If you or someone you know is dealing with a challenging situation and could benefit from additional support, consider talking to one of the 10,000 licensed online counselors at BetterHelp.
People with C-PTSD engage in particular behaviors. Many individuals with the condition have issues with substance abuse. They might indulge in drugs and alcohol to self-medicate from the pain of their trauma. People with C-PTSD frequently engage in self-harm behavior. They might hurt themselves because they want to feel something rather than emotional numbness. Another reason people with C-PTSD self-harm is to distract themselves from the pain of trauma.
Individuals who have C-PTSD struggle with self-soothing. They can struggle with intense anxiety issues, such as panic attacks. Their anxiety can feel overwhelming, and it translates into interpersonal relationships. They can worry about abandonment, and as a result, hesitate from expressing their feelings. People with C-PTSD might engage in people-pleasing behavior to keep relationships. If you’re living with C-PTSD, seeking therapy can help you. Working with an online therapist is an excellent option for you, especially if you struggle with social anxiety. Don’t wait to find ways to cope, seek out treatment and start feeling better.

True. Part of the cycle of this illness is that these problems can affect your ability to produce sufficient income and obtain health insurance through employment. You end up in a permanent deep hole and you can't get out of it.

I survived physical and emotional abuse as a child, two Narcissistic spouses and I am a man's man. These are the first videos I found that make sense out of the emotional chaos and self defensive reactions I have had my whole life. Senseless emotional pain is the worst, because of the struggle to make sense of it. I am 61 years old. Could you please cover how to learn to trust people again? I literally expect everyone to stab me in the back or betray my trust; all the time.

OldToughDW that’s a tough one..... I’m in the beginning of healing from 37 yrs of narc abuse. A lot of my work colleagues think I’m a tough nut, when in reality I end up in a big heap bawling my eyes out. I watch a whole lot of RU-vid channels which are helping so much. Like you OldToughDW it’s hard to trust anyone and my small circle and I mean small circle of friends know what I’m going thru. Good luck with your journey there are unfortunately NO quick fixes... I hope I learn to trust again..... I’m worth more and so are you 1 day at a time....you will never forget the hurt, but it does ease ..... I cry when it’s needed.... I’m angry when it’s needed....I’m happy when it’s there..... human emotions are necessary I think it’s healthy to experience them all. If you experiencing a bad flashback/memory I refocus and say positive affirmations straight after....calms me down a load. The journey is long I’m taking it step by step day by day. Blessing to you

When you've missed the five stages of development (connection) (attunement) (trust), (autonomy), (love, sexuality), you lose the capacity to speak your mind without guilt and fear its almost as if you have a mild case of ASD. As a result developing a survival style that may not be relevant in the current environment as a result of what didn’t develop in those five key areas. How can you feel something that never was taught in the first place. No foundation

Since I was mild-mannered and quite articulate I believe He suspected something akin to cptsd. Thank God he did some 3 years ago or I would not be here today. Yeah, I just watched another video where they mentioned it’s being talked about possibly becoming it’s own mental health category. I was young when I started experiencing symptoms of CPTSD (didn’t know at the time) & I didn’t have access to alcohol or drugs frequently when I was distressed... but I had food and self harm. I am finally free from my traumatic situation(s) and haven’t done it since!

How she explained the self-harm portion really impressed me. I felt very understood and even gave me more insight as to why I continued doing it to myself. I would totally recommend sharing that segment to someone who refuses to acknowledge the "addictveness" or reason behind as to why someone would start to self-harm.

Thank you for your videos. My little sister informed me yesterday she used to cut herself in high school to cope 💔. My mother is a cluster B personality. She inflicted a great deal of emotional and mental abuse on her and I. A vast difference in comparison to my brothers. It was and is a reality we live in alone. Suffer in silence with just us girls to validate one another’s experiences. She went no contact 7 years ago and has accomplished so much. A degree in psychology, married her high school sweet heart. Currently pursuing medical school. She blows me away all the time. I can’t help but feel so sad and crushed for her. My little sister suffered like that alone 💔. I want to go back to that young woman and hug her so tight. Tell her she’s not alone her big sister is here. My mother has brought me to the edge but to hurt so badly you cut. Emotional abuse needs to be more openly discussed. We need to be aware of these kids of individuals and the damage they cause to the people who love them. No child should suffer in silence like that. No bruises to show the hurt and cruelty has been inflicted on them.

Thank you for sharing about you and your sister. Being the youngest of 8 (6girls 2boys)with a twin brother, being raised with a chauvinistic mother & emotionally detached father; we girls suffered in silence (unbeknownst to our father)of psychological mutilation by our mother while we watched our brothers be praised like gods. Having the dynamic of being both the youngest (often forgotten about/lost in the chaos-neglected) & being twin to a boy (constantly being compared to/disregarded/achievements overshadowed) I unknowingly suffered and became so numb that i found comfort in self mutilation as well as my sisters. There is clarity in feeling the euphoria as endorphins flow through the body. There is a self-awareness that follows and from that we pull strength and spiritualism that we harness for ourselves as use as a tool for growth. The beautiful aspect about that is that since that awareness was inflicted (given) by our own self, no one has the power to take it away and therefore it becomes a source of empowerment to build with until healthier methods of self love develop. The reason i share this is not for sympathy or self-indulgence, but for insight. Coming from having some commonalities in our background & being in a much healthier space now, I see that you obviously care deeply, but still having sorrow and sadness for her evolution of self only brings more sadness, because her choice led you to have negative feelings. As absurd as that sounds, since we aren't responsible for anyone's feelings but own, there is still that guilt of feeling responsible. Also, that there is nothing that can be done to change the past which leaves a feeling of helplessness. It doesn't help to hold on to those emotions it only provides an avenue to revisit those destructive memories. Does that make sense? I don't mean to pick your words apart or belittle by any means, just to state that it would provide growth and acceleration to focus on the necessity of those experiences that she overcame to be the beautiful soul she is today. And in conveying that, substitutes the feelings of guilt & shame for feelings of strength & accomplishment. 💞

