What you say is correct. Ministers have been placed in positions with no knowledge of what their position entails. How can you have a minister of electricity who has no training or certificate to prove he or she understands what needs to be done. We have had a cabinet of ministers who have no inkling of what their position requires of them, hence the terrible results we see today. Your points are well explained. Unless Parliament is populated by totally honest men and virtuous women, then the words in the Constitution could mean very little in practice. This is why one of the first things the DA wanted was that its Cabinet Ministers were also parliamentarians.

True Jamie, technical expertise is key, ( distinguish between less educated/ semi- literate and educated in a different faculty). When u look at it from this perspective, it is possible to lead without the technical expertise. To lead effectively when you are not an expert in the TYPE OF WORK being done requires a combination of humility, strong communication skills, problem-solving ability, and the ability to build and empower a strong team. More importantly , surround yourself with people with the tech skill. You find Engineers leading Financial services institutions.
Engineering students do well in finance because the maths they do is very complex and transferable and because of the problem solving methodologies they learn in university. I think other professions would not easily be able to make the same transitions.
Interesting video. J agree 100% with the idea of educated/skilled leaders. I think in Zambia & Rwanda they specify a minimum level of education. In SA I would place a bachelor's degree (or equivalet) as a minimum level of qualification required for cabinet & MPs.

KZN province didn't do well for the ANC in these past elections but the president was very inclusive in this GNU with 40% to the ANC side, mchunu, njabulo, Sihle, Mdu and others because people there voted for MK party project but though the numbers were down for the ANC in KZN, he gave them an opportunity to express themselves in the ministerial positions

As far as qualifications go, I agree that the ministers should posses qualifications that are applicable to the ministry that they are to run. This is unfortunately not the case across the board… steenhuizen and agriculture? Angie and defence? Mantashe? In the current cabinet… time to regulate ability to be considered for cabinet to appropriately qualified people.

However, I tend to disagree with you when it comes to the choice of politicians in positions of power, not that I advocate the status quo, but hey, it is what it is. Let's take the very John Steenhuisen you've been hammering about. Look, I hold no fort for him, neither am I a DA voter/follower. In my humble opinion, John has been in the game of politics for over a decade, and every time he is elected, mind you ELECTED, by among whom are people of stature, medical doctors, lawyers, engineers, professionals of varied industries in general. In short, the very educated ones. So, there must be something that they see in him, other than academic qualifications. Sure, he may come short in some areas of his leadership, but in essence this will be offset by the advisory panel he will be working with, together with his personal one/s, I guess he's allowed that. I've learnt and observed from the very Gedleyihlekisa, that in politics the best weapon is the ability to permeate through the masses on the ground, THAT CHARM!! Most educated people are aloof when in positions of power and tend to drift away from the very constituents that elevated them in the first place, you may disagree on this point, but it's playing out even as we speak. ANC's fall from grace, while JZ's numbers are talking a different language, despite the learned few that have turned their backs on him because of what they gather from their readings as well as social media and not what they are fed. I would really like to erase from everyone the notion that cabinet ministers 'need' to have technical skills related to their posts. Cabinet ministers are required to bring wisdom, stability, direction and vision to a department. The department already employs 100s of technical people to perform such tasks. The question is: Would it help to be highly competent in that field? Absolutely however it isnt a crucial prerequisite. On the flipside, ofcos you cannot be a complete idiot either in your sequence of logic or temperament. Thank you.

Our constitution is very goos. Problem is that the ANC having majority rule all these years did what they want. Feom now they will be held liable by other members of the GNU for their mess ups and this is why a multi party government is so important.

You don't need a PHD to enforce policy on food security by promoting interventions that support imaging farmers. You don't need a degree to ensure accountability, value for money and timely execution of development projects NO! I disagree with the qualification for ministerial positions argument. It is true that best qualified people tend be better suited for certain ministerial positions. However, if ministers must be qualified, we might as well require the formation of a political party to registered by a qualified individual since you need some education to govern. This would make it impossible for figures like former President Zuma who has no formal education yet his was able to reach political heights most qualified politicians will never. Not everone can be President of a party, leave that party and in the same year be an official opponent. The EFF is 10 years old, has a good track record and is made up of highly qualified individuals yet they could not be official opposition. Its not always about who is most qualified but who is most capable. A president must be allowed to choose his hunting dogs however they see fit to deliver the best outcomes of his plan. A great deal of loyalty and respect is necessary to execute mandates by the President.
