Bestselling author, feminist and all-round funny woman, Caitlin Moran takes us on a tour of her house and talks us through some of the feminist basics: how being a bit hairier down below could result in a massive telly, Russell Crowe, his wrinkles and some provocative posing and shoes, obviously.

***** Women can have their menopause in the thirties. This old crone looks like she dried up decades ago. There is no such thing as a 'male menopause'. Men can father children up to their 80's or older
@guydecervens

***** Wow, you are stupid. There is no such thing as 'male menopause'. Menopause is the ending of menstrual periods. Men don't have periods. It has nothing to do with potency or fertility. In Latin it means the end of monthly periods. Dumbo

+guydecervens Actually, it's you who are the Dumbo. Male menopause is well documented, and descriptions of it can be found on most medical websites. Ever hear about a fun little thing called "google"? I didn't think so.

Caitlin reminds me so much of someone I used to regularly bump into, in a nightclub on Weds evening 'student night' in Southsea in mid 90s. Someone who used to make me laugh until it hurt, who I admired, respected and adored from a distance. I wish I had told her then, and I wish I'd never let her go.

Sorry if I don't make sense - I get pretty stressed about these things but I really appreciate your comments and I like that article! I just want to defend people - everyone! - as we're all a product of our environment and should be helped to understand things we don't know and be allowed some leeway/forgiveness when we get things wrong - we all make mistakes Sorry again for rambling/sounding maybe too idealistic/clueless! - or just not making sense - I'm still working these things out :)

I agree women help perpetuate the stereotypes/expectations on ourselves, but it IS the years, centuries of patriarchy etc. that got us here. I'm not blaming anyone, I just want people to understand it's no-one's fault, we should just acknowledge the problems and that this is where they lie. We should accept our fallibility and see each other as human beings - that's where equality is found. +Sympathy/empathy is key - I think we can find power in that when they realise we're all in the same boat.

I'm glad to hear you accept that there is an obvious controversy and researched it, and I agree perhaps giving her the benefit of the doubt that she may have potentially said it in the wrong context or I could go as far as to hopefully assume she regret her choice of words or lack of understanding/knowledge on the matter of woc, and we do need to know why she said what she did. With that I agree, and I hope she comes to fully address that one day.

To hear someone talking like this is great. Refreshing, shocking, resonating, and liberating. Cailin - I work with girls as they come of age, looking at how to become a woman rather than how to be a woman. I'd love to hear you talk about that some more.

As I've read up on this controversy, one thing is clear. Nothing will be achieved by leaping in & accusing someone of offensive comments. This just puts people on the "defensive", & their replies under those circumstances are likely to be equally "controversial" / inflammatory. Most people are more than willing to explain their thoughts & words, but only when approached with respect & an open mind. The problem with a lot of postings hereis that people are flying in guns blazing.

I think she is using everyday, easy-to-find things that point towards a culture of sexism. It's expectations for how to be a woman. Same goes with men. Same goes for a lot of (for lack of a better word) genres of people. You can find yourself being categorised in many of these 'genres'. I'm glad that some people here seem to be able to disregard them for the grains of salt they are, but some people can't; some people aren't even aware of the implications of what these expectations mean to them. Yeah it's minute issues, and it need not be applied to everyone. But I think being made aware of how ridiculous these things are is great. If everyone started being true to themselves I bet the all the critical RU-vid commentators would be at a loss for who THEY are. No one to compare themselves to. Everyone would be free from expectation, and they themselves wouldn't be able to thrust their own expectations onto those who don't carry a solid, individualistic mind-frame. Where would they be without the juxtaposition? Probably just get on with life, not giving two-shits about how awesome the world would be. What she pointed out is sexism. It doesn't mean that all men are being sexist, doesn't mean that they even care, really. She makes a great point of how most men couldn't give two-hoots about what woman wear, do or say, in her book 'how to be a woman'. It's actually one of her bigger points. It doesn't get said NEARLY enough, but most mean in western culture are quite beyond being sexist. Feminism, as a word, has been tainted by a lot of people. Covered in a greasy, visceral substance. Doesn't actually change it's content, ya know. Just could do with a bit of a scrub down.

