Look back at a grand era that featured three class one independent roads with first and second generation power. This big time mountain style of railroading will never be seen again-but this feature brings it back for your enjoyment.
Don't miss the years of the UP, Santa Fe and Southern Pacific, as they all
developed the need for more locomotive power to combat the longer trains,
faster schedules and heavy grades. See "E-Units" and "Centennials" when
they were working in real freight and passenger service. Big Tunnel Motors and EMD SD-40 and SD-45s smoking it up on Tank Trains and giant manifests! This 1 HR and 38 Minute film has generous helpings of clean views of older freight cars and vintage trailers, after the power goes by and is a goldmine for railfans and modelers who want to see "how it was". Many trains also have multiple manned helpers and cabooses, in an era with no graffiti. Learn the story of Union Pacific's monumental quest for bigger diesels and more power! DD-40X Centennials, DD-35B's and Turbines all show up putting on a show! These are all time views of 2 monumental landmarks of western railroading at many locations, in all seasons! These are all epic railroading Visions, you can no longer see today!

Spent a lot of time in Cajon. Lucky to be there. I've walked through both tunnels. Also walked through #9 and 10.

The hog cars on the UP originated out of Columbus, NE and were always put on the head end to minimize injury to the hogs. They were watered at North Platte, NE by the Union Pacific Fruit Express crews. Before crossing the desert in Nevada, the cars went through a "car wash" in train to cool down the hogs to minimize stress and weight loss before arriving in East Los Angeles. We nicknamed them "The California Ladies". The UP was the last North American railroad to haul livestock. About 300 hogs were packed into each car. The train was scheduled at 70MPH maximum authorized speed, and averaged third day arrival from eastern Nebraska to Los Angeles. By the way you could hear them squealing upon arrival into the yard and smell them. Upon arrival the cars stayed intact during hump yard classification (for the hog cars were on the head end of hot shot freight). I was assigned in my early years on the west hump yard engine job. Shoving those cars at 2.5 MPH for up to an hour was sure a challenge in any kind of weather including the winter (even with the cab windows shut! The smell never went away!

I used to. CSX Tilford Yard. Listened to beating and banging like it was music. One day my house shook real hard and there was a loud rumble. Ten boxcars at the Norfolk Southern yard on the other side derailed after a rail broke.

17:34 UP gained direct access to Chicago in 1982 with the Missouri Pacific merger, via MP's Chicago & Eastern Illinois subsidiary, albeit via Kansas City and St Louis. Certainly less direct than the C&NW connection at Fremont, NE, or Council Bluffs, but a line into Chicago nevertheless. And UP made good use of it too.

Very nice, great memories. Cabooses, jointed rail, no graffiti, SP, the variety of locomotives. I even liked seeing all the fallen road names on boxcars. There was only one stack train, toward the end, on Cajon Pass I think. The shot of the Desert Wind showed Superliner cars. I don't think Superliner cars appeared until 1980. Just one question: is the audio actually from the film or added later?

The narrator misidentified the UP 6901 as 9601. The Centennial units were designated as the 6900's. They were a great unit despite riding a bit "stiff". Myself and colleages ran them up to their end. I qualified from student to engineer on the 6945 in 1980.
