They came reasonably close in 2001. If they could have beaten Hawaii I think they might have managed playing Miami, FL. Unfortunately they were beaten resoundedly by Hawaii. That's a season I think Brigham Young might have been a challenge to a NC.
I would love to see that BYU team play Washington or Oklahoma that year and settle who was truly the best! Coach Edwards is one of the best of all time!
In 1985 Washington had every starter on both offense, and defense back and they were blown out by 30 in Provo Oklahoma was 9 and 3 neither of those teams were championship Worthy so any Washington or Oklahoma fans want to tell me otherwise let's hear it
@@brooklynsadler2292 That’s incorrect! Washington lost multiple starters to the NFL after the 84 season. In 86 byu was demolished by Washington…the point is 85 and 86 are different teams…most college football historians are adamant that had Washington or Oklahoma played BYU in 84 the cougars would have lost bad!
@@johnevans5434 wrong. Look it up. Oklahoma would not have beaten that team. They were either with injuries and Washington played a PAC 8 schedule of which 4 teams were weak as they come
@@brooklynsadler2292 Disagree! Both of those teams would have definitely defeated byu…USC and Nebraska would have beat Byu. Look at the talent that was drafted from both Washington and Oklahoma and compare it to BYU’s roster - enough said! Those teams in the pac-10 & big-8 (upper echelon to middle standing) would have been difficult for byu to beat!
1984, The Cinderella Year. What with BYU winning the National Championship and Doug Flutie tearing 'em up at Boston College; the best year in college football history. 1984 also points to the biggest flaw in the current National Championship Playoff scheme; there will NEVER be another Cinderella story in college football. Congratulations to BYU.
BYU was number one in the country by the Holiday Bowl. Instead of a game against number two they got number three. Bo Shembeckler stood up after the game to show what a good sport he was and said BYU wasn't a number one team. Instantly I lost respect for Bo Shembeckler. Well guess what coach, they beat your number three team.