Why are female models usually posed more erotically than men? Hint: It's not about one pose being more attractively "feminine" and the other more "masculine". The main reason the mainstream media doesn't usually present the male in erotic poses is because women aren't particularly interested in purchasing highly sexualized photographs of men. Men are extremely interested in purchasing erotic photographs of women, for whatever reasons. Trends in photography are governed by the profit motive. "Playgirl", intended for a female demographic, turned out to be of interest primarily to gay men and eventually went broke.

+Pothos Dionysus So what about the other way around. Why cant we see strong woman with "a look of destiny in there eyes". Maybe you can blame males not being sold well in a erotic manner on preference my theory would more go along the line of: It's embarrassing for a woman(much more for them than for men) to buy porn and you could better see it online but after all a woman not being portrayed as successful is this about sexual preference I wouldn't think so (at least I don't get an orgasm every time my boss walks by) I think its just that we don't get interested in successful woman (which may or may not be at least a bit sexist)
@further7074
@further7074 8 лет назад
Exactly. Neither strong men nor 'strong woman with "a look of destiny in there eyes"' are very sexy. Guys buy porny pictures. Women don't. The market proves it. I seriously doubt embarrassment has much to do with it. If women aren't ashamed of posing with their naked butt cheeks pointed at a camera, I don't think buying a picture of a provocatively posed man would embarrass them too badly.

& I do try it. The majority of women try it. Incredible! We're not all insecure wrecks about our appearance! But the sad fact is on a social and professional level, women are initially judged on their appearance above all else. Yes, women are free to express themselves through their appearance but only within the boundaries of society's beauty standards set by the opposite sex. Please don't trivialize a person's desire to put effort into something the world is judging them on.

Twitter, tweets - apologies I don't know the difference. Until tonight, I'd never been near these things. I DO accept there is a "controversy" here (I've just gone & done my research). I think we have to be very careful not to rush to judgement, because even though these 5 or 6 words may well be saying something offensive, there are several different contexts in which they could have been said that could give a different slant. We need to know why she said that, rather than assuming we know.

Actually yeah, i guess women are expected to be more conscious of their appearance, due to the unfortunately large amount of men with one-track minds. I was basing it on the few women i know that sort of....reject that paradigm. But it obviously isn't easy. So i guess you're right about that. In regards spending huge amounts of money on shoes and dresses and whatnot, is that really necessary? My friend's girlfriend wears converse to absolutely everything and no one looks down on her for that.
@cordeliaistheone
@cordeliaistheone 12 лет назад
Women are expected to do this - just like the hair removal thing etc. This is what we have to do to feel empowered or actually get noticed in this society. We have to be perfect and confident and alluring or men won't care - and we're conditioned to believe that's what's important since we need men as they're the ones taken seriously. And people DO criticise the women who pose like that and it's awful because, as I said, this is just how we are EXPECTED to be, it's not the ROOT of the problem.

Hmmm, she has lots and lots - and lots - of opinions, but many of them are not actually new and I am gobsmacked how many people fawn over her every utterance. If I could spell sycophancy I'd chuck that in there too. I can spell hype though, and smug. I don't mind her having views of course, but I for one don't want to pay money for any of them, and I am astounded that others do. I am posting (I am not normally given to posting unkindly) because I am genuinely surprised that so many people (apparently) need Ms Moran to tell them how to be, live and think. Wow. The Times, it seems, cannot give us enough of her. Despite the above I genuinely wish her well but this time, I have had a go voicing my own opinion.

+Paul Revere I've read her book "How To Be A Woman" and, while I don't agree with her every point and yes, her ideas are really just reinforcing feminist basics, I very much enjoyed reading it. Her writing style is very funny and her little stories can be very relatable. I don't think people are buying her books to be "told how to be, live, and think", people are buying them because they're are entertaining and people (especially women) can connect to them.

