C-SPAN Cities Tour - Bellingham: Point Roberts, an American Exclave

Point Roberts, is considered a geopolitical oddity-part of the United States, but not physically connected. The town lies south of the 49th parallel, which forms the U.S.- Canadian boarder. Today, nearly 1500 American citizens live on the island. Hear residents tell their story about the challenges created by living in the area, and the consequences of Manifest Destiny and America's westward expansion in the 1800s.

This must be the most nonsensical border there is. I can't believe that the US government spends money to pay for 8 people to permanently staff the border check point there. This is a crazy waste of money. The end result is that everyone is inconvenienced at no added value.

I have visited Point Roberts a few times, as we had friends there. It is very odd, as there is very little there except for homes of the people who live there. As I recall a few places to eat. The canary is closed, and that sort of killed the economy.

I drove there before when I was doing a trip through Vancouver with friends. Its an interesting little oddity to visit. Not much there but it is definitely the United States. Its a small little town with a supermarket, gas station (and not that much cheaper than Canadian gas prices to make the trip there worth it), some other gift shops and homes not much else. It definitely is a great place to go if you still want to be in the US but be as isolated from it as you can get besides moving to some unknown parts of Alaska. Not even sure why the United States is still keeping the land though. It really is nothing special and you are landlocked in Canada. Can't get in or out without going through British Columbia. Just seems like its one of those old map disputes that we aren't budging on just because and no other reason to keep it. Was cool to visit though just out of a curiosity sake but it's nothing special besides being a quirky part of the country. I'm sure it has relocated people there or some other reason to invest so much into this square land piece that provides nothing else to the country but being a strange part of history that we even have it. They even have full boarder crossing and guards you have to cross through to get in and out of it. So they invest in this little square for some reason.

I agree with Mr.Ali Sabzwari.A ferry could be the perfect solution for this complicated transportation problem.By having a ferry service people won’t have to cross the Canadian border anymore.This was already done between the states of Washington and Alaska,now it’s not necessary to cross the Canadian border to travel between both states! Let’s do the same thing for this other location!

How did Point Roberts become an American enclave anyway, it's such an inconvenience to live there. If the US doesn't cede it to Canada, wouldn't turning it into a military base or a prison make more sense? Or maybe some rich American will decide to buy all private property in Point Roberts and make it a micro-nation.

4:40 The US did cede land north of the 49th parallel in the treaty. So the US was in the business of ceding territory. I suspect it had more to do with the British not giving a freak about that little piece of land, then the US not being willing to cede it.
@ItsThatSheep
@ItsThatSheep 6 лет назад
I know this comment is like a year old, but I believe ceding land is actually way more complicated and tiresome than people think. Especially now with education, gas, electric , services and housing all have to change, not to mention people's citizenship. People deliberately chose to live there and live that lifestyle after the agreement, so it's not like anyone is loosing out.

Point Roberts and Angle Inlet are one thing. Saint Pierre and Miquelon belonging to France is even crazier. Its just off the coast of Newfoundland. Why is it still apart of France?
@BayviewFinch
@BayviewFinch 8 лет назад
+diablomix No. I still think Point Roberts is crazier. It just doesn't make sense. The 49th parallel thing should've stopped at Boundary Bay, where Blaine is. If you're going all the way to Point Roberts, then why not just across Vancouver Island too? Why is Pt. Roberts included? St. Pierre and Miquelon are at least whole islands. Look at all of the islands in the Caribbean that belong to various European countries, or all of the small islands in any ocean. Guam is part of the U.S.A. It's a small island in the Pacific. The closest sizable country is the Philippines.

If according to treaty, Victoria BC should belong to USA, what happened??
@ZhangtheGreat
@ZhangtheGreat 5 лет назад
There were three main provisions of the treaty: (a) The 49th parallel would extend to the Pacific Ocean (b) Vancouver Island would belong to Canada (as it was spotted before the border was drawn, so they resolved this in order to not divide the island and complicate matters) (c) The British would be granted the right to use the mouth of the Columbia River (now the border between Oregon and Washington)

Simple solution; allow all Canadian/USA border city residents apply for security clearance pass to cross without having to stop. This would save tons of time and Billions of dollars to reduce border agents needed.. The money wasted to bus these children 2 hours every day is ridiculous and could be spent on paying for them to go to a school in Canada. Also if you allowed commerce to cross freely, many more people and businesses would move to Point Roberts and they would eventually be able to open their own school, possibly a small community college

Why are we paying to staff a border checkpoint for a city of 1300 people? Just give this place to Canada already. Throw in the Angle Inlet too. Or trade them for a couple of islands in the San Juans or Lake Huron.
@ISpitHotFiyaa
@ISpitHotFiyaa 8 лет назад
We could pick up a couple islands somewhere. And I'm not saying revoke these folks' citizenship. They could have dual citizenship or they could move. It just doesn't make sense to have a staffed border crossing here. Maybe we just get rid of it and let people enter at will. But then it becomes sort of a no man's land for all sorts of Vancouver criminals to escape to.

Should just treat the border here like the US/Canada border was before 9/11. You could go back and forth and at the very most you may get asked for your drivers license if CBP thought you looked sketchy. If they knew you, usually a quick wave and that was it. Same thing down east at Standstead, Quebec/Derby Vermont. Town is cut in half by the border. CBP used to be locals who knew who did and didn't belong, but then some bureaucracy in DC decided they should put people who didn't know the area at all, and they treat everyone like total dickheads.

It would be so much nicer if it was part of Canada. America doesn't need this space which is evidenced by the fact that it's so undeveloped. The Lower Mainland (Canada) actually needs the room as it's already cramped by the mountains to the north, the rest of the U.S. border to the south and the ocean to the west. Canada needs all the habitable land it can get. Most of the country is already uninhabitable. So bloody sad. And I'm sorry but any American who chooses to live there is some sort of weirdo anyways, I mean there's no other way to look at it
