Everyone who learns piano wants to be able to play pieces and songs so why bother with scales? "Aren't scales boring and old fashioned?" "Aren't they just a waste of time?"
It's frustrating how many people try to learn piano without learning some scales.
Yes, scales can be hard work!
Yes, practising them can be boring!
And... yes, people have been learning scales for generations!
But, the reward for playing them is huge! If you practise scales every day for 5 minutes you will see a very big improvement in your playing very quickly.
That is because scales teach your fingers how to play certain movements that you will find in the pieces and songs that you really want to play - it's all about muscle memory!
If you want to be able to play a wide range of repertoire on the piano then scales are going to have to be a core part of your practising routine.
In lesson 5 of my beginner piano lessons course I am going to show you how to finish off the C major scale in both your right hand and left hand. In a previous lesson we looked at the ascending C major scale - now we are going to have a look at the descending scale. I am going to show you the correct fingering for the scale and how to try to avoid the mistake of the elbow swinging outwards.
The piece in lesson 5 has 3 beats in a bar and the right hand doesn't need to move out of position (although it starts on a D rather than middle C).
The tempo is walking pace ("andante") and it also requires some smooth ("legato") playing similar to that needed in the lesson 4 piece. The melody does not always move by step, but introduces some intervals to work on finger technique in the right hand.
Once again, a backing track is provided so that students are challenged to play the piano in time with the 3 beats in a bar time signature.
