, and cut these middlemen jokers out of the equation! MG 4 here we come!
@@wcrash9361 I was on a live stream the other day where Tesla Tom took a vote, and over 50% of the votes said they will cancel their order, and there were more than 100 votes. That was just one live stream on RU-vid! I've already got 12 likes on the above comment I made in 30minutes! -- People are clearly not happy!

I have a Red reserved for delivery later this year. I'm holding on to my order to see what, if any, changes happen between now and then - but seriously examining the competition (MG ZS EV) in the meantime.
Mg4 is ternary battery; MG uses ternary Lithium Little disappointment, slight rip off in service resulting a massive change of battery fundamental warranty is still acceptable, Corolla is 5 yrs warranty; 4yrs warranty on major parts is acceptable although Not the best
it's the C word that manipulates them to act or talk in a certain way can't blame them honestly they grew up in such carefully crafted society that breeds such hypocrisy
Nice review, love this EV, BYD makes the best EVs by far and has the best EV battery tech in the world, if there is one EV brand to go for it's BYD, especially at this price, nothing else can even come close.
Overall a pretty positive review, but this reviewer appears to be new to electric vehicles - he doesn't seem to know about home chargers - single phase 7kWh or three phase 22kWh. Most EV owners simply install a 7kWh outlet at home and charge overnight in 6-8 hours. At my current off-peak rates that would be $10.14 to charge from 0% to 100% for the Atto 3, giving 400-500km range depending on driving conditions. Much cheaper than ICE vehicles. Thanks for posting this review!
You must me new to evs. Most ev charging worldwide is done at home on ordinary household outlets. 1/3 of the population here in Oz rent and they wont be fitting level 2 chargers. No problem. The average daily communte here in Oz is just 42kms, and that 42kms can be rechargered by an ordinalry Oz 2.4kw houshold outlet in just 3hrs.
@@nordic5490 all the Australians I know with EVs have 7kW type 2 at home except one. They have 22kWh. Perhaps because I don't know any renters with EVs yet? Thanks for your opinion but I have seen it from experience already.
@@nordic5490 I guess then that 2/3rds have driveways/garages then ? Mine is 100% SOC every morning. The old media doesn’t particularly want to see then end of their dealership advertising revenue, in a click n collect direct sales, minimal maintenance EV transition.
@@nordic5490 Maybe, but NOBODY runs their EV down to low and then leaves it for a 24hr charge, just journalistic BS, 2kW plug charger overnight gets 70 or 80 miles in , more than most folks commute.
@@bellshooter nope. A very quick google will tell you what the ave daily, ie, the total annual drive / 365 = The USA = 39.4miles = 63.3kms The UK. = 20.3 miles = 33.7kms per day Here in Oz = 36kms per day. The average ev electricity consumption is 20kwhrs per 100kms. The most efficient evs are just 15kwhrs per 100kms. Thus to recharge 63.3kms would require 20× 0.633 = 12.7kwhrs. Allow for 5% charging losses = 13.3kwhrs would be required per day. Using a standard level 1 2.4kw charger, 13.3kwhrs = 5.5hrs to replace that daily use. If you were a heavy user, and drove twice the national ave, you would still replace that daily charge used, in 11hrs, ie, overnight using a 2.4kw charge port. So, fine for renters. Renters can of course, also top up at a fast charger once a week when they are shopping. Ev owners who are also home owners will all fit a level 2, 7kw charger in their house. 7kw will replace that 13.3kwhrs in just 1.9hrs. There you go, renters and home owners can easily recharge overnight, and, renters can always top up @ a super charger if they didnt charge at home few a few days. Evs are the ultimate in convienience. Your ev can have a 100% full tank every time you leave the house. Too easy. Fyi, most ev charging world wide, is done at home atm.
Was so excited about my order for the Atto 3 until I saw the warranty changes from 7 years down to 6 months for some parts, 1 year for other, 6 and 8 years. And the servicing costs that are more expensive than most new ice cars. Just cancelled the order
LOL The "ghostly motor sound" is not from the motor... The motor is quiet, you were listening to the artificial pedestrian warning noise that turns off once you drive above 35kph. You can set it to music if you'd prefer.
Thanks for another good entertaining video. I have been told that Toyota have just signed & contracted BYD to make the new 100% EV Toyota Corolla for them!!!! That’s gives you confidence in the brand, Toyota would not do business unless they are a proven company
I was keenly waiting for Atto2/Dolphin but have lost confidence after reading latest update about the warranty and servicing cost. Trying to screw customers even before delivery is fulfilled. Switching attention to other incoming EVs now.
Love the clean lines on the exterior. I don't need an EV screaming like "I'm an EV!!!!" at everyone else. I wish they went easy with the interior. They don't need to try to look funky or different...