Of course WE KNOW it's the woman's choice to do anything, but history has repeatedly shown women not being allowed to have a choice so it makes sense that we're still working things out in a lot of aspects after so long as second class citizens. It's a slow process but you can't argue that perpetuated sexism etc. here is to blame, not the oppressed women themselves. Please read Caitlin Moran's book 'How To Be A Woman' - it explains everything so well. I hope I've been clear :)

>is a feminist >doesn't like women having the right to pose however they like in magazines >has somehow decided in what way other women should pose, in accordance to her own opinion, like some kind of dictator
@asksyealer
@asksyealer 9 лет назад
You have a point but you can't deny that there's a lot of sexism involved with magazine covers. Women are often seen half-naked on covers of magazines, while men are being shown in sophisticated suits, staring into the distance. Why can't women do that? Google image "woman magazine cover", then google "man magazine cover". I'm sure you'll notice a difference. Of course a woman has a right to choose how she poses or not; but a big part of that is feeling like she needs to be sexy; like she needs to be a "real woman". And let's face it; A magazine won't sell near as many copies if a woman is showing skin, than when she isn't.
@Scias
@Scias 9 лет назад
"Women are often seen half-naked on covers of magazines" - What amount of clothes have you decided that other women wear? "while men are being shown in sophisticated suits, staring into the distance" - What have you decided that men should wear instead? "Why can't women do that?" - Are you sure they can't? Maybe try it. I'm sure you can get a woman in a suit and set up a photo shoot. If all goes well it should work. "I'm sure you'll notice a difference" - The main difference of course is that some are women and some are men. What solution do you think would work? Men in lingerie? Women in mens suits? Or force both to wear something in the middle ground, therefore oppressing creativity and consumer demand? "Of course a woman has a right to choose how she poses or not; but a big part of that is feeling like she needs to be sexy" - Do you know the inner psychology of a given individual model? If so you should seek to help any model or any person who has body consciousness issues. I don't think imposing your opinion on how much they should wear would help with that. "And let's face it; A magazine won't sell near as many copies if a woman is showing skin, than when she isn't." - Which is precisely the reason why those who sell this material do well, and those who don't, go bankrupt. By telling a magazine to publish something that the public doesn't want, you are basically aiding their demise. You are part way there with this point by the way. The next step is to figure out a decent solution. Hint: without oppressing creativity, ordering magazines to publish your particular taste in style, or oppressing any form of creative media in any way. Ever though about how this could be done?

Interestingly most women do not consider themselves ' feminist' and for good reason. They have fathers, husbands and sons and actually appreciate blokes who work hard, fix things and look after their children. Its women who buy womens mags, clothes, , shoes , 50 shades of grey etc. Many women prefer to be at home while hubby works all hours in a job he hates commutes , and pays the mortgage.

She doesn't ignore women of colour. She expressed a total lack of interest in the so called issue that one specific TV programme doesn't feature any "women of colour." She personally didn't see the relevance of that criticism of the show in relation to the interview she carried out with the show's creator. She maybe doesn't subscribe to the idea that all TV shows have to have a multiracial cast regardless of context. Ultimately, it's an argument about a TV show. Bear this in mind.

But not everyone wants to HAVE to, and it's expected of us. Men don't have to do this + that's unfair. That's the point she's making. Personally I agree. I find waxing painful + such a bother - not much point. And it's children who don't have hair down there so that's what it looks like + it's a bit creepy. I think it's sexier to be natural. You can disagree with the aesthetic side but I don't think you can with the idea that we shouldn't feel bad if we DON'T want to painfully rip out our hair.

Agree, it's the culture of victimhood that's the problem, as well as a false idea of how things were in the past. 'Patriachy' oppressed both women and men. the reason most women didn't work is because they didn't have to. Also, men do judge women by their weight, but women judge men by their height and their income. Too often the debate is one sided. we only hear how men objectify women, not that a lot of women see men as walking ATM's.