Amanda Lee Beauty what an apt name, beauty on the inside is evident, God bless you. Your post is so healing, would like to adopt you as my sister. The cognitive dissonance of narcissistic, psychopathic and borderline family members who are either overtly or covertly abusive: they steer you towards wrong choices in order to further entrap you when it goes wrong - because through Ignorance, you seek counsel from them. A lifetime of trauma, here I stand alone and isolated to protect my offspring. Yet my heart breaks for them... Deserving to be truly loved by a family, these are hard lessons.

Oh my god, you’ve helped me so much put into words what I’ve been wrestling against much of my life. I was feeling suicidal just a feel days ago as I couldn’t come to terms as to why I’d keep harming myself just as I was about to achieve something great in my life. I felt helplessly incurable. But I’ve been attending psychoanalysis sessions for over a year now and many of my symptoms have now subdued. Watching your video, though, has been a great help for my understanding the childhood trauma I went through: parenting emotional neglect, constant bullying at home and at school for being different from what society expected me to be, and the list goes on. Thank you for being so clear about this topic. I’d certainly make an effort and set up sessions with you if I were in the USA. Thank you all the same! Rafael, Brazil

With C-PTSD some of my self harm behavior was isolating, people pleasing with learning how to physically or intellectually fighting them if things did not go well. That being said, I’ve committed myself to treatment and with some medication, ACT/CPT therapy and learning my MBTI personality have really, really helped! (ACT - acceptance and commitment therapy, CPT- cognitive processing therapy, MBTI - Meyers-Briggs test (personality)index)

i didnt believe i had PTSD really until this week. a silly little argument spiralled out of control, not even an argument just a statement and i flew out, my mind spiralled and i was thinking about the trauma i had and the trauma i inflicted over and over, i starved my self from monday to yesterday and ignored my wife and our new dog in that time i was pushing her away and now ive got through it ive destroyed our bond. i cant believe it had to get to this point for me to see what it has done to me. i have an appt today with my GP and i will start seeing a therapist but ive collapsed an incredible 12 year relationship. this short video is clear and almost soothing in its hope that i can get through this.

Thank you for the wonderful video. Determination to be a survivor lead me many years ago to study many areas of human behavior through both college and university sources online but also informative videos such as this. I loved the comment how you enjoy seeing victims becoming survivors. When you've personally experienced the trauma and take up the fight to understand it the pain can diminish while the memory becomes a good motivation to continue and help others. I have found that I can put up a good fight for others and am administrator in a survivor's group online. It helps me to chip away at my own experiences while helping others...

What if we are approaching the problem incorrectly? If people are taking substances to relieve the emotional pain perhaps it would be a good idea to give them therapy in that state of mind where they have the strength to confront the thoughts that plague them. The brain needs to process traumatic experiences so that it can file them away. Until you let you mind think about these things, and let the pain wash through you, they won't go away. The painful pangs of memory will keep coming back if you push it out of your mind without meditating on it. The pain doesn't get any worse if you do think about it but it will diminish each time. I find Cannabis is a great way to meditate but it can you very anxious if you have PTSD and you may just think you don't like weed but it is because it is trying to bring things to the front that you have buried. Cannabis is a potent healing agent for the mind if you just lay back in a quiet room and think about your problems and solutions will find you when you do this bringing a sense of calm and purpose.

EMDR is a similar concept, without medication. It's about engaging the whole brain while thinking about the intrusive memories so the brain can process them appropriately. The limbic system handles trauma memories, which is why they're different and can become intrusive. EMDR...with weed? Very interesting thought.

Idk speaking from my experience (I want to say I'm somewhat on the spectrum of ptsd/ I have trauma/ I am a very insightful person, I have worked through alot of my pain, however its always there when you get thinking.) Cannabis had some really crazy effects to me. I am a person that doesn't get flashbacks but on cannabis they were there, I would hear the sounds of my child hood, feel weighed down really badly. However it made me realize I am more anxious than anything, I would get weed hangovers, and feel detached for weeks. Almost to a point of depersonalization. It's scary as fuck, like living in a haze, for me I feel high when I'm not high. I also had my body not agree with alcohol so I was testing weed since legalization was on the horizon and I never played around with limits before. Whenever I talk about cannabis and how it affects me it's very strong reactions. I think it's just important for people to know that just as much as it is there for them. Don't get me wrong, I love weed but it has to be the right amount, and I do want to try CBD.

Hi, I have a suggestion for a video. My partner has been diagnosed with C-PTSD and my suggestion is for any helpful tips for the significant other to support the CPTSD victim, and perhaps ways they can cope with the struggle to support the CPTSD victim. It’s so hard sometimes. Thanks for a great video.

I have been looking for a way to explain to my fiance how and why I do things and this has helped me understand me in a better way to be able to show this to my partner and start to express myself and get out how I am n why I react or respond how I do. Thank you.

Maybe you can go over how someone can help when interacting with someone with cptsd. Like if they are friends or if they are close. What are some things that someone with cptsd do that other people may not understand and what are some ways to be patient and try to understand?