The loss of Traction is because the test car is fitted with cheap Atlas Batman tyres on very wet roads. Servicing costs are a mess at the moment, costing $3,100 over 5 years, and its more expensive to service than ANY car in it's price bracket. The warranty of 6yr 150,000 is not bumper to bumper like other cars. There are a huge number of exclusions and caveats in the warrantee (the infotainment is only warrantied for 3yrs). New Zealand gets a 6yr bumper to bumper warrantee and a 8yr Motor and battery warrantee with no exclusions. I have no idea why the Australian Warrantee is such a mess, and feel it may be in breach of Australian Consumer Laws.
Yeah, BYD is so stupid. They are all Integrated. Don't rely on anyone on the technical side and then they rely on importers. They should do it like Tesla with service centers. Byd that was a stupid decision.
In an interview I read that EVDirect admitted their service pricing was, in addition to normal costs, also structured to recoup their start-up costs. Of course that begs the question about what happens once those costs are recouped... nice tidy profit! As for the warranty, no idea why certain things are different in Australia except that someone is not confident about those parts and doesn't want to have to cover their cost, which is not a good look.
@@aussiejed1 about 40% revenue for dealerships is from services. In fact the EVs need much less services compared to the traditional ICEs, the AUS service plan is more or less of.....
atto3 is pricing 15% higher than mg zs in china and still outsells zs 5x. china is the most efficiently priced market and 60% of ev sold globally are sold in china. I'd take pricing and sales numbers in china as the best indicators on any evs.
Thanks for video. Have 2 question: does it have V2H charging? 1. Can I power my home with car's battery? 2. How many kilowatts does it take to be fully charged? Assuming 60kwh battery will take 60 kilowatts of electricity to be fully charged? Will appreciate your answers.
Just to add, that loss of traction is a worry. Probably need a set of much grippier tyres, no fun going around roundabouts in the wet, with the standard rubber. Appreciate putting in Eco mode may solve the problem.
The first question is does the cargo area go flat with the rear seats folded down? And the number 2 question is can my 7 foot surfboard fit in diagonally across the back?
It’s just basically for speed and a few other bits. The big screen is the main interface. My Model 3 has nothing there and I don’t find it a problem. Not everyone agrees.
The BYD Atto 3 has been delivered to early buyers in New Zealand. One buyer has posted a road trip video at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r8aGADt_vMs.html
Pure EV might be the future but for today, I'd choose PHEV, especially when you can't avoid hard winter and super hot summer when battery drops sharply when AC on. For this Atto 3 model, its prototype might be, if I wasn't wrong, the Yuan Plus 2022 model in China. The relatively short duration of the battery limits its market share, 400+ KMs seems OK in the city, but that's it. However, the 510KM flagship PLUS model of Yuan Plus 2022 offers you more possibilities to have a ride near the city. It costs around 165,800 CNY, or 35610 AUD. Song (5-seat) series is the SUV sales champions for months in China, followed by Tang (7-seat) series.
Can you please comment more on the high maintenance costs, short warranty period for some components, and on the regenerative braking of the BYD Atto 3? Thanks.
@@wgemini4422 No, the conditions are crazy… only 60K on suspension components, etc. The concern is not for consumables. The warranty may also be in breach of ACL.
I didn’t want to spend more on a Tesla but I’m not liking what I’m seeing from EVD. Will wait a week or 2 and cancel if the warranty and service costs are not sorted out.
Nobody really starts of their day with a full tank every day. You fill up a gas tank, it’ll give you say 900km and you’ll fill it up again when you are half way through (ideally). With these electrics you will plug them more often because the range is half of that of a petrol or diesel car. No an issue. Ranges will keep getting better.
Whats the go with the servicing costs? I always assumed that with EVs servicing costs would be absolutely minimal and not as regular, especially for the first 5 or so years? I dont get it.
I was excited until EV Direct did a bait and switch on servicing and warranty. I'm not buying an electric car to pay ICE service costs and intervals. Even ICE cars have gone to 2 year services. I have no confidence they'll honour warranty with the latest announcements
Is this all EV Directs fault? All seemed to be going OK until the Eagers Group was engaged as a partner. Being one of the largest dealer networks in Australia are they the ones that influenced the change in warranty terms and servicing costs, they have a vested interest in these areas. If it had of stayed with EVD and MyCar would these changes have happened?
@@pmccrohon yes, they're the BYD rep. so they are ultimately responsible whether they subby out their repair/warranty work or build it in house. Also note servicing costs in China work out to $100 a year.
