Welcome back! Hope you are all doing well, today we talk about the Cal-Neva that originally opened up back in 1926. During the days of prohibition and early celebrities. Then would venture into getting owned by Frank Sinatra, this time it was at it's peak and would later get sold to others like Kirk Kerkorian. It was a major piece of Lake Tahoe and Nevada history and will hopefully be back soon with new owner Larry Ellison renovating the building.

My Dad worked here in the late 70s and 80s. Gene Wilder and Neil Young used to frequent the Cal Neva as well. I really hope that Larry Ellison does something amazing with this place and restores it without destroying the history of the Cal Neva.

They already did by destroying the cool pool, all the remaining cabins, the Indian Room and the Circle Bar.

The Cal-Neva property is at the north shore of Lake Tahoe, not "in Lake Tahoe" where your beginning map depicts South Lake Tahoe. It was just down the street from the Bal Tabarin which was last operated in the summer of 1960. I ran the slots. Indeed, those were the Golden Years!

I use to go here in the seventies all the time. It was an amazing place. Just turning 21 and the friends I was running with made this place.

Thanks! I hope it makes a comeback. My wife and I spent many getaways there between the mid 90s until its latest closure. It was a great place to visit.

Interesting video. I first heard of Cal-Neva in the HBO movie, The Rat Pack, with Ray Liotta as Frank Sinatra and Joe Mantegna as Dean Martin. Dino visits Frank to inform him that his pal, President John F. Kennedy, had just appointed brother Bobby to be the new Attorney General. Martin: "It's good to know that a choir boy with a passion for sin will be looking out for us.." Moments later, Dino tells Frank: "I want to sell you my share of Cal-Neva." The thing was, mob boss Sam "Momo" Giancana, also had an interest in the resort. In anticipation of Bobby prosecuting organized crime figures, Dino wanted to distance himself from the Rat Pack's mob contacts. Scene ends with Frank's secretary poking her head in: "The President is on line two."

I’m so glad I was able to tour the underground tunnels before it closed and they were filled in forever. I use to do security at the Cal-Neva.

@@LegendaryForces unfortunately of years of neglect, before it closed it was in rough shape. Since the tower sits on a mountain side the building started sag on one end from the fault shifting over the past 60 years. So some of the rooms had cracks they tried to cover up with wall paper that led directly outside. Back in the day AC was none existent in Tahoe because temperatures never exceeded 80 degrees at the peak of summer so there was no AC. The Frank Senatra’s ballroom was in very rough shape from years and years of smoke build up residue. I wish they would of just restored the building instead of going into financial hardship trying to make it a schwanky high end resort that’ll probably never open now. The owner is a bigot for that. The pool that went from California to Nevada that had picks of marylin swimming in it was filled in as well. Nevada is no stranger for California corporations to come in and demolish the history of Nevada for profits.

I went there two days after Christmas in 1977. It was about 20 degrees F, and there were no other tourists. At that time, there were no plexiglass windows and I was able, with encouragement from the two ladies in charge, climbed up the steps to the Coppola.

Oscar, thanks so much for this video. I read an article about divers taking a lot of junk out of the lake, and the article mentioned the Cal-Neva and Sinatra. I have no complaints about the way you situated the lodge at the lake - north or south. It's a very minor point, but the good thing about it is there wouldn't be nearly as many comments here without it. Put some sort of error in your next video!!

Sadly, the "remodelers" have destroyed the swimming pool spanning the state line that Marilyn Monroe swam in. They also tore down the cabins with the secret tunnels used by Marilyn and Sinatra to move from the casino to the cabins in the name of safety. The secret tunnel was through the floor of the closet in Marilyn's cabin. They wrecked it. As a kid, I visited in 1962 and again in about 2010. It was mostly intact then and absolutely fascinating. I guess they are going to turn it into another chichi Hollywood hotel without any history.

Another excellent video. Thanks for putting these together. Just one observation about this one... the map you pan over in the beginning implies that the Cal-Neva was in SOUTH Lake Tahoe, when in fact it's in North Lake Tahoe.

Bad Times @ the El Royale starring Jeff Bridges is a great movie that uses the Cal-Neva as the focal point of the movie though no one but history buffs like ourselves would know that and think the movie is strictly based on a writers fantasy when in fact he/she must have had some connection or knowledge of the real Cal-Neva. Loved the movie because of the Cal-Neva mystic and the acting by all was above par.

Can someone please tell me why at 0:12 it shows the Cal-Neva Lodge to be located in the south part of Lake Tahoe? Then at 7:23 a large yellow chip shows it to be (at the correct location) in the north part of Lake Tahoe.

there is a town called "Stateline" that is shown on that map - but the narrator uses the word more loosely - and you can see the video scrolling up towards the calneva on the northern shore state line

LOL.. obviously there was really no need for it other than that being the casino/hotel was so close together...
