I had the pleasure of visiting Calamity Jane's grave this summer. Her and Bill have tons of visitors and photos taken each day. I tried to go during the week thinking there would be less people. Thanks for another great video. I love the extras you put in them!

There are claims that the moniker "Calamity" may refer to something else entirely. Apparently, a raging case of VD was often referred to as having calamity. Considering that there are 3 other Calamity Jane's you mentioned, maybe this explains one or more of them...

She definitely wasn't picky in the sex partners she chose, and VD was her constant companion. Still, she wasn't alone in that department, as it was a very common std in all walks of life. As for the tall tales, it's my view that anyone trying to make a name for themselves in a frontier environment, had to embellish somewhat to create and maintain the persona. As you said she was a hard worker and earned her keep and in my book deserves much respect for putting herself at risk as she did during that epidemic. She practically did all of the initial leg work to get the hospital up and running. How she didn't die is amazing.

@@TomasAWalker53 Yeah, she was known as a "camp follower" which equates to a civilian helper. Folks like Jane who were skilled in a field could really assist the military. She did!

I have always loved the Doris Day musical western, "Calamity Jane" which was loosely based on the life of this famous frontierswoman. I think Day's beautiful song, "Secret Love" which she sings in the 1953 movie and became a smash hit for her should be credited to Martha Jane. Thanks for another great video, Santee! Great Episode Santee, Jo-Ann and I have been to Wild Bill and Calamity Jane's grave site. We've also been to Fort Laramie in Wyoming. If you've never been to Fort Laramie you may want to put it on your bucket list. Fort Laramie is an AWESOME museum. But be prepared to spend all day there, it's huge and there's lots to see. Not far from Fort Laramie is Guernsey, WY . You can visit the old Wagon Train Ruts and Register Cliff there, and Guernsey State Park is beautiful too! JT

Another excellent video, Santee! I've read a fair amount about Calamity Jane, but I've never read how she came to be called Burke. She must have married, but I've not read when or to whom. She was very well portrayed by Robin Weigert in Deadwood, one of the great TV shows of all time.

Deadwood and Hell on Wheels are two of my favorite shows. So much so i own both on DVD completely including the movie. I still think Deadwood was a little better just due to its mostly accurate period dressings. The use of cap and ball pistols for a good amount of the show, the Henry repeater being fairly rare and the only person i remember owning one being the mine boss in the pilot. Even just weighing gold out and using it for money instead of coins or bills. While i have found Hell on Wheels great, little things just drive me nuts. The biggest one is the use of centerfire cartridges less than 4 years after the civil war. I get it, you need blanks for the rifles. Seriously though, if you show a closeup of a reload at least have the prop guys whip up some period appropriate snap caps in rimfire

I have seen a few documentaries about her. Her real life was almost as crazy as her fictional exploits. She's a bit of the 'When Legend becomes fact, print the Legend.'

she spent a LOT of time in/around Livingston Mt. (WAY before Jimmy Buffet) there are TONS of old tales about her in the area (some from the 1930s LOL)

Funny. I read a few about her being so drunk she took all her clothes off and paraded up and down the street.