When you have proved yourself adult enough to engage in conversation, by proving that you are capable of answering points made to you (I.e - the point made many comments ago that you were making a strawman argument) then we can have a discussion. The argument she's making isn't against waxing but against the presumption that every woman MUST go through this painful and expensive procedure in order to be normal and acceptable to men. If you genuinely enjoy having a bald vulva and would do it if you were the only one in the world then fair enough, wax away. Moran is merely advocating choice and questioning the culture that says woman must radically alter their appearance so as not to disgust people. If you disagree then fair enough.
@devilseagull
@devilseagull 11 лет назад
It's more subtle than that, she's ridiculing the society that tells women they MUST do this to be acceptable. I'm sorry to hear you think feminists have no concept of sexual freedom because our movement is the reason you have it and that you have the opportunity to question it. And anyone saying anything anywhere on the internet gets hate for it, what you'd also get is responses like this one. (by the way, ending with 'so', doesn't make you any more right, it just makes you look petulant)

It's no different for men, if they wanted to attract the other sex they would put more effort into their appearance, as it happens though, men (most of them anyway) have other priorities that come before that.

The title of a book can cause immense dysphoria !!!!!!! Its 5 WORDS on a printed card cover.! To grant it that level of power is akin to some medieval notion of witchcraft!

Have you actually read this book, or are you just taking offence at a brief "condensed" comment here? At no point in the book is she arguing that women who wax are "less a woman" (feminism IS about CHOICE) - just pointing out some things (in a HUMOUROUS way) worthy of consideration. At no point in the book is she resorting to horrible, negative personal attacks. I don't remember her saying "Samantha Alaska - FUCK YOU". Its not HER that's giving feminism a "bad name". What's your problem?

If you're not familiar with the term, go & look up the word "strawman" (as in "strawman argument"). That is what you are doing here, & intelligent people like myself don't respond to strawman arguments. (Cue reply of "Why is it a strawman argument?" followed by me NOT responding) Just watch ......

I agree with many of the points but I don't think feminism needs to fight the patriarchy regarding high heel shoes. Men really do not notice or care about women's shoes. Also women's magazines can be some of the most objectifying literature on the market.

I agree! i shave my armpits daily on a personal preference for hygiene. I do also shave my legs when I feel like it, again for me.

No, once again she is arguing for choice. If you want to make children your whole life then that's fine for you but it's important to consider that not so long ago you wouldn't have had a choice, that would have been the life proscribed for you. I know I've made this argument to you before, do what you like and make your choices, that's what feminism means, but we are complacent and wrong if we forget that our grandmothers were never asked.

Your girlfriend is lucky that she hasn't experienced pressure like this but it's a FACT that it IS out there, all around us in media, everyday life. I'm not saying ALL men treat women badly and ALL women put up with it. I don't understand how I could be offending anybody since I'm just relaying truths that can be seen throughout history. Maybe I'm just not explaining myself well. Do you not see what I mean at ALL? Don't want to sound patronising but I want to understand what you're thinking.

She didn't say she didn't care, she said she 'didn't give a shit'. If you see some of her other tweets and musings you can see how she really feels on the whole subject. It's like she only cares about 'white feminism' ..but feminism involves all women, not just putting focus on women that are white or privileged and western. For example using stupid excuses like asking ..how can female artists represent woc because there's too many of them... it's just stupid.

But no has said that all women should wax, just keep shit under control down there, just like women demand of men. Besides women are free to put as little effort into their appearance as they like, but if men do not appreciate that, it's not sexism.

it sucks that feminism exists. well, not that it exists, but it sucks that it NEEDS to exist. as in, it sucks that woman were so looked down upon that there has to be a whole movement. why cant we all just be equal? oh wait, dystopia. that's why T-T

No. No. NO. Body hair does not define you as a woman. Doing something to your because of the sexist pressures of society is not right. But doing something to your body because it is what you are comfortable with is PERFECTLY FINE. Don't guilt woman for shaving/waxing their vaginas if that's what THEY WANT TO DO.
