Hi Everyone, first of all sorry this is a second publish as the first upload was the wrong one, I had a slight re edit that should have gone up. With regards to this if you are having overheating issue please can you post your temperatures. Important Possible Update is coming to help with this issue and I have already tried it, I cant say its a night and day improvement however for some it seems to help, if you are having issues this FW has been leaked and it could be worth trying.

1. Differing effects from users - Differing weather conditions? - The goggles are black, and direct solar gain must be a factor where the weather provides such gain, certainly not an issue in the UK currently! 2. Basic schoolboy H&V - when you warm air it expands, so outlet area needs to be greater than input area for best throughflow efficiency. Looks to be the wrong way round?

After watching this video after it first came out I've done some testing of my own. Yesterday I did a 45 minute flight whilst the air temp was 6 degrees, and after landing found the right screen temp to be 60.70 degrees, whilst the left screen temp was only around 35. I didn't see any screen discolouration. Back home on the bench I've then done more testing. With the ambient temperature at 20 degrees I found the right screen reached 69.90 degrees after 1hr 20 minutes, however the screen still looked fine. What's interesting though is I found that after powercycling the goggles (without letting them cool down) the right screen rebooted with a green tint. In subsequent tests I saw the same thing. In fact after letting the right screen reach just 54 degrees, after powercycling the screen was green. So whilst I'm not seeing issues with the right screen discolouring yet during use, if hypothetically I was to change goggle battery midflight (plausable as I often do flights lasting several hours) I probably would have that problem

I have the OVERHEATING issue. Thanks Mads for the video it helped me understand it better for me to make some observations. 1) We have summer here with ambient temps 28-34 C 2) I am running Goggle HW Version = 4.0, Goggle SW Version = 36.42.2 BETA If those corner vents next to the optics are suction vents, they are not really good when you block them off with your face. Where would they draw air from? We typically seal off the optics area with our face not to get any light leak, so restricting any air suction... I suspect at least for my goggles, that under summer conditions, with elevated summer ambient temperatures, these goggle get into a thermal runaway and the current cooling solution cant keep up. I suspect most current users are Northern hemisphere based and you have cooler winter temperatures now, when summer comes along more overheating instances will get reported. It would be good to do your elevated thermal ambient test, with the face area blocked off, as if you were wearing them. It would also be good for people that are reporting problems top report the Firmware versions and Ambient temperatures. PS: Late yesterday I tried to use the AV in feature for the first time. I could not use it as the image was completely over exposed in white (I could not get to the screen controls while in AV). A quick swap of the AV cable into a standalone monitor showed the analog VTX transmission was indeed crystal clear. I don't know if it is related but I need to delve deeper in my AV in problem during the next few days. PPS: I really hope and trust Walksnail/CADDX will sort the issue out, since we desperately need proper competition to keep the big giants like DJI honest and listening to our FPV community. Competition is healthy and good for the consumer in the long run.... Thank you, Kind Regards Rudi

I'm the unlucky one who get this issue and despite your opinion I believe this is a bad thermal design. In my case I flown a simulator in hdmi-in mode for about an hour and then I start to see that the right display is getting darker (or maybe greener). And this difference in color presentation disappears only after switching the goggles off and letting them cool down for about 10-15 minutes. My natural thermal detectors in my fingers could clearly feel the difference in temperature on both sides of the goggles after about 30 minutes of work, so Ive stated before and I'll state again - every one should be able to reproduce the problem and you btw confirmed the statement. I'm not going to retest them again for the temperature because I know they are overheating and I actually don't care at what temp does this happen. Caddx were feeding me a lot of time with promises of this problem to be resolved with a new firmware but I pushed. Now they offer me a replacement when I wanted a refund. Don't know how to handle to get a refund because to me it's obviously a bad thermal design which they cant fix without redesigning internal mechanics

I just received my Goggles X and have had no issues but they do get hot and noticeably hotter on the right side. It is winter here and that certainly helps but I am worried that summer temps will bring troubles to a lot more people. Here in the California where I live 33 Celsius (91F) would be considered pleasant weather! It is not unusual for the temperatures to reach 40 C (104F) on a real scorcher. Sure most will pack it in by the time the temps reach 35C-37C but anyone who wears their Goggles X in the hot sun will exacerbate the situation. Even white plastic would help. At what point did the "green screen" after rebooting your hot goggles return to normal colors? Did it ever? While flying I hear my fans increased noise several times. Turbo mode? Is this a two speed fan? Are they both two speeds? Is one coming on that wasn't previously on? I haven't seen that mentioned. But it could be an indication that temps are close to the danger level. Thank you for this deep dive. I can buy you a coffee but CaddX needs to be involved or we are in trouble.

