In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view from Zugspitze (Zugspitzplatt) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen along the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway in 4K/60 frames per second.
The Bavarian Zugspitze Railway (German: Bayerische Zugspitzbahn) is one of four rack railways still working in Germany. The metre gauge line runs from Garmisch in the centre of Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Zugspitzplatt, approximately 300 metres below Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. The line culminates at 2,650 metres above sea level, which makes it the highest railway in Germany and the third highest in Europe. It is also the railway in Europe with the biggest height difference: 1,945 metres, the lower half being open-air and the upper half being underground. The line is operated by the Bayerischen Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG (BZB), whose majority owner is the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Municipal Works.
The Cogwheel train is in operation for almost 100 years. Since 1930, locals and tourists alike have been able to reach the Zugspitze plateau and the famous golden summit cross in comfort.
It took 2 years of construction time for a Cogwheel train Zugspitzbahn. The cost of the project was 22 million Reichsmark. The train operates as a friction railway from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and from Grainau, as a cogwheel train.
Elevation gain between the valley and top station: 1,010 metres
The line has a total of 19 km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Zugspitze plateau. During the construction of the cogwheel train, it was necessary to create a 4,453-metre-long underground route. The workers had to dig through the mountain massif between Riffelriss and Schneefernerhaus. 80,000 m3 of rock material was transported to the outside via shaking chutes.
Up to 2,500 workers were employed on the large construction site, sometimes under the most adverse alpine conditions.

I would like to thank the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG for all the support and help to film this mythical German Railway journey that makes Germany’s highest mountain accessible to everyone.

Now that I'm driving down again, and you're driving like this -- _(at __11:20__)_ -- through the approx. 4.7 km long tunnel, and I'm just picturing myself walking the 4.7 km long route through the tunnel, all alone, without light, and suddenly I hear steps behind me coming towards me, possibly eerie figures and ghosts and it's all the darkest night around me. Oooooh how scary I would feel. I think I'd die of fear😱 -- Luckily it's my own footsteps echoing in the tunnel. -- I think it would be an oppressive feeling to walk this route without lights.🤔 14:20

Now we're at the Eibsee middle station 38:51 Just a quick question: I can imagine that the current is fed back into the overhead lines when driving downhill. Is that so?
@RailRelaxation
@RailRelaxation 11 месяцев назад
@norbertk.1473 Sorry, would not know that. Maybe someone with more technical knowledge can answer your question.

@@RailRelaxation It is often the case that the *"motor brake"* is also used on the railway. This is the case when the electric motor is switched over as a generator to generate electricity, since the electric motor then also generates electricity itself through *"feedback of the electromagnetic currents"*. The motor slows down the mechanical kinetic energy, since mechanical power is required to generate electricity. This is exactly the opposite principle with an electric motor, which is normally intended for propulsion. The engine brake is therefore an aid for protecting the mechanical brakes, since otherwise the mechanical brakes would wear out too quickly. The bottom line is that an electric locomotive has two braking devices: mechanical and electric. With the electric brake, electricity is thus fed back into the overhead line.
