Excellent video and content, I paint 6-8 trucks a year…I flow coat all restoration work, I believe it’s the key to absolute perfect finish. Keep the videos coming, this old dog still learns from your style of delivery.

I only have 2 quarts of the shopline base already mixed so I could use it to trim out the backside of panels and switch to something else on the exterior in order to use the better clear. I was a production painter over 30 years ago. Just doing this truck for fun. So I am out of date on the current products. Thank you for any help you can give.

Sounds like a good plan. I use faster clear on the jambs a lot of times then a slow clear on the outside.

Looks awesome!! I know your prep work is #1, does that contribute as well or just in the method of spraying the clear as I noticed no orange peel, is that because of the amount of clear coat in your coats?
@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 3 года назад
Yes. This second application of clear was all about getting it flat as possible with little or no peel. It had a good paint job on it already that was sanded flat as possible taking out any previous orange peel then I tried to apply the two coats of clear as wet and flat as possible without running. A quality clear with the right gun set up and some experience using both. It takes using the same clear repetitively to know how far you can push it. Thank you and thanks for watching!

looking good, When you were running the flash light around checking parts, where the paint booth lights off?

Yes they were off. It was actually quite dark in there but the camera picks up a lot of light. The light is a SATA true sun led light. Really bright.

The areas that you cut through on... Do you ever have issues with lifting or fry up once you apply another coat of base/color? How do you keep that from happening?
@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 3 года назад
I have had it lift in the past. The previous paint had set for a couple weeks which helps and when I apply the new coat on top I just mist on enough to cover without getting it too wet. Trying to go back on a fresh paint job too soon and too wet will cause problems. Some solvent paint lines have a hardener you can add to the basecoat that also helps with this. For example with the DBC basecoat I’m using there is DX57 hardener that can be added that helps tame down the aggressive solvent a bit. It also depends on your clear coat. Some lift easier than others.

Absolutely love your videos. Very helpful for me! I’m about to paint my 77 Chevy short bed after 3 years of a frame off with NOS parts. Using PPG products. Media blasted, DP epoxy and then JP 202. Will use DP as a sealer. Local distributor mixed ShopLine for the base coat. Will any clear work on that base coat? I have spared no expense on this truck so I want the best clear. What do you recommend? Thanks again for the videos. I have picked up so many things from you!
@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 2 года назад
If you plan on painting the entire truck at once or at least in large sections, shopline JC6700 is a great clear. It’s slow drying but that helps it lay out. If it’s going to be buffed apply a 3rd coat after plenty of flash time. Thanks for watching!
@loriethornton12
@loriethornton12 2 года назад
@@StoutCustom Yes it will be three or four fairly large sections at a time. Do you suggest 2 gallons total of base coat mixed in a 5 gallon can like you did, so I'll have plenty and it will match? For then entire truck inside and out. Not underside though.
@loriethornton12
@loriethornton12 2 года назад
I see the JB or JBP base coats both have a 1 to 1 ratio. So 2 gallons would make 4 sprayable? Is that too much? Thanks so much!!
@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 2 года назад
@@loriethornton12 two gallons has turned out to be plenty on this truck. I’m not sure I’d mix it in a 5 gallon can again though. Hard to handle. I’d probably do two gallon cans with 3 quarts in each

Alright. I figured you’re the one to ask here. I cleared my k10 cab yesterday and have a large light spot butting up to the windshield. Would you just scuff with grey scotch brite and put a couple coats on it then wet sand/buff? Thank you sir!
@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 3 года назад
Base/clear or single stage? And by light spot do you mean not covered/transparent?
@joshuakeith8710
@joshuakeith8710 3 года назад
@@StoutCustom Looks not covered. It is a base/clear. Color is white.
@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 3 года назад
@@joshuakeith8710 I would sand the whole panel with 600 being careful not to go through then scuff the edges with grey, a couple more coats of base then two coats of clear again.

@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 3 года назад
This one is getting VC5700. 2021 is a great clear as well. I use to spray a lot of it.
@loriethornton12
@loriethornton12 2 года назад
One more question I promise! Cost no issue, which base coat and clear PPG do you use for the best result possible?
@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 2 года назад
Envirobase is awesome but really structured for collision shops that are set up for it. DBC is a great solvent product that is a real workhorse with a great color range. Shopline JBP works great but has some color limitations. Shopline JB works but you have to be selective on your colors because of coverage. As long as I can get the color I want, I’m good with JBP. They have several great clearcoats available. DC2021, D8152, vC5700 all great clearcoats.
@loriethornton12
@loriethornton12 2 года назад
@@StoutCustom My PPG store could only mix my color, light blue solid, in JB ShopLine as no formulas are offered in the DBC or other lines. Since it’s a solid color I’m hoping it will be ok. May take 3 coats to get good coverage. So I got two gallons of that and will use DC 2021 clear. They assured me it will work fine. Hopefully, it works out ok! I’m nervous, with three years of work on the line! PPG color library says I can add 5% of the clear coat hardener in the base. Not sure about that. I can’t thank you enough for the videos and your help!
@StoutCustom
@StoutCustom 2 года назад
@@loriethornton12 hey no problem. Glad to help. You said you were sealing it so if it’s one solid color, light grey, before you start the base you will be fine. The hardener in the basecoat gives the base a little more durability against rock chips n such. It’s a good thing.