I think for all you get for the price it's great value. It was disappointing to hear recent servicing price changes. But overall it may prove better value than an ICE vehicle of similar price.
please in the next review include the following: whether there is a baby seat system in place for the car, how about setup for mobile phone for those who like to use their own GPS app. The storage in the trunk anyway to expand it e.g. Toyota Yaris has a hard board where you can remove it for bigger storage place. cheers
Good value EV even with the rumours of 3k+ warranty add on.. in Singapore, the ATTO 3 cost over $180,000 due to our silly taxes.. nightmare pricing in my tiny state. 😢😢😢
I like the creative side to the car incl guitar strings and air con. They likely cheaper out on material to help keep costs down especially the tyres. Still better than the hard plastic on Toyotas. Fast charger is slower than Lexus/Hyundai/Nissan.
It will be interesting to see if BYD continues to put up with the the dealer distributor model that we have in Australia compared to other countries direct model. No doubt My Car warranty services issues will no doubt is the main difference with the car.
I think my old Panasonic cordless phone came with BYD branded AA batteries in its handset, I'm not sure if that's the same BYD or not, the logo looks identical. When I first saw the batteries, I thought they were made by 3YD because of the logo.
I drove one the other day. Sixt hire car. It took a little getting use to. But overall good. Used 10% of the battery. The inline map was not as good as Google Maps, The centre display was small and hidden. It was like Ice Skating,
Gunny how none of these reviews ever tell you that even bad only have an 8 year life expectancy on the battery. Thus the 8 year warranty. How much for the battery.
I have already ordered a set of Continental Eco contact 6 tyres, specifically designed for Evs to have fitted when my Atto 3 arrives. The tyres are $325 each.
the servicing costs for the Atto3 are a joke. It's more expensive than any other EV on the Australian market except for a Porsche Taycan. How about a reviewer that actually knows something about EV's.
* correction - some of the car is covered by a 6 year warranty, and some of the battery is covered by the 8yr warranty. BYD have s#!^ the bed in the last few days (including service costs being irrational) :(
The service costs are surprisingly high and the warranty conditions are alarming. I was considering one… now I absolutely will not consider it. I think BYD should dump their current distributor and sort out the warranty and service costs.
@not today The distributor has set service costs so they are higher than ICE vehicles. The warranty was going to be 7 years and now it’s 6. In addition, they have a long list of items that are not warranted for the full 6 years, some as short as 6 months. The exceptions are not consumables. Eg, if you have a suspension issue and the car has done over 60K you are out of luck.
@@GlowingTube That 60k km warranty won’t hold up in an Australian court. They’ll be forced, under consumer law to repair it under warranty until the end of the full vehicle warranty.
The bad thing I can see is that when Richard was sitting in the back seat the majority of his upper legs to buttocks was off the seat which puts pressure on your spine and cause discomfort.
They got the warranty incorrect, 6 years with many, many exclusions. Eg 1 year warranty on USB ports, 3 years on wheel bearings. Service cost is also > 3k over the warranty period.
Mate, their revised Warranty sucks and their maintenance schedule more expensive than my ICE 2012 Holda Accord. I ordered mine in Feb and yet to be notified of a delivery and waiting to know if EVDirect are going to make some revions as the push back has been huge.
I assume the 8 year warranty on the battery only covers the battery not working at all and will not cover the battery after a year or two only holding half the charge it did when it was new.
if we consider this sort of a version 1 of what byd are capable of doing, it'd be interesting to see what they're coming out with in 2 or three years. apparently byd's old cars were pretty terrible. this seems pretty ok, but logic dictates they onlyget better from here.
@@mingouczjcz3800 that’s a big statement. But yeah, there’s certainly been questions asked about Tesla’s alignment and attention to detail. I’m reserving judgement on byd quality for now.
Wish you could get more clarity on the limited 6 year warranty. It is not bumper to bumper warranty. Some major components like the infotainment console and the charging port assembly is only 3 years which to me is a concern. Wish BYD will consider a bumper to bumper warranty like MG which is similar priced
Most manufacturers warranty the whole car except for consumables. BYD break the warranty into many components with limited warranty period. The 6 year warranty does not apply to the whole car
I was just about to place an order until I found out about their recent warranty backflip. Sounds like they have no confidence in the product. Servicing costs are absurd. I reckon give them a year or so and they will pull out of Australia unless these issues are addressed asap. Nope - pass.
What are you talking about 2hrs on a public fast charger, on a 100kW charger it will take less than an hour as peak charge rate is 90kW as recently proven by a NZ Atto 3 owner as both countries have basically same car.
It's supposed to be coming to the UK before the end of the year - yet they haven't even set up a dealer network yet etc. I'd have this over the MG ZS EV (my ZS EV was the worst new car I've ever owned, dogged by faults and ended up rejecting it) and even the Ora Cat.
Get rid of the string and those horrible vent circles 😳 in the car, fix the traction issues (how did that get out of the factory like that?) and it’s certainly a nice car, interested to see the in car entertainment system in a full review, is it slow, does it get over the air updates. Car manufacturers need to stop making in car systems an after thought, Tesla certainly wins in this category.