Great video, Ian! I was just about to make a video explaining the internal cooling design but you beat me to it. I, too, have had the "right screen issue" before the temp gets anywhere near 70deg. I dismantled my goggles completely to understand how it all works and found a few other issues as well. Long story short, I have some replacement parts coming from Caddx along with the new heatsink. I'll make a complete teardown and "my thoughts" video soon.

Thanks for your good work Ian. My goggles arrived yesterday & won't be tested for a few days yet. I watch with interest. Would some vent holes through the front face on very RHS (as worn) allow better airflow over the hot areas and out through the front fan exit port?

I believe all heat should be drafted upwards. Not forcing hot air downward through the nose area. I have a pair sitting in it's shipping box unopened deciding if I want to send back even considering the fake snow issue with increased latency using analog through HDMI. Hmmm. What is the better option other than DJI.. HDZero?
@artifixprime
@artifixprime 4 месяца назад
Wonder what would happen if the fan at the front was reversed? The idea is to get the coolest air (ambient temp) on to the board at the front straight away rather than draw air from the inside that might already be at a higher temp. Not 100% though where you would vent the exhaust - maybe out the top?

I'm curious what they are trying to accomplish with firmware fix. Cpu load, fan's pwm frequency? With how hot the vrx gets, why not have a similar heat shield underneath the board? Only the thought of better separation of the main heat source and the optics. I honestly haven't had any issues, but minimal use before winter set in.

Did you make some test with different input voltages ? I just received my goggles and I'm setting up a Pavo 25 V2 with a V2 VTX. I had HDZERO until now, WS is new stuff for me. When I work on the bench, I use a lab power supply that feeds both the target drone and the goggles, and have the drone getting fresh air from a fan. I started working at 8V/2S, setting ELRS, BF 4.5, etc. I had no particular problem. Then at some point I upped the voltage the 12.3V, just to check that WS was reporting the voltage correctly on its GUI. I let the voltage at that power for some time (30mns?) doign other things then noticed that the right side of the goggles was hot. At that point I lost the right screen (fully black). Once the goggles' temp was back to room temperature or so, I powered back the goggles and the right screen was back on.

Greetings from Florida, friend. I'm curious about your testing in the 3d printer. When you cranked the bed temp up to 70, in turn heating the cabinet up to 32C (90 degrees Fahrenheit for us Yanks), you came close to recreating a Florida summer day, minus any heat generated by direct sunlight. Would it be safe to assume that 32C, plus any heat from direct sunlight, would increase the interior temperature even farther? My guess is that those two together would drastically up the interior heat of the goggles, and perhaps led to even higher temps than what you saw in your testing?
@GhostRyderFPV

I see Caddx is offering the heatsink for free, to buyers of the Goggles X, and the new production run includes it. From their site: _"This link is only available to users who have purchased Goggles X_ _We send the hot plate quantity based on the transaction record of the customer purchasing Goggles X. (For example: you have 2 goggles X, you only need to buy _2pcs heatsink, multiple purchases will not be shipped)._ _The latest production of goggles has been replaced with heatsink, so users who have not received the goggles X don't need to purchase heatsink again. _The price is only temporary and not the actual selling price."_

Goggles definitely don't favor that side at best. Until I watched this video. I might have questioned it. But after this video. 100% it's heat causing it to mess up that display. It's always the same display. And once broken it cannot be fixed without replacing the whole display. I'm starting to think you gotta cut it up in certain areas to allow more airflow over those chips. The top plate needs to do more. And if your adding a fan anywhere it should be over the right side. I'm still waiting on mine to come in and 100% am modding it before it even turns on. Not taking that risk. I thought it could have possibly been too small of a power wire and people were pushing 6s into it. But definitely looks more like chip heating.

Mine are going back as they can't do more than 40mins before the right hand screen gets dim and yellowed. Very disappointed indeed. In my tests.... Right hand screen gets to 65C, left gets to 47C. Main board gets to 75C. Test conducted in RF standby mode indoors at 21C. Right hand side of the case is significantly hotter than the left hand side. Lots of hot air ejected through the vents. Now I have 3vtx's and no goggles 😐
@MadRC
@MadRC 4 месяца назад
65c is definitely hot but still below the max however that’s not good. How long does that take to happen ? There is a new FW coming out you should try first I may help the issue.
@threebadmicefpv
@threebadmicefpv 4 месяца назад
Takes about 40 minutes, after 60 minutes there is a small amount of image 'tearing' at top left of the right hand side module. I stopped the test at 60 mins as I didn't want to destroy anything. Also the goggles were not pressed against my face for most of the test (but I covered the prox sensor with my thumb to keep the displays active being careful not to block the node vent), so those vents inside the goggles should have had good airflow. IMHO the more the components are cooked, the shorter will be their lifespan. As I fly planes for longer than 90 minutes at a time these are not going to be suitable as I don't want to have a failure whilst my big talon is airborne. My tests were in a 21C room. I assume on a nice sunny day (yes sometimes we do have those in the UK 😂) they will fail earlier. What's interesting is that you say the oleds are rated to 90C, but I am seeing discolouration well before that temperature. Discolouration first then dimming as the temp passes about 55C. Additional observations are that if I bump up the resolution to 1080p and also then frame rate, the temperature increases slightly quicker - hth. Honestly I think that pushing a product out in this state is a sure way to get lots of returns and a loss of reputation. It's not up to the community to debug and attempt to fix problems (Just my 2p worth) these goggles + 3 vtx's and antennas and I'm up to nearly £1k of outlay. When I spend £1k I shouldn't have to go debugging and waiting around for fixes. I do understand that HD fpv goggles are a niche product that present a unique set of difficult design problems to solve, but my statement still stands. When a customer shells out a big bunch of cash and they ship with a fault that could impact the safety of a flight then they are unsuitable. They said, I'm sure they would be fine for flying my quads as they would get time to cool down between packs. But for us aircraft folks who like a longer flight then nope. I received mine just before xmas. I did notice that they went out of stock and I ordered on the second restocking at a UK based reseller. Maybe there is a difference between first & second batches. Such a shame as I had high hopes for these. Thanks very much for actually doing a video on these - great research on your part 👍 actually acknowledging that some people are seeing the issue is nice to see. I noted that the facebook discussion on the overheating issue seemed to get quite 'heated' and just because some users dont see the problem, it doesn't mean that it's not an issue 😉. Samples of 1 aren't particularly good science - something you have paid attention to 👍

Didn't fancy dropping as low as 2s though - however if they'll _reliably_ run on 6v I'm willing to try it

@@threebadmicefpv however maybe less volts, more amps, more heat

True in some cases, but In my experience linear regs usually get hotter the more they have to drop the voltage, the excess energy is dissipated as heat (well certainly in the case of regs like the old L7805 / LM317) Disclaimer... I've not taken these apart so I am only guessing theres a linear reg in there

Did you test switching inputs ? I think some reported it occurs when switching inputs

Yes however there is marginal difference, the problem is I cant show the temps in the other modes.

@Madtech I made a V2 with the cooling channel nearer the face blocked off. Maybe this will help the hot spot seen on your thermal video. I still don't have my goggles and I understand that not everyone is having issues with the heat. I've been off work and bored. haha

Except they completely refuse to recall it or refund you they will tell you to wait on a fix they have a fix coming which is honestly bullshit when you're paying this much for something and it doesn't work out of the box or having issues you should be able to send it straight back to a manufacturer and tell them fuck off and use somebody else

I'm always baffled to see manufacturers using a fan to blow / force air into a device for cooling... It's much easier and efficient to suck air through a device and use the fan as an exhaust. e.g. Install the fan so it's blowing out, and strategically put vent holes in areas that need Cooling. So air gets sucked into the vents through the device and is exhausted at the fan... But I'm no expert in thermodynamics... 😉

If your just getting into fpv there's something new coming out every five minutes goggles etc best to wait six to twelve months on most new products, watching channels like this is great for information and staying informed until stuff like this is fixed by the manufacturer or hobbyist start modifying shit.
